Interesting clip at the beginning of the video of the freight train passing. I noticed the passenger train had to wait. I am assuming the freight has priority. Does this happen often? What about when crossing Russia on the trans-siberian tracks? Our biggest disappointment crossing Canada on Via Rail's Canadian was the many delays to wait for freights to pass. Caused an 11 hour delay in arriving in Jasper. Would this happen on the Golden Eagle or Tsar's Gold private trains? What about Rossiya 1 and 2?

Since Ukraine closed railway space for RZhD trains in 2014, this is not possible. In 2016 they tried with trains Moscow-Varna and Moscow-Burgas through Serbia, but seems like at the end they didn't work out because they are currently not running.

Interesting video, RW/YW18 sleeping cars were made by VEB Ammendorf in the GDR from 1960s to 1995 for China, indeed are the same with Soviet and Mongolian sleeping cars, since China is an OSShD member they use the same rolling stock of the former Eastern Bloc. Once time during my trip from Mongolia to China and Hong Kong i asked to Chinese conductor about their rolling stock and he said that the older equipment were made initially in the USSR such as some lococmotives, while after some years Chinese start build themselves under license, from the GDR they bought many sleeping cars for international service to Soviet Union and Mongolia. While RW25G sleeping cars were made domestically in China by CRRC Sifang, aesthetically they very similar with Ammendorf, but are the same with XL18 luggage cars without the "Soviet style" ribs, while the Mongolian Railways RW25G have the ribs and the bogies are the Type 206G both in 1435 and 1520mm gauge the same with XL18 instead of the classic KWS-ZNII bogies on Ammendorf and YW18. While the 2M62MM is the Mongolian version of the double unit M62 and the built in Luhansk in the Ukrainian SSR, along North Korea, Mongolia is the one of mayor operators of this type of locomotive in Asia. As an enthusiast of the former USSR, Mongolia and China, Eastern Bloc in general, i very appreciate this video, good for a reference to make a 1/87 replica since i bought Roco 2M62 and Heris Chinese YW18 detailed scale models. Roco is an Austrian scale model train manufacturer, while Heris is a German company and they released Ammendorf cars of RZD and the Chinese YW18 in 1/87, which is very unique.

When they reach Mongolia, they switch the rail gauge correct? If I'm not mistaken, China uses the standard gauge while Mongolia (and Russia) uses a wider gauge for their railways.
@doc7austin
@doc7austin 10 лет назад
Yes, they do switch the rail gauge at the Chinese border station of Erlian/Erenhot. However, I was too stupid and missed it. During the stop in Erlian I left (like the other 80% of the passengers) the train and waited inside the railway station; shortly after the train left for the gauge change facility - without me. Too bad I dont speak Chinese, otherwise, the train conductors could have told me. The conductors speak no English or Russian, unfortunately.

@wkaemena

these are old cars and without AC . Therefor you can open the windows which is useful in summer. Amtrak trains have AC and no need for windows which open. On Superliner only the entrance door has a window for opening.
@morg52
@morg52 7 лет назад
Some people here in the US have private rail cars that they can couple on to the rear of AMTRAK trains. They can often be seen sitting or standing on the rear open platforms of these cars as they roll down the rails at speed. If it's so dangerous to allow those passengers in the common coach cars to be allowed to have open windows, why, other than wealth and privilege, are these folks allowed to take this risk on a publicly owned conveyance such as AMTRAK? By the way if you get caught opening the window on the door of an AMTRAK coach, you can be set off the train at the next station to be arrested by law enforcement.
