As soon as I heard "Soran Bushi," I knew I found the right file. My maternal grandparents, both born in Meiji-era Hiroshima-ken, sang this to put me to sleep when I was a toddler. Now I'm a grandfather living far from parents and siblings. These songs take me back to a simpler and more loving time. どうもありがとうございます。

I’m Pacific Islander (Yap,Micronesian) residing in US. When I was little and still living in the islands I would hear my grandmother Hana sing these songs when we were gardening or cleaning, her father was Japanese during World War Two before the Americans saved us the Japanese people invaded our little island and killed so many of our kind after the Americans settled one of the Japanese soldier named Hiroshi married my great grandma and they had two children including my grandmother and she had my father, I would cry when she tells me the story of how her grandfather died but anyways this music brought back memories of my late grandmother who passed in 2008 at the age of 112 I was only 11 then. Awesome video! Would like to point out the bearded man in the picture is Ainu, an indigenous group that is culturally distinct from the majority Yamato people, with their own language and a unique musical tradition. Also Okinawa has a long history as the independent Ryuku kingdom, closely linked with Chinese culture. Thus those folk songs are drawn from their musical culture as well, however these versions appear to have those elements adapted for the dominant Japanese Yamato culture. I'm saying this not to knock this video, but hopefully give some context. The term "traditional music" can often become such a blanket term that it can erase the nuances of culture and history.

... I lived in Sapporo, and actually participated in the Soran Yosakoi festival. I heard this song everywhere during that festival but I had no idea that it was unique to Hokkaido 😭 Also, on an unrelated, the style of "Haru Bushi," starting at a base note, going through wavering flourishes and then returning, is eerily reminiscent of traditional Irish "Sean-Nós" singing 🤯

Greetings from greece! I like your folk vocal music a lot, and I find it very interesting that it is very similar to folk music from Epiros, a region in Greece. I hope you enjoy it and would appreciate your opinion. Here's a sample. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NFgx9xPeBLc.html , ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nJOV2OE0Zz0.html

I always say music like Japanese jazz/funk is where Japanese programers get their influences for videogames, and especially so in the case Konami's golden era where certain games are very much a mix of Japanese style funk fusion and Japanese folk music. Goemon games would be a prime example, and the first Ganbare Goemon for SFC/SNES comes straight away to mind. Some tracks are purely based on folk songs. The begining of one of the interior themes (minigame or fortune teller or w.e) is exactly the same begining as the Soran song. When I first ever played this album, I was sitting alone in the park when I put it on. I recognised the music just from hearing the first note (and keeping in mind Soran is the first track, so the first note literally was the first thing I heard), and while sitting alone in the woods I loudly exclaim "Oh shit I know this song!!" to noone but my suroundings. I wish I knew what all folk songs are used, as I would love to look them up. I really dig the fact that one of the best videogame sountracks ever produced is based largely on folk music that I am fast falling in love with. Even if I haven't found the songs used in game yet, it's still quite the treat to listen through all I can find to see if I recognise anything.

My father had an old tape from the 1950s with a Japanese song on it. I'd like to listen to it again, but the tape is gone. I remember the tune, but I don't know the words. So I can't search for it on RU-vid. I just remember these words: Yama de, hiro hi cho cho, Ohara. Can anyone help me find the song?

I own the " Min-Yo " folk songs of Japan by Iwao Matsubra book printed in 1946 and wanted to hear how the songs are supposed to be sung as opposed to how I am reading them in my head. THANK YOU for this. :)

Did you know the first song was first sang in Hokkaido in the beginning of Meiji era by a German: Jahren Zollern Zollern Zollern Zollern Zollern Heil! Heil! And "dokkoisho" actually means Germany, as Germany is written 独逸 in Japanese, usually pronounced Doitsu, literally pronounced Dokuitsu, and corrupted to dokkoisho.
@harshmnr
@harshmnr 3 года назад
Really? I'm curious where you heard that, because I've always heard that dokkoisho is just the sound for lifting heavy things, like "heave-ho" in English. ~:~

@@harshmnr Soran is a fisherman’s song as far as I know. It’s about hauling up nets. Doitsu used to be written in kanji, but in terms of this song, I think you’re right. It’s a heave-ho, let’s all work together song.

@@annephillips1870 kinda like how the Japanese word for part-time work is a corruption of "arbeit". The Japanese interacted very very heavily with Germany during the Meiji Period and a lot of words were loaned.
