CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Louis (Dan Aykroyd) is let out of jail, but his girlfriend is disgusted by his shabby appearance and his hooker admirer (Jamie Lee Curtis).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The "nature-nurture" theory that motivated so many Three Stooges comedies is the basis of John Landis's hit comedy. The fabulously wealthy but morally bankrupt Duke brothers (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) make a one-dollar bet over heredity vs. environment. Curious as to what might happen if different lifestyles were reversed, they arrange for impoverished street hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) to be placed in the lap of luxury and trained for a cushy career in commodities brokerage. Simultaneously, they set about to reduce aristocratic yuppie Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd to poverty and disgrace, hiring a prostitute (Jamie Lee Curtis) to hasten his downfall. When Billy Ray figures out that the brothers intend to dump him back on the streets once their experiment is complete, he seeks out Winthorpe, and together the pauper-turned-prince and prince-turned-pauper plot an uproarious revenge. With the good-hearted prostitute and Winthorpe's faithful butler (Denholm Elliott) as their accomplices, they set about to hit the brothers where it really hurts: in the pocketbook.

And to think the studio did NOT want Dan Aykroyd or Jamie Lee Curtis for their roles..John Landis had to fight to get them. The studio figured Aykroyd wasn't anything without John Belushi and Curtis was just a 'scream queen.' But Landis knew they could both act and he persisted. This movie has perfect casting for every part.

I don't think he was trying to "lessen" the crime. Louis is a trader with an analytical mind and an eye for detail. A nerd in fact. He was correcting her on the details of the charge sheet. PCP not heroin. BTW do people still use 🤔 phencyclidine ?

The woman who played Penelope in this movie did a killer job. This was a dopey comedy but her role was purely dramatic, she was one of the few characters in the movie who was not a comedian or part-time comedian and didn't revert to schtick at some point. Outstanding job on her part.

@@daughterofolaf, yes, lol. I agree with Owen that she did an outstanding job, but this movie is exaggerating how rich yuppie uppity types act and talk for comic effect with Penelope. Her character is so rich and spoiled that she told Louis in that earlier scene that they should change the dates of the NY stock exchange for her mother's party. That is definitely a comedically bratty spoiled character to me.

That was Winthorp's mistake, correcting what drug it was, doing that made him look more guilty even though he denied using it after him correcting it. He did the same thing at the bank when they froze his account.

@@tubucoco, it's not that very spoiled rich people are too stupid to know that they won't change the NY stock exchange around someone's party, it's more that they feel so entitled and important that absolutely everybody should bend for them. The scene with Penelope asking to switch Stock exchange times with her mother's party is an exaggeration of how they really are of course, just for comic effect because it's a movie. Another example of this is in movie "Back to school" where Rodney Dangerfield's rich character enrolls in college, his college son looks at his schedule and tells him his first class is at 11, then Rodney replies "I have a massage at 11, tell them to make it 2 o'clock"

It must've been tough enough for Louis to have been falsely arrested for stealing and to have had PCP planted on him, but then finding out from Penelope that the Dukes fired him and that she refuses to believe that he's innocent. And then Curtis suddenly hurting everything further.

She also gave a hint of having eyes on Todd in the earlier scene of Winthorp and her in the dining room after dinner when he says he can't make it to her mother's party, and she says "I'll just have to ask Todd to take me", then Louis responding "now wait a minute, if you're really going to go with that playboy!". Penelope's finding out and telling Winthorp outside the police station that the Dukes fired him and are pressing charges for stealing and drugs, she moved from subtle comments about Todd to hooking up with him and dropping Winthorp in a second

I agree. They never even showed Penelope's reaction to finding out that Louis was framed by the Dukes and innocent all along. The very last scene she's in is the country club scene where she tells Louis "no one wants to buy your drugs here".

I am the son of Todd and Penelope and the Dukes are my great granduncles and I will have revenge upon winthorpe and Valentine! I have located the carribean island that they and their families and friends live on I have hired the same hit squad that Sosa sent to wipe out Tony Montana and at this moment they are en route to the island! My granduncles are long gone but thanks to that African prince they spent their final years in comfort and now they are in heaven looking down and getting the last laugh!

What were Penelope and Todd's reactions to finding out that Louis was framed by the Dukes and innocent all along? Did Penelope feel bad for doubting Louis's innocence? Was she now falling for Todd so much that she still didn't care about trying to go back to Louis in spite of learning the truth on what really happened to him and feeling bad for doubting him, if she did?

The way they look at it though, I think, is that the rich people doing all those drugs know how to not get caught. Once they're caught and disgraced like Winthorp was, then they're no longer accepted by the other rich people. I think. Things were probably different back in the early 80s. Now, so many rich people do crazy things that they wouldn't suddenly become rejected by all their friends and family the way Winthorp was if caught.

Depends on your type. Ophelia was street smart with a tough exterior, but was also smart and kind. However in real life she probably would never truly trust a man and has some trauma in her background that would cause issues Penelope was a sheltered spoiled society girl but had all the right connections.
