Does the UK have a passengers' union or association!? Here I the US we have RPA and RUN. This seems like a great time to start a passengers' union that advocates for more and affordable rail travel.

Knew something like this would happen since the U-turn of scrapping ticket office staff. The government just don't get it - they commute by helicopter and see the working class as cattle that are only good for their votes every five years. We have to collectively stop this madness.

I can't understand how off-peak tickets are seen as 'complicated' in any way, but like you said this is almost certainly ideologically-driven. I'll email my MP of course but I hope there's other things we can do as well.

Petitions will just get a nothing response from the government that just recycles whatever they said in the first place. Like with ticket offices last year, public feedback and talking directly to MPs/politicians is the way to go.

ScotRail (who is also a government owned company) have removed peak tickets so that is a positive change. Given that we already have some of the most expensive fares in Europe (especially buying two flexible singles than a return). Think this might mean people would have to split tickets. In addition, (London) Kings Cross to Edinburgh is almost the same as London to Newcastle,

I'm honestly not a fan of this myself and I agree that this system would kill off train travel, Train travel is not for the rich person luxury method of train travel, this is PUBLIC Transport and should be made for the public and messing with fares like this will put a lot of people off train travel. I also did some research on this on the LNER Website for the 25th March (random date I picked to see how far you can do in advance) between London Kings Cross and Newcastle, travelling at half 8 in the morning and get into Newcastle for 11.27 cost £60 advance (no railcard) leave Newcastle at 19.02 and in London for 22.08 cost £28.90 (no Railcard) and these are prices for single advance tickets. Now if you want to use the 70 minute Flex ticket, travelling on the half 8 train will cost £80.00 (No Railcard) and that is NEARLY the price you paying for two advance singles to get you from London to Newcastle return.

It's already strongly suspected that someone high up in DfT owns First Group stock or may be connected to First Group. Otherwise how did Avanti get their contract renewed despite performing as bad if not worse than TPE who only recently went OLR.

A good point and well worth making. Personally I like how in Scotland the off-peak ticket price is now the anytime ticket price, also on trial but still no advance purchase needed, break of journey, etc still all valid. Railways and public transport should be a priority in regards to a well functioning society. Why must they make someone else money?

Thank you @JenOnTheMove for highlighting this. Great video. Depending on who people's local MPs are can I suggests a bit of variation in the responses we send them. If your MP is Labour/LibDem/Green maybe focus on impact on those on lower incomes who don't own cars + enivironmental consquences of making long train journeys less attractive vs driving or flying? If your MP is a Conservative maybe focus more on the curtailment of the inidividual's freedom to travel? Also, one think I read on a forum but isn't in your video is what the relationship is between this 70 mins "flex" tickets and the TOC's obligations to passengers under "Delay Repay" isn't this a way of getting them out of paying anything in many cases as after 70 mins delay the passenger's "flex" ticket will cease to be valid and they'll need a new, super pricey "Anytime" one? Keep up the good work.

I went to Australia recently and i was 2hrs outside of Melbourne and it was $10 for a 2hr train journey which was like £5 its a political choice if they can find £2.5 billion to fund a war they could reduce train fares but they wont

The peak fares are almost seemingly designed to put you off travelling on a whim. Personally I only ever buy advance fares for intercity journeys and I hope these aren’t dragged up with the lack of off peaks. The current government don’t want the railways to be developed and have no interest in modal shift, it’s all about cars for them (or a helicopter if you’re Rishi!)

Which is only going to kill off more and more of the UK that isn't London. Certain regions rely heavily on tourism and cheap rail tickets to get the tourists there, prime example is Wales.

It feels as though that the services just after and just before the peaks and some Saturdays are busier than peak journeys. Anyway, I currently buy off peak return tickets even if they are more expensive than two advances due to the flexibility it gives. It is similar to an insurance/guarrantee policy.

I am really shocked by this choice from LNER, this ticket is really restrictive in a way where people could so easily get ripped off or fined. It only takes the type of delays we have seen so frequently of late on the Great western mainline where the power is lost to the line due to broken wires/ track or like in Scotland or the HS1 tunnel where the track was flooded in a rain storm, Eurostar was unable to run anything that day! Even the ECML hasn't been great lately. Currently tickets are valid for a day and period returns for up to a month to return, the flex ticket could improve the uncertainty from specific services and make advance tickets fairer but it is no good if you can't pick what is basically a 2 hour slot to ride the train. What happens when people get delayed? Is it tough luck buy another ticket?! It shouldn't be replacing a flexible off peak ticket. What happens if a delay means missing a connection on an infrequent line like the Whitby or Heart of Wales line? I don't think this ticketing could work on commuter or metro services either. A trip I am doing soon is staying in Chester and exploring the North West/ Merseyside and into North Wales combining the coast and peaks rover (£60 for 4 days travel) with a normal super off peak period return from London to Tamworth (£22), I could easily have picked a specific train on the way there but would have no idea what time I would need on the way back until the day, so settled for the fixed but flexible off peak price. Removing this option is very backwards and would have made leisurely trips like mine far too difficult and expensive to bother. The fact the flex ticket is tied to advance tickets rather than a fixed price is pretty worrying too meaning there will almost certainly be loads of cases where people will be forced to pay that extortionate anytime fare. This is not making fares simpler, it is making more people pay insane prices. A simpler fare system would have a fixed flat rate per mile (distance based) with small differences to the amount based on route taken and class. There should be no TOC only tickets apart from special offers or advance fares. There would be no peak fares. Single fares need to be made exactly half of return, I still don't understand why returns disappeared on LNER tbh. And most importantly, the flexibility needs to stay as that was always the reason I take trains, without it I may as well go back to National Express or Megabus. A coach today to Newcastle from London was just £13 with NX, the anytime train fare single almost 10 times as much, if this stands, people will just drive or fly. It's almost like government won't invest in rail capacity so lets just price people off of it!

This will kill split-ticketing. Also I note that on the LNER website is says that "This new ticket type offers you a chance to change your ticket" - a chance to change the ticket - so no guarantee that it will be possible to take another train.

Will it kill split ticketing? you'll still be able to buy multiple tickets for a journey. To get around the pilot scheme for example if youre going london - newcastle, its possible to buy an off peak return london to york and another york to newcastle - as york doesnt have the pilot restrictions to anywhere. As long as the train stops at york, you're on the usual off peak restrictions. Granted it wont be quite as cheap as a straight up off peak though. Although once the trial is over, and if they roll it out the off peak tickets wont be available at all. Even if they do roll out on all routes nationally, there's still nothing stopping you breaking up the journey and buying multiple advance tickets as some of us often do.

Simplest solution is to ditch the UK privatization model and adopt the railway model from the continent, state run option on all routes to ensure availability, open access private operators can choose to operate on whatever route they think will be profitable for them which should create competition on some high demand routes. That's how Spain went from the most expensive to the cheapest high speed trains in Europe.

Hi just viewed your ticket video and yet again your content is brilliant and yes your right we all need to band together and make sure are mp s and councillors note that we do feel this pricing us out of our railway journeys and making us either drive to where we want to go or worst take a national express coach I have always loved rail travel and your videos give me some good ideas for when I travel Once again thank you and keep up the good work you do for us

LNER to London for us in Scotland, in Aberdeen it could drive the plane fares up and more people using the only flights direct to heathrow which are BA, or they go to gatwick or luton with Easyjet.

ScotRail owned by the Scottish Government recently removed peak fares, but then increased all fares by 8.7%. They give with one hand and take with the other hand. It’s got to the point living in Inverness, I hardly use the train at all now whether that’s going to Edinburgh, Glasgow or even Aberdeen. I’m using the coach services more (at least I’m guaranteed a seat and not sitting on a brand new 50 year old train or an inappropriate 2 carriage 158 class train where the heating hardly works in the winter and the air conditioning never works in the summer)

Its quite simple Jen; If the price is too high, I SIMPLE WON'T TRAVEL BY TRAIN; I got a Disabled railcard and enjoy travelling by train for a day somewhere (I live in Co Durham) But if its too costly I'll use my bus pass more often;; And I think the Government wants to destroy the railways;

This appeals to be the thin end of a very sinister wedge by the DFT / LNER. Taking away the flexibility for the fare paying passenger unless they can afford the prohibitively expensive anytime single fare will just put people off travelling by train. I suspect the treasury may have a hand in this, reduced demand for rail travel means reduced need to spend money on new trains and infrastructure upgrades

Partner and I are moving to London this year, if there are no cheap tickets left would be £378.60 EACH for an open return up to Preston. Last time we went (this was off peak and with a railcard was just over £60). As neither of us drive we’d have to resort back to the coach which leaves at the most inconvenient times and takes forever.

Removing any "Off Peak" ticket means removing off peak travellers. Removing off peak travellers means removing off peak trains. Removing off peak trains means removing staff. Off Peak travel used to be a number one issue towards the end of the British Rail era and it was the same at the outset of privatisation - they needed to fill the trains! LNER are way out of order; this appears to be yet another political disaster.

Travel by rail is finished in this country. Prices going through the roof. I travel in Europe a lot. Prices are much cheaper and service is way more efficient. Railway use is in decline following COVID. Strikes have proven that train services are unreliable.

The LNER has started its pilot scheme to simplify the complicated fare structure that a simple website or ticket machine cannot handle, only a ticket office clerk has the expertise to prevent you from paying through the nose. (The scheme started on the 5th Feb) You estimated that the fares from London to Newcastle will double, at present a single fare from London to Newcastle costs £140 a return trip will cost in total £280!!!! According to the LNER website, the prices will be determined by demand, surge pricing like Uber. The LNER financial report states that its profits are up 22/23 and the government subsidy LNER is down, the financial burden of the railways is increasingly shifted onto the consumer. I believe that the government will deem the pilot scheme a success and roll it out to all the Train Operating Companies. (TOCs). The fare structure will be so simplified that a stupid ticket machine or website will get the price right, thereby decreasing the need for ticket offices and saving money. I'd find it hard to travel to Newcastle as the cost is prohibitive. How many others are in the same situation? In comparison travelling by car, coach or even plane might prove cheaper? Though not environmentally friendly

Just a brilliant explanation of this Jen, well said and put. Because of where I am, we have 3 companies (Avanti, XC and Northern) charging essentially 2 prices between £5.80 and £11.80, normal class. So essentially to get to Manchester for me would be, if this rolls out nationally be either £11.60 or £23.60 based on double pricing. If anyone does set up a petition over this, i'll freely sign it and share it.

I quite like the idea of the 70 minute fare - for long trips like Scotland to London I wouldn't travel on an off peak ticket anyway since it would still be extortionate, the 70 minute one is a nice option as an advance ticket with a bit of flexibility. But this is not an excuse to scrap off peak fares, I can easily see how many people might rely on them - they should offer both options. Getting rid of off peak fares in the name of 'simplification' is definitely dodgy

Absolutely. It should be an additional ticket, not a replacement for OP. An advance ticket with flexibility for a bit extra money than a normal advance. Not ditching the middle priced, almost fully flexible ticket.

I travel for football once or twice a month from London. With tv companies moving games left, right and centre and train travel becoming more expensive I am looking for alternatives whether it is driving or even flying (London to Newcastle). It is becoming cheaper and simpler to do these alternative forms and I love the railway.

This will be a stupid new system and definitely not want there describing as simple. Fare enough anytime tickets which are supposed be half the price now if you are to buy an anytime single + anytime single with anytime return tickets being removed. But getting rid of off peak flexible tickets and replacing them with 70 minute flex tickets is stupid. I agree Jen this has to be stopped.

Spot on Jen, and I had already posted my feedback to LNER on Bluesky, stating what an absolute rip off it is. The Semi-Flex will be £20 above whatever the advance is at the time, meaning that will also rise and no guarantee of pricing - unlike off peak where you know what price it is, you can buy it on the day and you know you can effectively be spontaneous as you need to. Think also that passengers who use assistance / wheelchair users etc would lose out - the 70 min flexibility won't always be enough due to other access fails across the public transport network so forcing them to buy Anytime would be also unfair (and potentially disrciminatory.) Everyone needs to feed back ASAP and by the sound of it David Horne of LNER has been getting a right constructive kicking online in responses, basically stating this is a bad idea. Which it is.

You're right, this will drive people away from train travel. There was always going to be a massive hike once they changed their minds about closing ticket offices. It's a scandal. How the hell will anyone be able to afford it? Train fares in this country are already at eye-watering levels and unaffordable for many, if not most. We are the laughing stock of the rest of Europe (and they, by and large, have cheaper, better, modern and more comfortable railway infrastructures). The whole situation makes me very angry. Well done on highlighting this.

It is the same here in Connecticut outside of NYC. Fares are going up, and number of trains going down. It is faster and cheaper to drive. New York City itself is trying to push people to take the train by raising tolls. But, people are moving out instead.

Looked at taking myself, the missus and her sister to York (from Manchester) for the day on the train. Cheapest was £84. My car will use about half that amount of money in petrol.

Ideal Simplification: Ban operator specific tickets other then Advance fares, and maybe season tickets. This would end a lot of problems rather then going into this nightmarish system. The British Railways are going into another serious decline and we need to fix this. More examples near me(Comparing Off peak Day returns to 2x anytime singles): Norwich-Sheringham(My most routine route): Now: £10.50(Already steep compared to the £4 bus return) Then: £18.40. Norwich Cambridge: Now: £22.10 Then:£44 Norwich-London Liverpool Street: Now: £65.80 Then:£162 Norwich-Manchester Piccadilly: Now:£142.20(Off peak return [Within 1 month]) Then: £231.80 These fares are insane, just another half arsed money making technique by toc's and the government.

The LNER ticket is interesting , at present just to three stations plus London to those three stations. I understand you can buy OP returns say London to the Next non participating station maybe being cheaper overall, etc

The question 🙋‍♀️ is that am I likely to return back to do my train 🚊 travelling 🧭 🧳 in the southwest of England? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 This is because the train 🚊 ticket 🎫 🎟️ prices could see a double pay rise to happen to railway 🚃 customers when any of them use the regularly in most days or everyday. I honestly depend on this decision to myself if I’m returning back to do my train 🚊 travelling 🧳 🧭 again that I honestly live in north Devon in the southwest of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. If I’m travelling 🧳 🧭 on the trains 🚊 again is that I’ll be in two 2️⃣ counties are Devon and Cornwall is the limit it goes to because the railcard has these two 2️⃣ separate counties. If I’m travelling 🧭 🧳 the east of Exeter, it would be Axminster is the limit my distance goes to because it’s in Devon. If I go to Crewkerne in Somerset, I’ll have to pay 💰 the full price because the railcard is for Devon and Cornwall only. 👍

Thanks, Jen. Really useful video. I haven't used the trains for several years,for various reasons. However after watching this, I am having second thoughts. Slight double standards when I thought the move was to encourage travel by different modes not to deter people. May be I got it wrong(!)

I have done the sums........264km. aprox Manchester to London 368 (sterling) thats Aus$706.56 264km from my home gets you to the Manning River at Taree Train costs $43Aus economy $65Aus first class (UK 22.36-33.80) A difference of Uk 334.20 (Aus$641.66) at that cost Why Not Fly ? There's never enough money for lower prices, higher wages, better conditions, improved maintenance, but there's always money for executive raises and bonuses and the government is even worse in all regards, probably just wanting to pocket it all and give it away to contractors that won't even deliver any of the ordered product/services. OR: they intentionally make services inaccessible financially to a lot of people to justify cutting services so the automobile industry makes more money in the long run.

If this goes ahead, this will probably push me off the trains for good. Crosscountry is already unreliable as is and quite costly (Leading me to have to take GWR and be on a rammed 165 one or two stops down sometimes, praying i can connect at Bristol Parkway or Filton Abbey Wood) , so any cost increases may just push me to getting a car and driving to where i want to go, as i cant do where i live - Newport (Wales) on National express, even if that would be free (via discounts due to family), as its too inconvinent on timings and where i want to go, with a few changes needed.

Only simple coming out of this is people not using the trains. It's being discussed in Wales to do this as well. And Wales is run by Labour, who are cutting funding on public transport.

Different train company (EMR), but when I was in London last year I took the train to an event at Sywell Aerodrome. Research suggested St. Pancras to Wellingborough was a good way to get there. The ticket machine refused to sell me a round-trip ticket, and charged me £are-you-f**king-kidding for the trip. With nothing to lose I came back Northampton to Euston for a fraction of what the outbound trip cost me, even including the longer taxi ride. I had looked at renting a car for the day. It might actually have been cheaper.

People talk about how they'll use buses/coaches more, but of course all those will be full. How long do you think National Express etc. will take to realise they can also double their fares? You can't blame them really - most coach travel can be had ridiculously cheaply with just a little forward planning. I recently spent two weeks back in the UK travelling around by rail (I live in a European country with virtually no trains, so it was a real novelty). Most of the trains were quite crowded, even at off peak times, so I think the railways are a victim of their own success with FAR more customers than when I was last a regular traveler in the 1990s. Something has to be done to either improve network capacity (the forward looking option) or reduce usage (the negative, backward way). HINT - the first one! Something is fundamentally wrong if the revenue they currently get can't support the network. I think we know what that is. That country is SO backward!

The journey I regularly make (well, twice a year - Taunton to Middlesbrough and back) can’t be done on a coach as the coaches either don’t leave at reasonable hours (usually overnight with Megabus and Flixbus) - there was, on the day I went up, a National Express that left Taunton very close to lunchtime, but, for some reason, felt the need to go to Newcastle first (like going from London to Manchester via Carlisle) and not getting to Newcastle until around quarter to eight, then a three hour wait until nearly midnight for a service to Middlesbrough, finally arriving in Middlesbrough at nearly two in the morning - no option exists for coach travel on that route that doesn’t have you either travelling overnight or arriving at an ungodly hour - and it can’t be done on less than three coaches - so, for me, going on the coach is out of the question, as the Megabus goes from a place which is barely accessible by cross town buses in the daytime, if they left in the daytime, which they don’t, and no buses run after 6 pm and taxis ramp up the fares- and it’s at its most expensive at that time of night and too far to walk to! It’s train or nothing! My most recent journey (last Christmas), the journey up, nothing unusual happened, but coming back, the train that normally runs (for me) between Darlington and Taunton (the service from Aberdeen to Penzance) was ostensibly set to terminate at Bristol Temple Meads, as the track beyond there, according to reports, resembled a river - it rained non-stop all the way down - the train ended up terminating at Birmingham New Street - they initially set up rail replacement buses to take travellers onwards - but there were too many passengers and not enough buses, so they arranged taxis - yes - taxis - the one they got for me, I had to share with two blokes and it took us to Bristol Temple Meads - the longest journey I have ever made in a taxi - and it was free - one of the blokes persuaded the driver to pull off at Strensham services to go to the toilet - we eventually arrived at Temple Meads - I managed to get a train home - but the buses stop running after six, so the only alternative at 8:30 in the evening was a taxi - I usually get a taxi anyway- I should have arrived at about 5:15, had the trains ran properly!

100% agree with you, Jen. Without doubt this is a stealth move towards a massive rise in fares, a nudge from the Government to other less environmentally friendly modes and just a general pricing people out of long distance travel. Suggest a petition is created for this to be debated in parliament. It’s not only about the 1 in 10 people who buy super/ off peak tickets currently, it’s about having an affordable choice to do that if ever needed. If I was in Yorkshire for example and needed to go to London urgently due to family reasons I’m already charged a significant amount as you alluded to… but it’s easier to stomach than the anytime fare. It also takes away huge spontaneous plans away from people because of the lack of refund - how is that good for the economy? We need fewer barriers not additional ones. How is this good for passengers if it was carried through from this trial to other operators?

I travel on LNER once a week, and always seem to get a seat reservation. I have never once sat in my reserved seat. I usually end up getting on the wrong end of the train (split two unit azumas, you cant go from one "train" to the other) anyway, so its impossible. And all the red lights above the seats with noone sitting in them smacks of noone else is using their reserved seat either. only ONCE have i been asked by a passenger to move out of their seat - and there were multiple others to chose from, all reserved, all free. You don't need to sit in your reserved seat.

Looks like I'm gonna stop any thought of long distance train travel, and put off considering more local journeys. I haven't done any long-distance train travel recently, because only with the petrol prices at their peak a year ago, it was cheaper for me to drive myself. And adding a passenger, it ended up being half the price per person for me to drive. Not to mention, driving is easier with more than a single bag of luggage (I often end up taking instruments or model trains places, so the train is so awkward). Public transport is no longer "public" if the public cannot afford to use it.

This will hit those of us who are disabled. We are already under attack by this government & this will mean disabled people will not go out even though we get discounted rail fares of 33% which sounds a lot until you see the high prices we’ll be paying just to see friends & family. This has to be stopped & you need to write to your MP & make a noise otherwise they’ll be no railway left!
