Trail Review: Gold Canyon Trails
We hit the Gold Canyon trail system fro the Baseline access, and went clockwise, (Gold Canyon - Cougar - 2Doo - Lost Goldmine - Gold Canyon DT east - K Trail - Vortex - Gila Monster - 2GM - and back to Gold Canyon).
With all the rain we've had over the last winter and spring, a "super bloom" occured. About 6 different plants and catus were all blooming at the same time. They usually bloom at different times with some overlap between two or three variaties of plants. But this year was different. We caught it just right this year to witness a mass convergence, creating a kelidescope of colors. That's a rarity that happens once every ten years or so. You might have a one, maybe two week window at best.
For the most part the trails were not rough, but somewhat rocky, with chicken head to baseball sized rocks lying loose on the trail. It was not uncommon to lose traction up some of the steeper inclines. Several of the rougher sections reminded me of the White Tanks and Estrella competitve loops.
The trails were overgrown with cactus and low lying plant life. We were dodging cholla cactus quite a bit on the west and north sections of our loop. I picked up a couple hitch hikers along the way and had to stop several times to dislodge a little cholla ball from my pack and shoes. Brittle bush almost obscured the trails on the south sections, hiding hedgehog and prickly pear cactus that grew along side of the trails. It took a bit of concentration to keep on the trail and dodge both rocks on the trail ,and cactus hiding on the sides. Occasionaly, we'd hit a rock that would kick us over to one side of the trail or the other, usually into a cactus hidden under the brittle bush.
It was a great ride in total with lots of great scenery of the souh side of the Superstitions and multicolored blooms all around us. I definitely want to go back and do some more exploring.

That was an absolutely beautiful video. I have never seen the desert so colorful, and the sky at the start too! I have to get back there and ride this. Liked and subscribed.

Thank you for the comment @kevinhughes6644. It was even better in person. The camera never does color and scale full justice. In my book nothing beats spring time in the Sonoran Desert.

Beautiful. I grew up in Tucson, and those chollas scare me! I don’t have what it takes to ride those kind of trails.

I was pretty nervous during parts of that ride. Lots of loose little rocks just waiting to slide you into one of those prickly puppies. And not to mention the hitchhikers that spin up off a tire if you even brush past one of those loose little buggers on the trail. I’ve had more than a few spin up onto an ear, shoulder, arm, etc. My partner in crime, Scott, was riding there a few weeks earlier and fell onto a hedgehog cactus. I actually wiped out recently and put my arm and hand into a dead one. First time of doing that in 20+ years of riding.

Good video. I like that you took the time to showcase the scenery and vegetation. I've hiked out there but I won't ride - too rocky for me. You guys can ride anywhere and have fun.

Thanks for the comment. Part of the reason we’re out there is for the scenery and just enjoying being out in it. We will go do the rocky stuff, but anymore I prefer to do the smoother flowy stuff. We’ve gotten a little spoiled riding out in the Browns Ranch preserve.

Nice video of the trails. I ride out there Jan-May each year. I’ve switched to an ebike but and it’s much more fun now.

Thank you for the like and the comment. That was a fun ride. Too bad we have to wait for a year to do one like that again. Stay tuned for the video a ride that was quite the opposite.

I believe we did this ride in late March. The video just doesn’t do the colors proper justice.

One of my favourite videos of places to ride in Arizona. I live in Toronto, Canada and hv rented a house in Good Year for this coming Feb and March. I’m taking my bike with me. I would like to ride the same route you did if it’s not too far from Goodyear. Can you let me know exactly where that is and if I need a pass? Thks, Bruce

Thank you for the comment Bruce. I’d say you’re about an hour plus by freeway from the Gold Canyon area, depending on where, in Goodyear, you will be staying. You’re basically gonna be at the opposite end of the valley from Gold Canyon. That being said, there are lots of great trails around the valley to which I will gladly drive an hour. Also, there are some spectacular trails near where you will be. White Tanks Regional Park and Skyline Regional Park are just north of Goodyear proper. And There is also Estrella Mountain Park to the south. Spring time in those areas are just about as spectacular as Gold Canyon. There are no fees for Gold Canyon. However, there are fees to get into any of the regional parks. Currently it’s $7 per car to get in.

You might also consider Browns Ranch. It’s a 7 mile by 7 mile preserve with miles of awesome, smooth crushed granite trails through huge granite rock formations and your quintessential desert plant life. It’s like someone took all the different desert plants around the lower half of AZ and threw them all together in one area. I’d say that area would rival Gold Canyon in the spring with the added bonus of all the cool rock formations. It’s one of our go to spots for riding. Again about an hour or so away, but worth it. And there are no parking fees. Hit us up here when you’re about to come down. We’d be happy to show you around to some of the premier trails around the Phoenix Valley.

To get to Gold Canyon, take the 10 freeway to the Tempe area, then jump on the 60 heading east. Go past Apache Junction, the freeway will end and you’ll start encountering traffic lights. Head North (left) onto S Kings Ranch Road until you get to Baseline Road. There is a small gravel parking area the on the SW corner of S Kings Ranch & Baseline. You’ll have to ride a little ways east, to the end of Baseline, to get to the gate, marking the trailhead.
