There was a Russian cosmonaut in the Soviet Union (Komarov) whose spacecraft failed at reentry I believe. It was known the craft was not ready so while he was plunging to the ground in an uncontrollable spin he was furiously cursing every Soviet boss he felt was responsible. I think he requested his remains to be exhibited and they were. It was a big piece of burnt and mangled flesh without recognizable human shape. You can see it online.
@PolaroidLandCamera-cm8ke
@PolaroidLandCamera-cm8ke 11 месяцев назад
The thing about that Russian cosmonaut is that he knew that it didn’t work and he would die. Although if he didn’t do it, the guy after him would and that guy was Yuri Gagarin, the first person in space.

@NewTypeDilemma01
@NewTypeDilemma01 10 месяцев назад
@@PolaroidLandCamera-cm8ke Soyuz 1? Sorta. Literally _every_ engineer knew it wasn't ready for flight and even the ground controllers mid-flight were not convinced Soyuz 1 could land safety. Since it was the height of the Moon Race, a lot of tests and safety measures were skipped. Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov - as Gordon Cooper did on his Mercury flight - managed to hit his reentry angle manually, and just when everyone thought the worst was over, the main parachutes failed to open. Thing is, Yuri Gagarin, Komarov's best friend, tried to get himself installed as the Soyuz 1 pilot under the gamble that the authorities wouldn't risk getting the first man in space killed. He was unsuccessful, Komarov was sent, and the rest was history. As for the recordings regarding Komarov cursing the team the whole way down, their authenticity remains debated to this day.

We did the Apollo 1 crew so wrong. They voiced concerns about the cockpit being 100 percent oxygen, they voiced concerns over the amount of flammable material, they voiced concerns over the amount of time it took for an emergency egress, they had complaints about the complicated mechanism and tools needed to open the hatch, and nasa was there the whole time saying “it’s fine, I promise, we would never let anything happen to you and besides, we will be right there to help you get out in emergency… It ended up taking the pad and egress crew over 10 minutes to reach them, they were dead in 30 seconds. The high oxygen environment essentially acted as an incinerator. Even worse, nasa left their bodies in the spacecraft for over 8 hours so they could “study what went wrong” It also becomes even more of a messed up story when you realize that either Gus Grissom or Ed White were destined to be the first on the moon, not, Armstrong. In all reality, the Apollo 11 crew probably would have been white, Chaffee and Grissom with white being mission lead, therefore first on the moon. RIP to all of them.
@dmmchugh3714
@dmmchugh3714 4 месяца назад
I recall my parents discussing this fire for years after the tragedy. The funerals were national mourning events. Grissom and Chaffee were buried at Arlington Cemetery; White was buried at West Point. President Johnson attended all 3 funerals. I believe NASA Day of Remembrance, which was held on 1/25/24, includes the Apollo1 mission. Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee, Ed White: Ad Astra per Aspera, 1/27/1967.

“Can you egress at this time?” No, because the Block 1 Apollo capsule wasn’t designed for quick egress on the launch pad. Even if the fire hadn’t killed the astronauts as quick as it had, they had zero chance of escaping through a plug-type hatch with the inside pressurized to 15 PSI. This accident is a good example of what happens when unacceptable risks are normalized. The same poor risk management would later doom the crews of the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.

That was the really sad indelible image in people's mind in 1967. This recording really makes you understand how sad and horrible this tragedy was. Imagine what the Challenger and Columbia astronauts cried in their last seconds of life

We watched this on television in school - no sound, but the program was cut short. We were in 4th grade, our teacher started crying.

Are you sure you're not confusing this with the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster because a lot of students watched the Space Shuttle Challenger explode, but I don't think the Apollo 1 incident was being shown live on TV.

This was so tragic, to hear the screams and to know they knew that they were not going to survive. It would be like waking up in a casket inside a crematorium , what a nightmare.
@aalstom

The fire didn't kill them as a couple burns would be easily survivable. They died to toxic chemicals and smoke as the fire melted away their suits and the tubes that supplied breathable oxygen. Then they inhaled the fumes and died immediately

Not in *that* amount of time..... . A fire which is not overly-near you can cause you to heat up and then overheat you in a matter of seconds, around (15 - 30 seconds). Smoke caused from plastic or aerospace-grade material like carbon fibre and such will cause a choking that causes you to suffer breathing problems for circa 2 minutes (20 seconds plus being able to speak comprehensive-ably, or 2 to 3 minutes before you pass out from lack of oxygen). How do I know this? Oh, *both* of my parents are doctors..... one of them a surgeon with many papers written on them which was submitted to Johns Hopkins. So. Yeah, that.

the brain hears what we are reading ....its also been said that he is saying "open her up," meaning the guys that are working on the hatch . Write down, open her up on paper, and read that as you are listening . They did an investigation on this pretty recent, and the conclusion was ... They don't know what he's actually saying.
