Traditional Automobile Profile Design Using Chalkboard Coachbuilding

In this video I share a time lapse of a traditional technique used for laying out automobile profile design (can also be used for marine and aviation...). I picked up a pair of large chalkboards from a local tech college auction and this is my first time giving them a try. First I transfer the Porsche powered mid engine chassis design shown in the picture foreground to the chalkboard using chalk. I then use pinstriping tape to play with design ideas. This can be done on anything from large cardboard to marker whiteboards and the like.

Your drawing reminds me of the NYC Museum of Modern Art display of 1949+ Ferrari mechanical 1 to 1 drawings. Great stuff, your gifted. Please, more vids of your new work. New Hampshire. 👍👍🇺🇲

I would switch the lights to the outside fenders and lean the grill forward with some tall teeth.

Chris - if you are thinking about videos that might drive interest with your viewers: consider one focused on building the aluminum tube buck from the wood. You have a brilliant video on the wood buck - and same with the panel shaping - but there is a gap that many of us would love to see - focused on making the aluminum tube buck that holds the panels. Thanks for considering!

How about how to build a car on youtube in a series of videos maybe 1 a month? are we asking for too much? I know you are busy and filming/editing adds to the workload. But you do have an audience of active viewers who are subscribed to see 1.5 minutes of footage every 9 months. I am just curious about what's going on. Hope you are well, keep building and if you get a chance throw us a bone once in a while

Chris at what point in your design process do you see the car /vehicle with its skin on in your minds eye so you have a direction to head towards? Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺

Very cool, but why wouldn’t you mount this on a wall at waist height? My knees and back are killing me just watching. 😉🔧
3 года назад
No wall space. If you look closely it’s on wheels and is actually a material storage rack... but yes, have to stay flexible!

RÜNGE CARS I did see the wheels on my iPhone. I was guessing lack of wallspace as well. Time to build an overhang on an outside wall! 😉 I’m always thinking outside the box. 😁 Many years ago a very famous sailor (Paul Elvstrom) and sailmaker started building his first sails in a kitchen space too small so he ran the layout up onto the walls! I’ve built sails beyond the living room, through the dining room and out the slider onto the deck. Never enough room but sometimes a solution. 👍
