I have been wearing Merrell Moab’s low hiking boot and absolutely love them. I have hiked 45 miles in the last 5 weeks and have even had them completely soaked. I couple them with smart wool socks and have not had one blister. Love , Love my Merrill’s and my wool sock :)

Carolyn, Old nurse here. The classic stabilizing exercise for ankles (in addition to depending upon your really great boots), is to write the alphabet with your big toe, while sitting down in a chair. You will feel the strengthening of your ankle and the added proprioceptive ability. I love your plans!♡

I'm 60 and wear a 10W. I've had foot troubles for a whole now. My podiatrist told me the damage was from wearing the wrong shoes when I was in my youth and on into my adult years. He also said "grab the heel and toe, if you can twist the shoe, it's not going to provide much support". I listened and what a difference. Love the socks!!! ❤

Carolyn, I hope your checking out “Second chance hiker”. 🏃🏽‍♂️Wow this guy was way overweight when he started the PCT, I felt so bad for him, he has had to be in such pain and persevered somehow, so so many miles making friends along the way. Documenting his journey....He is an amazing young man. Maybe you can interview him after it’s all said and done “compare notes”. A young man overweight, compared to a 50 year old woman’s, journey on this trail. Who had it harder ect....❤️👍🏻😊🏃🏽‍♂️🚶🏽‍♂️🏃‍♀️🚶🏼‍♀️. That would be quite the story “two journeys, seperate Times” He has somehow plowed through it I can’t imagine how he’s done it..❤️❤️❤️❄️🌧☃️☔️💥 Please give this young man A thumbs up in your YT channel!😊😊. Your both in our prayers🙏🏼

I love Merrell shoes. They are all I wear in the cooler/colder months. I'm excited to follow your hike, Carolyn. When I was a teen, in the early 1970s, I wantec to hike the PCT. I bought a few books and read them a couple of times. But, life intervened and it never happened. So, I will live vicariously through your journey!

My husband has MS, he goes through shoes like crazy because although he walks with forearm canes, he isn’t able to lift his feet like we can. With that being said, we discovered Merrell’s many years ago. The soles wear but last longer than other shoes we have tried. The most important thing, they are warm in the winter with wool socks because we live in New Hampshire, but they are light weight which helps him walk better. He wears them year round, below the ankle ones in the summer and above the ankle in the winter. Also, I like them for him because of the support they give his feet. I think you will like them also. I wear them as winter boots in the winter, I hate shoes anytime of the year, but Merrell’s are very comfortable.

Thanks for sharing the information on boots. I purchased some Salomon trail shoes and thought I’d be able to use them hiking but found the same thing you did - that they didn’t have enough support for hiking trails. I have a pair of older Reichle boots that I’ve actually had resoled because it was better than having to break in a new pair of boots. I use the Super Feet inner sole as well. It is the best inner sole that I have found for my high arch. I have used the Smart Wool socks but I have gotten blisters with them.

I had some Merrell grey flannel clogs and was the most comfortable shoe I ever owned. They lasted me over 5 years. Merrell won't let you down. Wool socks are the best. I like Carharts. They are well made.

Carolyn, we have something in common. I also lost both great toenails from a hike. I had not prepared at all. Wrong shoes.. wrong socks... and totally out of shape. A friend told me about wool socks and now that is what I wear 95% ..of the time. I do occasionally wear SILLY SOCKS but they aren't on my feet all day. I love SMARTWOOL & Darn Tough. Also have some Wright Socks but they are low ankle style and I don't care for that style. I think I would take a 3rd pair of socks. Just in case you need longer for a pair to dry out... or heaven forbid one falls into your camp fire while you have them drying....😉

Realize as you thru-hike, your feet expand so it is best that you get a half to full size bigger shoe so you do not lose your toenails. Also, I will reiterate what someone else said, it is usually best not wear your trail runners/boots over 4-500 miles because they start to lose their structural integrity and can effect your feet. Good luck in your hike!!

Excellent advice on footwear and socks. I too use wool socks with a thin sock liner---I buy the liners separately so I've got the flexibility to wear them or not. Around camp I might just wear the wool sock to have a little more room in the boot for lounging. For a few years I did use very light trail runners which are fine on a relatively smooth trail, but as soon as you hit a very rough patch or snow or a lot of downhill, the boots are way better! Also, with the liner socks, NO BLISTERS!

Whatever works for you ! I am a hobbit sized female and still require a sturdy durable boot for extensive terrain. You wouldn't catch me on a long hike with trail runners. HECK NO. That's asking for an injury, in the middle of nowhere, then next think you know your face is added to the company of MIssing411. Yaaaaaaaas, WOOL is the way to go. Sheering the sheep is not inhumane. It is more cruel not to sheer the woolly cuties. I am excited for your trip Carolyn. I wish you many blessings and much safety while out there in the back country.

My boots! I wore the same Oboz hiking the Inca trail. My only complaint was the ankle caused pretty bad bruises from doing so many steps. REI taught me several lacing techniques to help with the fit, but I ended up having to loosen the ankles toward the end of my hike.

I am 57, and 180 lbs. as well. Your experience mimicks mine. When I did Cottonwood Pass to Whitney, I used trail runners (Soloman as well) and just not enough support for my feet. Particularly with all the rocks, I found the bottoms to be too flexible, and I rolled my ankle once. I go back and forth between the Oboz, and the Merrell's. Both are mid boots. Not sure if it is my age or weight, but I definitely need more support than when I was younger.

We are not all about the RV parks and sitting around the RV all day. You are inspirational. I used to travel by myself (with my dogs). I was an extensive weekend warrior . Fortunately met a fella who enjoys the things I enjoy and we hope to explore some great trails. Not a lot of experience in backpacking (on my part anyway), but would really like to do some short overnights. Great videos. We are both gear junkies for sure. Suggestion: Switch your boots and socks twice a day. Carry 2 sets of boots with you. It is not advised that you ware the same shoe every day. Too much ware. Pros which shoes every day and conventions vendors twice a day because of standing and walking. Your hike will go the way you feet go. If your feet fail so will the hike. Take care

Compression socks/sleeves help me with fatigue, so I may not even need to lighten the shoe that I love. Looking forward to your footwear updates

Thank you. Lost my nails as well. I never hike without my silicone mary janes now and wool socks.

Such good information on boots. I have found my feet swelling....well....even on day hikes. So I need to consider going up 1/2 size. My hair is highlighted as yours is.....so it is awesome to see you are hiking and I am not watching a 20 something year old. Our needs are definitely different. I wear Oboz mid and the lower (I have so many freakin hiking shoes/boots). I like the stability of their boots. I wear Hoka to work in (I am a nurse), and I walk in these, but not a fan of their hiking boots that I have tried yet. But the Solomon trail runners for walking the dogs is a good choice as well, or day hikes (depending on the terrain of course). Have always loved Keen sandals but not their women's hiking boots. Hey if you ever need a great pair of water shoes I am currently wearing a Chacos completed enclosed water shoe. Love talking gear. Love talking shoes and boots because it is such a big deal the older I get. I just can't throw on any old shoe/boot anymore. Its a big deal. As far as socks....if you get a chance to try out FITS....give them a try. My fav. Made in Tennessee. Love their cushioning. Thanks again.

The boots made today are almost unwearable. My new Altra Mid trail runners feel like my Italian Vasque Skywalkers from the 90s. My new Vasque Skywalkers from Vietnam are heavy, stiff junk. Sleep tight, don't let the bears bite.

Bobby Harper, I had the best hiking boot in the world..in the 90's too. Vasques. They fit my foot to perfection. Made the mistake of taking them to REI to have them resoled. Now I practically have car tire tread..heavy as heck, thick, clunky. So disappointed.

Hi Carolyn❣ I don't know if this is a good idea for hiking? When I was in the army and in the desert in Saudi I wore gortex socks and I also loved my gortex jacket! Even though your hike is over lol I'm just catching up on all your videos and thought maybe this would come in handy for the future.

Yes wool has its benefits VS. Cotton but I prefer nylon for temp control and moisture is less of a problem if feet remain cool. Blistering is for me a tougher problem to solve and nylon seems to solve that

Very good information about different hiking boots and socks. Thanks Carolyn. It's funny I was thinking on your last few videos of your pre hiking little trips about your hiking boots. I was thinking what kind of boots you wear and what's the difference between boots and shoes and you do a video on it lol thanks again you've answered my questions. Love the video. Safe travels Ooh I forgot to ask you. Did you get a new tattoo on your left forearm?
