Train Derailment In Ohio! Close Look At Railroad Accident On Main Line, Steel Does Bend & Break!

Train Derailed In Sardinia, Ohio. Freight Cars Toppled Over & The Track Was Ripped Up On The Norfolk Southern Peavine Line. The train wreck was between Mount Orab and Sardinia, Ohio. This is a short line railroad in southeast Ohio near my home. Cincinnati Eastern Railroad had a heavy rock train running westbound when about 10 cars of the approximate 30 car train derailed at Corboy Road. This is a rural area off Rt32. The next crossing to the west is Bean Road. That is the crossing that I use to own 5 acres but sold the land when NS announced that the line was being closed. It was closed a few years after that but reopened close to a year later to access a grain elevator. Since then the line has opened all the way to the quarry just past Peebles.
The train that derailed is the same train that I filmed on Friday running empty to the quarry. This train was led by a GP15-1 and the SD40-2 pulling about 30 cars. I didn't count them but the television news reported it as being 30 cars. The same news that said the train was carrying about 390 tons of gravel. Where did they get that? Each car weighs about 31 tons empty and can carry up to 70 tons of gravel for a total weight of up to 100 tons per car. They aren't filled to the top but 390 wasn't even close.
I don't know what caused the accident. It is too early and the investigation has not been done yet. It happened about 3:45pm. I was filming trains near Cincinnati including an Indiana & Ohio grain train on the Brookville Sub that day when I started getting texts about it. Check out my video of the I&O train when I post it soon. The train hit a chair that someone put next to the crossing right by the police station in West Harrison, Indiana. That branch is very lightly used and has light pound rail dated 1917 that you will see in the video.
One other thing about the train derailment. The train was going very slow when this happened. It also had an EOT. Right now only the rock trains have an EOT but in the future most of the trains will have one.
Filmed Tuesday, April 4, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Up close this is much worse than I saw yesterday on Facebook. The ties look bad should have been replaced before hauling heavy loads of rock. Now the track and ties will need to be replaced. Some of the cars that have not derailed may in fact as they could tip over. Need to get a crane in there that is expensive. Think it will take more than a day or two to clear up and replace the track. Pretty expensive bill for the CCET but I;m sure they have insurance for such accidents. Hate to see this.

Sad day for CCET. Looks like the ties are in a poor state. If the track was relaid around the date of the rails they're almost 40 years old and have had a fairly long life for softwood! I would think the fastenings have given out due to the age and condition of the ties, and the weight of the cars has spread the road apart. A common cause of derails on old softwood ties! Easy to fix but expensive for the railroad as at least two of the hoppers look as though they could be twisted. It's a sad fact that unless you take out a tie here and there it is very difficult to estimate the condition of the road fully when inspecting it by eye. You have to realise just how much pressure such heavy cars put onto the outside rail on a curve. That train is about 30 cars at 100 tons each plus the two locos, and each vehicle puts stresses on the outer rail as it passes over. Between each set of axles the rail can move back then be stressed again by the next car. If there is any looseness in the fixings the spikes will start to move in the woodwork and soon the outer rail is loose and floating on the tie, which is how eventually the track spreads and wheelsets drop in the widened gauge. I have even seen similar derails on concrete track where the stresses have broken the fastenings. It's a common problem that is only prevented by a strict maintenance regime, which is often lacking on smaller cash strapped lines whose lower speeds appear to be the only reason it doesn't happen more often! I hope it's soon repaired and CCET can get on with the job of transportation of heavy freight keeping the country moving with minimum damage to the environment, which is the main reason why rail is the best way to transport bulk materials. Thanks for covering the derailment so quickly and so well. Your videos are an excellent documentation of the work of the railroads and also give us a glimpse of many other aspects of life around and about. I love to see the pets too and look forward to seeing more of the new goslings!

Well, they got a good ten years out of the last NS maintenance, I don't think JT ever caught any maintenance being done on this line. They were lucky to have gone as long as they had without any major derailments on this line. I agree with a few other comments on here, the ties look to have been deteriorated. It was good heavy ribbon rail, but like someone else said you have to keep those ties and ballast maintained. Thats one way to get new ballast along the tracks. Good rail, old ties. Have they called RJ corman in yet to clean up? best regards chuck
