I try to read everything I can on these comic geniuses. I do know that (from a biography I read, and from his daughter's interview on the collection) that Groucho was not always in favor of holding women in the higher regard. His daughter would often hurry off to Harpo's house because Harpo was a "loving, doting father that genuinely cared for his family." Groucho is hilarious, even today but, Harpo is the sweetheart I look forward to seeing in every movie I have of them. Great video. Thank you!

I feel like all of them should have lived like kings. Some of my personality comes from my grandparents exposing me to their films for most of my youth. I wanted to be like them. Cartoon characters bound in human form. My partner still talks about the cigar and eye roll that started our first conversation. The Marx brothers films taught me to smile through the tough times. A bad situation is not made better by pouting about it, laugh at it and laugh hard. Chances are that you won't remember most of the bad times but you will remember laughing through it.

You are all wrong about A Night at the Opera. Thalberg knew his methodical method of filmmaking clashed with the Marx' spontaneous style of comedy. So before production began, Thalberg sent the Marx Brothers on the road touring theaters wherever MGM films were running. Before the film, the Marx' would go on stage and perform a scene from the movie. First they performed as written, the next performance they would change the wording or timing, and so on making notes on what lines got the most laughs. And it worked! The same was done for A Day at the Races. Groucho thought highly of Thalberg, and said his interest in making movies died with Thalberg. Also, reports of Groucho's dementia were the result of a botched psychological examination. The doctor examining Groucho did not know who he was or was familiar with his comedy. When she asked him, "What would you do if you were lost in the woods," Groucho answered "Find a phone and call my parents." She thought he was being serious.

I always wondered why there was no biopic as of yet, thanks for clearing that up. I used to manage a video store in the 90's and I would often play their movies like Duck Soup on the screens in the store. I would like to think that maybe I introduced the brothers to some people who would never have thought to check them out for themselves. "Hello, I must be going!" is still a song that pops up in my head on occasion to this day.

that's too bad about the bio-pic. but theses guys were too good to be imitated. the way they were screwed by Paramount helps me understand why Groucho was paranoid about going broke for the rest of his life. he also lost a bundle in the '29 crash. hundreds of thousands, as I understand it. don't quote me. look it up. before the movies, they did really well on Broadway. that's why they felt confident insulting Thalberg in his office. he made them wait for a 10 o'clock appointment way past 10. Groucho said on Dick Cavett, "we didn't feel we needed the movies, being comedy stars on the stage. so while we waited, we stripped down naked, and roasted potatoes in his office fireplace. he never kept us waiting again. I told him ,look we'll be here at 10 on Monday (paraphrasing),but we're not here to waste our time"."the rest is history. that took balls.
