Trailhead Theft is a big problem. My attempt to try and curb or catch with a trailcam

I'm not really much of a hiker. I'd rather disappear into the tree line and wait for the thieves with my AR.

Don't stress. They will break into your vehicle in Seattle too. I know. My rental got it and the cops wouldn't even come and look. I'll never go back to Washington.

Think you need to hide a camera up in the trees where it can’t be seen. Additionally have one out of the parking lot down a ways where the assholes think they are clear, take their hoodies off, get in their cars.

If only there were cameras that went on your dash... they could call them... uhh... idk. Anyway, I hike with a firearm, so they had better be done when I return.

Hang out wait and leave them for dead. Years ago, I put a coyote trap, like a small bear trap, on my passenger seat, bolted by chain to the floor, covered in a shirt with thief bait on top, doors unlocked. It took a few days but a thief took the bait and had his arm broke and was trapped unable to free himself. This isn’t illegal but leaves you open to personal lawsuits. I used a cheap car stripped of VIN and plates. It won’t end theft, but that guy will never forget it. Very satisfying.

Around here in Delaware construction sites use them mounting them on tall post to stop thieves . Touch the pole and your done

Yikes that's crazy! Seems like it has alot to do with your geographical location in this country. This never happens out by me and I would flat out just not visit places where this happens. It's been working pretty good for the last couple decades for me

2-channel dash cam with parking mode. Install two of them and you’ve got 360 degrees coverage plus interior. And it’s working for you all the time, not just trailheads, and not just parked, all the time. All is mounted interior and much more secure.

Theft: what you take from others will be taken from you…in equal or greater value. Therefore, there is no advantage in theft. Contrarily, what you give to others will be given back to you, in greater measure. Took me years to sort out the Law of Cause and Effect/law of reciprocity, etc….now that the Golden Rule is the primary ethic in my life, it has flowed with effortless ease. Forgive me for waxing philosophical, but when I hear of theft it just reminds me of the Reciprocity Law.

you can put some security screws on the outside cover instead of the screws that came with it, and it takes a specialty tool to remove; not something you can go to the box store and buy, which will make it a little more difficult to break into. I think the cameras are a great idea; it's a good deterrent. If the break ins are common, then it's probably a couple of people that do it regularly rather than just random people. I hope this is working for you. It would be nice to go hike and not have to worry about whether you truck or other vehicle is being busted up by some thief.

Try a "plot cam". You hide it to watch entire area. It takes pics at regular intervals. Like time lapse.

Do any of the trail cams have WIFI recording to Cloud memory? That way even if it is stolen, it will keep on recording to your Cloud site!

Good plan and you capture the pictures of the vehicles and the would be culprits. The same kinds of filthy criminals attack cars parked at the Bagby Hot Springs in orygun.

Good luck with that... You will be able to view thieves breaking into your car while you were miles away... Not sure if this is helpful.

I live in East oakland..known for it's many issues. I am considering buying & setting up a trail camera to record those who dump trash down the street @ the park. They drop off & later strip cars as well. I'm concerned someone will notice & take the camera, Also worry about the data card being filled by vehicles passing by. Then who do I pass the info to when I get some revealing recordings.

It should be mandatory castration/neutering on site. No courts or police. Might even get some volunteers to hold them down! Yea, we got the same problem with a parking area for the bike path. Police started driving through and it helped but not completely.

I used to go up to index to watch the kids climb the walls the granite walls up there. I'd stay all weekend in the same spot I mean tell him go on a hike I watch and I do.. Cause where I lived in town you seem to have these creepy things coming out every night all night but especially 5 AM. Sorry to hear that there's still such disrespect for other human things

Idk you can get car cams for cheap, why wouldn’t you just invest a 150$ on them, same price as the trail cam!

Now that you have a decoy camera, that is subject to theft or easily rendered ineffective. You need a hidden camera placed in an advantages location. When and if you are able to apprehend a thief, citizens arrest? Are you capable of this action?

Long method: So, what I’m going to do is bring my pickup truck, battery powered impact with sockets and a grinder with cutoff wheel. Crawl under your truck. And unbolt that cheap ass brush guard, either with impact and sockets or the angle grinder. Than I’m going to put my new trail cameras in the bed of my truck. Ironically attached to your guard. Short method: Take a long ass spud bar, wedge it between brush guard and “secured” cameras and crank the shit outa things until camera mount brackets break. Collateral damage to other parts of vehicle is totally acceptable. Than put my new cameras in my bag (or bed of truck depending on how “extra” I feel that day) and walk away. Shorter method: Climb into your truck, hug the steering wheel to break the lock, peel the column and touch the starter switch. Now I have a new-to-me truck. 🍻

Criminals don't give a sheet about cameras. Drive a junky car to the trailhead and leave nothing of value in it would be my advice.

Police officer told me, after my vehicle was broken into.......keep it empty of valuables and leave the doors unlocked.

I wrap my entire truck with locking scissor wire . Never an issue . Only one key will unlock it . That key stays in my pack . Only option is if thief's have cutting discs. Too much effort / time .

Without their cell jammer so criminals can be better at what they do and jammers will block those cameras from taking pictures any camera from taking pictures

No more than 2 minutes with a cordless angle grinder and one could have your whole brush guard, cameras and fog lights

I don't leave anything in my truck. It's literally empty. I leave it unlocked and notes on my windows. "It's unlocked. I don't have anything valuable. The console and glovebox are empty." I've come back to my doors being open, but nothing else has happened.

Camera's aren't much help if the thieves are covering their face. I think you'd be better off buying the cheapest and most ugliest vehicle you can, don't leave anything of value in it and leave the doors unlocked when you get to the trailhead. Then if a thief does decide to get into the vehicle, there won't be any reason to break the window because the doors are unlocked and if there is nothing of value to steal, the thieves aren't going to hang around.
