Sailing our RL28 trailer sailer "Neringa" out of Able Point Marina Airlie Beach to explore the central Whitsunday Islands. With 10 days we circumnavigate Whitsunday and Hazelwood Islands visiting Gulnare inlet and discover an old timber tramway. Windy bay and then White Bay on Hazelwood Island are our next stops to explore and snorkel on Hazelwood Reef. With signs of cyclone damage everywhere we were hopeful that this sheltered reef may have escaped. The coral and fish life were good but even here damage was seen. Chance bay and Hill Inlet were our next stops in this episode. Except for the first and last days of our trips we had near perfect weather with sunshine and light winds. An absolutely glorious trip!

Good stuff, we were there mid July left my Farr 7500 at Hastings and ended up with a Jeanneau 44 as the 34 foot boat we had hired had a damaged keel.. love your vids And your boat, great set up

Thanks for the the feedback. The same thing happened 10 year ago when we hired a 28ft boat which was upgraded to a 36ft boat due to keel damage. The Farr would do well in the Whitsundays. Cheers Mark

Hi Mark, good to see you are back, and when I saw this I thought it was going to be about going up the Yarra River.What great weather you had.

Hi Mark, We couldn't believe our luck, with the 2 weeks before having nearly contiuous 25-30 knot winds. Had 20 knots to sail out to the islands and 25-30 knot winds on the sail back. The rest of the time it was like the tourist brochures every day...sunshine and light winds....that just never happens but it did this time. :)

Well what a good time you had , wind in the right direction, Like having a northerly to Geelong then a south westerly back to Melbourne. This dose happen but not all that often.

I have enjoyed your vid's before and this is another excellent one of a great area.... Cyclone Debbie was early April ? when was your visit.... I always get 20 knots one day and 35 the next 5 days.. you looked like you had nice weather.

Debbie was early april and we were there early july. Water clarity was great but the damage was still very evident. Still a beautiful place despite this. Past trips have always been very windy, we lucked it out this time with 10 straight days around the islands with winds of 5 to 15 knots!

Great to watch and very informative. Thank you. Is it possible to leave car and trailer at Able Point for 10 days? Thank you

7 days maximum at the boat ramp with no fee. Someone gave me the tip of parking the car opposite the Cannonvale police station 12 minutes walk away from Able Point. You drive back along the main road to the west and take the first turn to the right, the police station is almost on the corner. As it turns out there are boat trailer parks along the opposite side of the road. Great place to park, and the police station gives a feeling of security for the car and trailer. 12 minute brisk walk back to the boat ramp along the main road over the hill. Unfortunately the roads along the bottom of the hill don't go through.

Great. Then in this case it might be easier to launch at the Volunteer Marine Rescue Club on Altmann Avenue.. Many thanks!

Hi Mark , would you have liked to sail from Melbourne around the East coast to Whitsundays ? ,
@TRAILERYACHTADVENTURES
@TRAILERYACHTADVENTURES 5 лет назад
Hi John. Absolutely would have loved to sail there. Like all things you need the time to do it. Retiring in 3 or 4 years time and toying around with the idea of sailing from the Gippsland Lakes where I will be living by then to Darwin. Will have to wait to see how it pans out, my wife also has a long list of projects for the property that we are moving to!

Thanks for the vid Mark. I've just bought a Farr6 and plan on following your cruising wake! Lots of Port Philip and Gippsland this Summer and adventures further afield to come. I've found your videos really helpful and watched your trips to Werribee River and Portarlington prior to setting off on my first little solo venture a few weeks ago. One question you may be able to answer - can you anchor at beaches around the bay? I know of the various public moorings, but haven't seen any mention of people setting anchor during offshore conditions at Rosebud/McCrae/Sorrento etc. Cheers and thanks, Stu

Hi Stu, Congratulations on the Farr6. You'll love the sailing, so many great places to enjoy! You can anchor anywhere there is no restriction, the main one are shipping channels. I have anchored off many beaches and islands in the bay, just be sensible about swinging room with other boats and not blocking access to ramps, piers etc. I use a lot of public moorings because they are easy and guarantee holding and swing room. When anchoring you want to make sure the anchor sets well. I left my previous boat on anchor in westernport once and it dragged into other boats and then continued out into the bay proper without me. A good anchor is worth every penny spent on it. My oversize manson supreme is brilliant and holds like a rock. This trip to the whitsundays was on anchor at every stop. Cheers Mark
