Thanks for all the support! I am getting lots of comments about me not showing the whole knife tho. And I have to agree, this is pretty stupid. After editing for hours and hours I just totally forgot to put a shot of the whole k ife in. I still hope you guys enjoyed the video, I wont re-edit the video tho. If you really want to see the finished product, I would consider you to check out my instagram: Floris Postmes

Ive been a bladesmith for 12 years and I can confidently say your work is stunning. I watch lots of forging videos on youtube, but your skill with the hammer and forging to shape, along with bevel and thicknesses are very admirable. You’re not just roughing out with the hammer and doing all the work with the grinder, you’re really doing the work of the traditional bladesmith. Amazing, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
@net-twin-de
@net-twin-de 3 года назад
As a blacksmith you should know that it's not just about creating a perfect rough shape with the hammer, it is also about generating this basic shape in no more than just 5-7 heating cycles - this is where the true art of the blacksmith lies. Every person can achieve a beautiful basic shape if he sends the steel into the fire often enough. In order to maintain the quality of the steel, however, the steel should not be annealed more than 5-7 times. That was not to be seen in the video so your assessment and the praise is a bit premature. I have my deep doubts that a 17-18 year old will have the experience of forming steel in just 7 cycles, and as specialy in a soooo perfect way as in the video. A real professional blacksmith needs years of practice and experience for the task. Also with the processing of the "Tamahagane" you have already seen what kind of "professionals" are at work here - they just worked the slag with a hammer lol. You can see very clearly here that a couple of young people have scraped together some knowledge via watching RU-vid videos and having fun with mimic he job of a real blacksmith, and that's ok, but you should not see the result here as the workd of a real professional.

I thought it was an excellent video. I've watched a video within which craftsmen in Japan created a huge block of tamahagane. Incredibly laborious process, but what a superb steel as a result of effort. I own a bamboo wrapped chisel ground blade tamahagane kiridashi which I use frequently for small knife chores.
@net-twin-de
@net-twin-de 3 года назад
Many people believe that Tamahagane is very good steel. This assumption is wrong. The Tamahagane process happened because the ore that occurs in the Japanese region was not of particularly good quality, which is why this method was used very carefully to get the best out of the inferior material. The later processing up to the katana or tanto with the folding of the steel over and over again served purely to give the steel more purity. In the end you had finally won a usable piece of steel - but Tamahagane is and never was "good" steel.
@jonajo9757
@jonajo9757 2 года назад
@@net-twin-de It was a raw steel which had to be worked into high quality steel. Japanese sources weren't that poor in the first place, and folding just happened to be a common practice at the time in consolidating steel. The same process was done in Europe when they've had to work with carbon enriched iron to make steel.
