Legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald gained a devout audience for over six decades, earning the nickname "The First Lady of Song." But her troubled past isn't usually mentioned in tributes and remembrances of her career. This is the tragic real-life story of Ella Fitzgerald.
Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia, on April 25, 1917, to her mother, Temperance Fitzgerald. Her father left the picture when Ella was two and a half. Temperance struggled to make ends meet and moved north to Yonkers, New York, with her daughter and new boyfriend, Joseph. There, young Ella thrived in school, taking an interest in the church choir and dance and falling in love with the jazz records her mother brought home.
She learned to imitate her favorite singers and would take trips to the city to check out the latest steps at dance halls.
That determined young girl would be waylaid by grief. In 1932, Temperance died in a car accident, leaving 15-year-old Fitzgerald an orphan during the height of the Great Depression. After Temperance's passing, young Ella's stepfather allegedly mistreated her. By 1933, she'd fled to her aunt's in Harlem to escape. However, according to NPR, Ella's aunt struggled to support her.
Watch the video to learn more of the tragic things about Ella Fitzgerald.

I was one of her visiting nurses for a few weeks mid 80's, and she was lovely & down to earth; always asking about how I was doing and about my kids. She told me stories, including the one about Marilyn Monroe, and sometimes sang a few lines here and there. I remember her calling, "somebody get the doooooorrr..." when I rang her bell. She was upstairs, but her voice resonated throughout the house. She told me, " never mind memorex, I could have broken every glass in the house" ( When a painful episode occurred - HIPPA) She also told me that Bill Cosby sent her a basket of flowers with a card saying, " A ticket, a basket - here's your damn basket". That made her laugh. She was a beautiful soul.

Being black in America was/is difficult at best. But being a black female was a double-bias. Black AND female. I can only imagine the hardships placed upon this black woman who just wanted a place in life. To matter in some way and to be recognized. Good for you Ella. The Light blessed you with a peerless voice and we are all still listening to Ella and shaking our heads wondering how someone could be that naturally gifted. Way to go girl. Life is hard, but you found a way.

Annie Sue, ‘At Last’ is most famously associated with Etta James. But I’m sure Ella’s version is also fantastic. I agree it was awesome for Ella to tell the State Home to jump in a lake. She managed to prosper despite them, not because of them!

Nothing but the truth Brown, many many singers have covered “At Last” including Ella Fitzgerald and Beyoncé. But Etta’s version is by far the most famous and (IMO) the best. I thought the Obama’s really dissed Ms. James when they chose Beyoncé to sing it at the inauguration ball. But Etta was just not ‘hip’ enough for them and their “target demographics”. Booooo!

The First Lady of Jazz! Best singer there ever was. A TRUE lady with not a drop of diva in her. I only wish I could have told her how amazing I think she is and that she will always and forever have my love and respect. God Bless you, Ella. May you rest in peace that you will never be forgotten.
