Know I’m late to this video but I know people always come back or have just seen it for the first time, but for anyone wondering it’s not always the case but in a lot of cases to get the ridge length for this because the existing roof is hipped all you have to do is measure the length of the wall plate so it would be the width of the extension, so if the width of the wall plate was 2.4metres then most likely the ridge will also be that. Hopefully this helps a few people watching this 😅 you can always calculate it etc but this is just the easiest way. Also can just double check by putting a rafter on to see if it’s the right pitch and if not then just adjust it slightly etc
@ashleydavenport3794
@ashleydavenport3794 Год назад
Yes mate spot on! On this roof we cut the ridge slightly long then like you said offer that crown rafter up and check the angle and tweak the ridge to suit! Cheers for your comment. I wish I had talked on the video now and made it abit more informative! 💪

How did you establish the exact position of the lay boards to account for height over plate with having any commons in place ?
@ashleydavenport3794
@ashleydavenport3794 Год назад
@@masherco on the back section of the roof where it all lines in, the lay board has to go in 1 place (so it lines through) we planned the height of the wall plate to make sure are birds mouth wasn’t going to be to big. Then on the other side, we can measure the upstand up from the wall plate to the top of the lay board, then we just kept it parallel with the original roof. Hope this makes sense. Hopefully I’ve got a few of these roofs coming up soon so will do a more in depth one! 👌💪

How would you calculate or measure the 2 rafters that would normally be part of the 3 king common rafters, but they sit on the lay board?
@ashleydavenport3794
@ashleydavenport3794 4 месяца назад
Bit tricky to explain. But I think what we did there was plumb down off the end of the ridge and mark it on the old roof, then get the measurement from that to the new wall plate. Then we can transfer that mark onto the lay boards and then measure the rafter like normal. Then after that ones in they are just at 400 centres or what ever. Hope that makes sense! Cheers

Sorry to be jumping on here a few years too late 🤣, you know where the lay boards are did you have to have structural calculations as I’m assuming below the lay board on the other side of the hip would be less than the new rafter your using?
@ashleydavenport3794
@ashleydavenport3794 3 месяца назад
Hi mate, don’t worry haha! No we didn’t have to have any calculations for that section that goes on top of the old roof. We’ve done a few now and never had any issues from building inspectors. I suppose the weight gets a lot less as it rises up the roof on the valley so it should be fine just on the 9x1 lay board. Cheers for your comment 👍

Measure back the run from the corner of the wall plate on the extension less half the thickness of the rafter material. From that point back to the intersection of the old ridge is the length of the new ridge. It's one of those things that is easier to demonstrate rather than explain, 🔨 🇮🇪

I'm currently building my own so gle storey extension... and I'm wanting a hipped roof... I don't have plans ... can you tell me what the height difference would need to be between outer brickwork and inner blockwork? .... how much lower roughly should the outer course be if your wanting facia boards... no soffit. Cheers in advance . 👍
@ashleydavenport3794
@ashleydavenport3794 2 года назад
Hard to say because there are a lot of different variables like how steep the roof is etc. this one is a brick + wall plate higher than the outer skin. If your just using back to wall fascia and no soffit tho it would matter too much because you can adjust the fascia height to sort, as long as the brick work is abit above the fascia to hide the gap. Sorry I couldn’t be any more help, good luck 👌

Just wondering because it's awkward when you can't mark your end commons as they hit the valley board?
@ashleydavenport3794
@ashleydavenport3794 Год назад
I think it would be the same method regardless of the size of the extension. It was awkward marking the end commons on this one as they hit the valley so what we did was plumb down from the end of the ridge and got a measurement off the wall plate then marked the 2 valleys for the location of the commons, then just mark 400 c off that then. Hope that helps abit!
