Traffic Dear Mr Fantasy - Live At The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 1972
"Dear Mr. Fantasy" is a rock song by Traffic from their 1967 album, Mr. Fantasy. Jim Capaldi contributed the lyrics, while Steve Winwood and Chris Wood composed the music.
In a song review for AllMusic, Lindsay Planer writes:
A slightly trippy dark and foreboding tone permeates both the lyrics and arrangement contrasting the rock-solid pop delivery. Tying it all together are Winwood’s emotive and residually mournful lyrics. With a distinct blue-eyed soul intonation - perfected during a seminal stint in the Spencer Davis Group - he effortlessly increases the drama with a combination of slightly behind the beat timing and empathic vocals.
Dave Matthews mentioned this song specifically as part of his speech inducting Traffic into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and this is the song performed by the surviving members of Traffic as part of that same induction.

Winwood what a talent! The golden age of music late 60's to mid 70's. He was so melodic and a virtuoso on guitar as well as keyboards. Traffic were an amazing band under the guiding hand of the great Jimmy Miller 👏

I tripped when I saw this video this week. I can remember my dilated pupils, I can remember the traces and tracts and the rush. I can remember the colors, the upside down chalkboard, people walking and talking in slow motion. Good damned times 70 - 75, and now at 68 I get to enjoy them again. Love you Mr. Winwood, and glad you made it past 27!

Straight Up 🎉I saw Traffic not once but Twice, and perhaps more than that as he used to play the Boston Music Hall in Boston, my Beantown baby back in the Day, 1972 and I was 16 years old!! The tickets were never more than $6 or $7 bucks and we used to seriously bitch when they would charge $12 a pop because the main artist that was playing there were World Famous and had been performing on the reg.! Anyway, I will fill you in with the rest of my exploits next time around 😅

My Dad is of this generation of rock and roll, seen them all, but he said when Traffic came to town there was no need for weed, trips, whatever. Cuz watching Capaldi imitating a lava lamp with his stage persona was enough to put him in the zone- and then Winwood jams like on this. What a group of musicians before us ladies and gentlemen....😮😮😮

I saw them at the Santa Monica auditorium in 1972 . I was 17 with my boyfriend then. Now my husband who was a bigger fan than I was. But that night I was hooked. They were awesome. Didn’t realize the swampers were playing that night, roger Hawkins on drums, David hood on bass and Barry on keyboards. Long live the swampers

Traffic albums are great through a good set of headphones. What sounds like hippie noodling reveals itself to be intricate and complex. It is sort of jazzy but doesn't really fall into any catagory.

I was 16, living in Santa Monica and snuck into this show. (If a band played the Civic between 1972 and 1984, I probably saw it.)This impressionable teenager was absolutely mesmerized by the Traffic jams. Fully hypnotized without swallowing, smoking or snorting anything. I'm pretty sure Steve couldn't say the same thing... eyes like saucers. After seeing this show, I spent my paper route money on every Traffic LP I could find... and continued doing so. What a tight, improv psych rock band. And IMHO, everyone can f*** the Hall of Fame. These guys are in Valhalla. Edit: PRODUCED BY TAYLOR HACKFORD??? ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME. No wonder it was so good for 1972. Seven years later, he's doing the brilliant but exceptionally underrated "The Idolmaker," (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if only to watch Ray Sharkey), then on to "Officer/Gentleman", THEN Against All Odds. I had no idea he cut his teeth with films like this. Explains why this comes off as so magnificiently. I feel honored just to say "Thank you, Mr Capaldi!"
