Join us on an exciting culinary journey as we explore the rich heritage of the Goud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community! Originally from Kashmir, the GSBs migrated to North Karnataka, bringing along their unique traditions and flavourful cuisine. Known for their love of seafood and aromatic spices, GSB cuisine is a delightful blend of coastal and Konkani influences that you won't want to miss. ✨
In this episode of Khaane Mein Kya Hai, we visit Maasli in Worli, Mumbai's only restaurant serving authentic Saraswat and GSB seafood. Award-winning and beloved by locals, Maasli is the place to be for a true taste of GSB culinary magic. From crispy fried delights to hearty curries, every dish here tells a story of tradition and taste. 😋
Kunal Vijayakar dives into a feast featuring some of Maasli's best offerings! He starts with the crispy Prawns Fry and moves on to the irresistible Crab Lollipops. The Konkani Ghee Roast Mutton leaves him speechless, while the Jumbo Crab GSB Style Sukkhe is a true showstopper. And let's not forget the flavourful GSB Tirfal Fish Curry that brings the taste of the coast right to your plate. 🤤
This episode is a food lover's dream come true! Kunal's enthusiasm and genuine love for GSB cuisine make this a must-watch. Each bite is filled with flavours that will transport you to the heart of the Konkani coast. Trust us, you don't want to miss out on this gastronomic adventure! 😋🍤🦀

GSB migration started from Saraswati river (that gave the name Saraswat), to Kannauj, to Gauda kingdom (areas of modern Bihar and Bengal) adding the name Gaud, then finally settling in Goa. During Portuguese invasions they migrated to Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. They were businessmen, and also administrators in Maratha Empire - Satara, Kolhapur, some in Pune and most in Gwalior. GSB of Shaiva and Smartha tradition are non-vegetarians but those following Vaishnavism are vegetarians (like most other Brahmins). As a GSB, its good to see GSB food on your channel.

Gowda means north Indian. There were five Dravida Deshas. We have five Dravida Brahmins. The Gujrath & Sindh (Gurjara), Maharastra, Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil (Tamil and Kerala). Then there were five Gowda Deshas. For some reason, Gowda Brahmins were allowed to eat meat, and the Dravida Brahmins were not allowed to eat meat. Konkani has words and similarities with Suraseni, Magadhi and Mahastrian Prakrit. GSB cuisine has many similarities with Oriaya cuisine and we even use similar words to describe some food. GSBs are a mixed lot from north India. Migration happened from the Saraswati river basin, Kaunaj and eastern Gangetic planes of Bihar & Bengal. When our ancestors came and settled down in Goa, they were in the middle of Dravida deshas. It was not acceptable there for Brahmins to eat meat. So they prefixed "Gowda" to continue to eat meat in Dravida Desha, and simultaneously claim Brahmin status. Please note that many north Indian Brahmins are allowed to eat Mutton and fish, but chicken and eggs are taboo.

Originally Sarswat Brahmin Caste was residents of Kashmir then migrated to Sindh & Punjab then Bengal & from Bengal they came to Konkan & Goa.. Even in Kutch region you find huge numbers of Sarswats. They are the bhattji priest of Lohana, Arora & Bhanushali community.

Just check my reply. Kashmiri Brahmins are Saraswats. They probably migrated north from the Saraswathi River after it dried up before 2000 BC. Some others migrated south, east etc. I do not think GSB's migrated from Kashmir. Well, I am a GSB.

The GSB Gaud Saraswat Brahmins are Vaishnavites While the CSB Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins are Shaivites. This branching out happened somewhere during the migration from the banks of the Saraswati river which diappeared. This drought forced the migration from Kashmir to Gaud desh and then the east coast (Goa). Then a large migration to southern coast Karwar- Mangalore- Cochin This time migration was due to the atrocities of the invading Portuguese and forced conversions to Christianity. The Konkani language also now incorporated Kannada words into their Konkani. language

Brahmins eating non-veg is very common. Maithil brahmins of bihar, brahmins of bengal assam and orrissa have fish as their staple diet. In uttrakhand garhwal area also non veg is common amongst brahmins and so is the case with maharashtra, goa n andhra. This whole propaganda against non-veg food is being propgated by baniya/jain media. India has always been a mix of veg /non-veg cuisine. Every area depeding on its tarrain and climate has had its distinct set of food items. Thats the beauty n charm of indian food. Lets not destroy this n lets not indulge ourselves into this unesessary n unwanted debate of veg vs non-veg eating. Food is a very very personal choice and article. We cant just force our likes or dislikes on others

Andhra brahmins don't consume meat i doubt even Maharastrian brahmins do. Why open mouth without knowledge? PS: I don't support veg food campaign by baniya-jain. I am not a meat eater.

Although most dishes on menu are GSB ,they miss the authentic taste due to commercial taste balance in the preparation to enhance the mumbaikar footfall. E.G. Dali toy- quintasential gsb dal is not anything like standard nkgsb or skgsb - try it at Rama Nayak matunga east if you want to know what the authentic dali toy taste is like. Similaly although tasty, fish curry with tirfal& many such dishes differ a bit from authentic konkani GSB preparation.
