Does your Traeger pellet grill have a problem holding the correct temperature? In this short video I'll show you one of the main problems causing the temperature to drop during cooking... and not counting when you have to occasionally open the lid. Once the start up process is complete I'll set the temperature to 375. And after about 8 to 10 minutes it should reach the set temperature.
Even if it reaches the desired temperature I have seen it drop way below what I set it at even with the lid closed. And you can see it happening in this video. It reached about 375 degrees but for some reason the temp has dropped to around 325. And at times it drops even more. One of the first things to check is whether the fan is running. The fan under the pellet hopper provides air flow to the firebox where the pellets are burning. But chances are there won't be an issue with this.
The main cause that my Traeger can't hold a set temperature is because of debris inside the firebox. I'll explain what I mean. First take out the grate and the drip tray. And just so you know, checking the firebox should be part of your deep cleaning routine to keep the grill running efficiently. At this point you'll need a vacuum. Which does sound kind of weird for cleaning a barbecue grill. But here's why. That's because burning pellets leaves sawdust all over the inside of the enclosure. And this sawdust accumulates over time.
On first inspection there is a lot of sawdust on top of the auger cover. But the real problem that temperatures drop while the grill is running is because the firebox gets filled with sawdust. There's currently a good half inch in there. And this needs to be removed because as the sawdust builds, it blocks airflow and limits the number of pellets that can enter the chamber. But vacuum this out gently to avoid damage to the ignitor.
I recommend checking this after every 3-4 times you use the Traeger. Or more often if needed. And while you're at it inspect the temperature sensor. If it's dirty, wipe it with a piece of steel wool to remove any stuck on debris. And finally take a peek at the chimney for anything that can block airflow.
Whenever I find my Traeger pellet grill having a problem maintaining temperature, I know that the firebox has too much sawdust in it. And a good vacuuming fixes it for me every time. I have the the tailgater and just recently, the last 3 weeks started having problems. I set it to 375 and it hovers at 188. I vacuumed the tray(lol I thought I was the only one) but, will try cleaning the temp gauge. Thanks!

I have the traeger tailgater, and boy it’s been a bit of a nightmare. I will have it set at the lowest temp setting (180) and it will skyrocket to 400 sometimes. I’ve tried different pellets, I clean the ash everytime before use AND it’s on the highest P setting, meaning the longest delay in which the hopper feeds the fire. I am at a loss for new solutions, and think it’s pretty ridiculous to be on the lowest setting and be basically at a searing temperature.

Sorry you’re having those issues with your Traeger! That’s the opposite problem I’m always running into. My temps are always lower than I’d like. I’ll keep using my Traeger for awhile since it was quite expensive. But someday I’ll probably go back to a gas grill.

Oh wow! That’s completely opposite of what I’ve experienced on my Traeger. I’m always having low temperature issues. I’m not sure what’s causing your temps to go so high. Maybe it’s feeding pellets too fast or temperature sensor? Hope you find some answers!

I’ve had a Traeger for many years. It almost never works well. Traeger loves to blame it on the pellets and from my experience, it is rarely the problem. I’ve spent more time fixing it than I’ve cooked with it…literally! Let’s face it, it’s not a good product.

Here's my problem I cooked a rack of ribs for 4-5 on my Weber but my friend has a traeger pro 34 and it took literally 9 and 1/2 hours I don't know what we did I just kept bumping up the temperature and bumping up the temperature till something happened eventually at 350° setting it finally started cooking it. And his is a brand new unit.

@@jasonheesch609- I have a new 780 pro that I just got a couple weeks ago. And I think I’m having similar issues. Last night I did a 2 pound meatloaf that should’ve taken three hours at 2:25°. But it took nearly 5 and barely made it to 162° where I needed 165°. And the three baked potatoes next to it also didn’t get more than 170°. I had to put them in the microwave for a few minutes. I’ve only cooked on it, a half dozen times, and keeping it very clean, and have fresh pellets have been stored inside. Today I’m going to put an oven thermometer in there and bring it at the 225, and see what it says, and then kick it up to 450 in the same then contact customer service.

this video is not all that helpful. I have a brand new pro 34 and it has yet to keep a temp. I am going to return it.
