When i was 6 i was a professional well known Adowa dancer, going to perform at funerals and parties and stuff. My dad put a stop to it. You know how african fathers are, they dont want any type of exposure for their daughters. Now am 33yrs old and dont think i can dance as good as i use to before.Someday when i have a child, i'll make sure they take the lessons.
Kay AK look out for a cd called the SOUL WASHERS DISCS. THEY TELL OF ASHANTI FULL HISTORY AND ALSO TEACHERS U ASHANTI SECRETS WHICH U CAN. IMMEDIATELY START USING. I HAVE NOTICED ITS NOT VERY POPULAR ON THE MARKET FOR WHAT EVER REASON SO WILL TRY MAKE IT AVAILABLE SOME HOW. ITS AMAZING IT SAYS ADOWA IS GODS DANCE WHY? COS IT MEANS WOR DOR WAA WHEN U ARE LOVED U ARE GIVEN MUCH BLESSING FROM THE SKIES AND U CATCH THEM AS THE DROP. ITS TRUE LOOK AT THEM... YER DOR WAA ADOWAA ADOWA BLESSED WE ARE X X X
This is not Adowa, it is actually Kete, notice the special drums they play with the red and black cloth. The atumpan drums are used for Adowa, they are the two drums leaning on the white stand, which are not played in Kete.
Great but now it's time to built some Ashanti temples it's time to built some beautiful castles with africain paradigm this is the only way to regenerate and give power to our people
Thank you so much for posting this video. When I was in high school I took some Ashanti dance classes. It didnt go to well for me BUT I appreciated the experience
That's Kete dancing. I learned it at the Sankofa Festival in South Philly when the new Queen Mothers were enstooled by Nana Yaa Asantewaa II. I love it!
Sorry.. My point we didn't know much about DJEMBE. in the 60's You are right this has NOTHING to do with DJEMBE its traditional drum from GHANA. This drumming was MY foundation is all I was saying. I LOVE IT!

So what is the meaning behind the dance is it meant for high court or for the people? It seems to be a courtship between lovers but the precision and dexterity looks like it is a dance used to appease the court.
That was not easy. Specific moves of hands and body. A little SouthPacific island dance moves...some Cuban rumba...a bit of Indonesian:Indian, hand gestures This is a specialized dance form that takes study. thanks!
