Tragedy of the Commons 1: What the Tragedy Is 

This is a fair and apolitical explanation of Garrett Hardin's ideas on resource depletion. His book, the Tragedy of the Commons, is widely taught in universities and politically controversial, so much so that RU-vid has turned off comments on Hardin's own video. RU-vid is so politically biased it turned off comments on Garrett Hardin's own video. The controversy begins with how the problem should be addressed. See Dr. Hick's video 2 on the free-market solution. In fact, Hardin himself offered some controversial solutions for the problem. I disagree with some of them. But his basic thesis that helping poor people or poor nations makes them less self-reliant and more dependent is hard to refute. Our current welfare program is a case in point. The Democrats answer is more welfare and bigger government, which hasn't worked in the past and won't work in the future, because the poor have no incentive to get off welfare and, therefore, become permanent dependents. Similarly, there is a price to pay for open immigration, as the UK and Sweden both found out, especially when the immigrants do not share your culture and governmental traditions. It isn't enough to disagree with Hardin; the challenge is to come up with a better solution.
