The game is already 2d sprites and 3d enviroment, so there is not much change. What they could do is update the engine to Azure and give the same mechanics. Also i think Sky trilogy should be one game, many of the assets are the same. If remade, they should go with the latest 3d engine and go with the cold steel/reverie fight style.
Dope selections. Playing through Sky fc atm and i think even a re-release would be good. Game has aged well visually. That todd howard quote has me rolling.
I’ll be happy with either a Sky trilogy remaster collection or remakes done more in the newer titles engine like Cold Steel.. I know the latter will take longer however
I feel like a remake similar to the Super Mario RPG or Atelier Marie remakes would be much better than HD2D, considering the fact that the character sprites aren’t actually 2D but rather pre rendered. HD2D wouldn’t make any sense to me for that reason.
Well you know me I'll forever preach for the church of HD-2D. But let's be real. Falcom switched to 3D more than 10 years ago and invested a lot if time and ressources into their new 3D engine. So now they need to rentabilize that stuff. Anyway glad you had fun making this little collab :D
My only concern with the “HD-2D” remake is that it is a style used by Square Enix and not Falchom. At minimum they wouldn’t be able to use the term “HD-2D.” Unsure if there would be any copy right issues but even if they wasn’t Falchom would still need to develop their own in house tools to create HD-2D. I’d love to get this style of remake but I still have concerns over some of the development logistics.
I feel like the main cons are Falcom not having experience with HD-2D and the lack of a dub. Like honestly if we just got remasters with a dub I would already pop off, I love the Evo dub (Olivier especially) but I've always wanted to hear the Sky and Crossbell VAS from the Cold steel dub doing the lines from the character's original games too. But then again octopath, Triangle strategy and others do have dubs so maybe I'm off the mark here on one of the cons unless that's just the extra square money paying off.
HD-2D would totally work for a remake like this. It's the best of both worlds, have your cake and eat it too, so to speak. PS: Hope you are encountering tons of Caits in your Octopath playthrough!
I've encountered maybe 5 so far and defeated 2! They're quick to flee xD I've done my main groups chapter 2 quests. Cyrus, Therion, Ophilia, and Olberic. The last time I played I was in the desert area and found a side quest where a guy was controlling a giant snake, but I didn't have any sleep protection, so the fight was over pretty fast xD
A deep cut from 311. Wow! I never thought I would see that in a Trails video. xD I love the HD-2D style as much as the next guy, but Trails has its own identity. A simple remaster with Japanese voice acting and a few quality of life improvements for modern consoles (Switch, PS4, PS5) is all I'm asking for.
I'm a man of many surprises... just like our favorite spoony bard xD That's honestly all they really need. Full English voice acting if they want to spoil us (although it would be weird since Crossbell then would be the only arc without English voice acting xD)
yes! i totally agree. i dont want Trails in the Sky to go full 3D. the original had a certain charm that would be lost in that style. keep it like the original, but remake it with a modern engine
I wouldn't mind an HD-2D remake/remaster but I hope they add the additions that were added in the evolution versions such as the attack button in the overworld.
I'm in the 3D camp though that doesn't mean I didn't like the chibi style, it's just having a full on 3D remake of the Sky games in the style of Daybreak or even CS3-Reverie would be awesome. Seeing all the scenes and characters in full 3D would be so cool! Also, getting costumes for the characters would be great too. The biggest thing of why I'm in favor for a 3D remake is that it gives it a much higher chance of getting a full English Dub, well as much as recent Trails games get. I liked the Crossbell games but them not having an English Dub at all was a HUGE negative that took me out of the game a bit since I was thought, "Man, I wish I could hear Robbie Daymond voice this scene or Jonah Scott voice this funny Randy scene" etc so it bummed me out that wasn't the case, until Reverie. Funny enough, Reverie felt like THE Crossbell game(for their part of the game) for me due to hearing all the Crossbell characters in English Dub fully and I got to connect with them/enjoy them more thanks to that. Would love to hear Johnny Yong Bosch, Stephanie Sheh, Matthew Mercer, and everyone else voice their characters origin games fully and it would heightened the scenes a hell of a lot for me. Example, hearing the VA from the Sky SC come back to voice a certain wolf that is dire again after all these years and fully made the scenes his character's in a lot more enjoyable, not to mention everyone else voicing characters in Daybreak new and returning. Really sucks me into that game and I haven't even beaten it yet at the time of this post. Fingers crossed that Falcom goes the 3D route, maybe even go crazier and use Kai as a base cause they're that awesome lol
I really hate the idea of remaking a game and having the remake still be 2D . I'd rather they just remaster the games leaving the possibility for a proper 3d remake in the future
HD-2D is great for particularly old titles, but I feel like Trails in the Sky passed the threshold where its graphics would be a detriment; especially because its portraits are so good. For that reason, if you're going to remake it I feel it should get a tangible level of new dimensionality with character actions depicted in 3D or they might as well not bother with a remake. The existing game is good enough for the top down/isometric perspective.
I definitely agree with that statement, if they could just figure out the licensing stuff with Xseed (or heck, just pay Xseed to port them to modern consoles) I'd be more than happy with that. The graphics hold up well enough. I'd still like some of the QoL changes implemented though.
Thats a nice idea and all but Falcom would have to make their own 2d hd engine for the games and i don't see them doing that. I do hope they don't just make it full 3d and give it modern Kiseki combat, the Sky trilogy still has the best combat imo, definitely needs balancing though.
If you ask me, I really just need a better S break system, because the PC one doesn't work well for controlers. S breaks need to be able to be selected quick and easy, especially during certain fights in SC. Kevin, I need you! I just think Sky could work well if you made the gameplay more similar to Crossbell without sacrificing the old portraits. Estelle especially is peak in the old artstyle. She has so many great facial expressions. But yeah, Sky remastered in the Crossbell engine and with some tweaks to the dungeon design and an updated UI and that is literally all I need. And keep the old portraits. Joshua looks way better in the old artstyle! I kinda really dislike his hair do in Zero and Azure. He looks so wrong. And also Estelle. The Sky portraits were peak.
But trails is not pixelated. Honestly, would be a downgrade. its my first time playing trough the trail series, just finishing sky FC (Final chapter, 45 h in) and the style is beautifull. it looks great and from what I have seen from azure just more HD texture makes wonders.
HD-2D is good and I like it, but I don't think you are really describing that. What you are describing feels more like a remaster of the graphics. I wouldn't mind any of that if the plot is maintained as is without changes, and they only add QoL stuff that don't interfere directly with the story. Combat... I see your point on the balancing issues, but I hope if they change it, they respect how the old orbments work. I feel that's part of the plot itself.
Nah let Falcom do their own thing rather than just copy another dev.. Even SE is kinda overdoing it with that style.. Granted certain IPs it fits like a glove like let’s say Octopath & Triangle.. Stuff like DQ for example should be bright, colorful cel shaded in my humble opinion
At its most basic, HD2D is just 2D sprites in a 3D background, so the original Trails in the Sky could already be considered HD2D. If your dislike for HD2D comes from the exaggerated depth of field and the color tones used on Octopath Traveler, in my opinion those stylistic choices are not synonymous with HD2D, they're just the Octopath style.
