Train Stalls On Hill & A 2nd Train Pushes It Up The Steep Grade! Loudest Locomotives Ever! 3 Engines On Front & 3 Sets Of Pusher Locomotives Or DPUs To Lift The Steel Monster Up The Steepest & Curviest Part Of The Line! Train passes train on the hill, this is the most awesome train ever! These trains are in Kentucky on the Norfolk Southern main line that runs from Cincinnati, Ohio to Chattanooga, Tennessee. I walked over a mile to get to the steepest and curviest part of the line so that I could film a train struggling on the grade. My radio was busy on 160.950 and I found out that a train coming up the hill had stalled due to the leading locomotive running out of water. The train had 3 locomotives on the point and one DPU fighting gravity to get 14,000 tons of freight up the hill! With the leading locomotive dead in the water the train tried a second time to get over the hill and then had to wait for another train to push it up.
This video starts with a train coming down the hill. That train was cool because it had a Union Pacific locomotive in the consist. After we see that train pass me we then get a look at the stalled train in the distance. The person in the video with the big stick who walks over the tracks after the first train passes is probably a local. I saw him walk by in both directions. The good action starts at about the 4:00 mark. The stalled train was train #123 and it had 4 locomotives with haz mats cars on the rear. The shoving train was train #375 and it had 3 locomotives with loads of steel rolls. When I said in the video that the train weighed 14,000 tons that did not include the addition of the second train!
Anyway, the action really starts when the train passes me and while it is going uphill another train passes it going downhill. Listen to how loud the DPU units were working as the train passed me. The lead unit was quiet because it was dead due to being out of water. The DPUs were the loudest that I have ever heard and the ground was shaking. Just look and listen to all that power going past me! Have you ever heard such power and if so, where at? I think this may just be the most awesome train video that I have ever filmed. The crews were talking on the radio about whether or not to stop a few miles up the line to refill the lead locomotive with water at Erlanger, Kentucky. As it turns out they did stop at Erlanger. Once they restarted the train at Erlanger, they separated the train back into the original two trains. I filmed both trains passing me just minutes apart farther down the line at Richwood and that will be in a future video. Just think of all the power it took to get this massive amount of freight over the hill. Just think of the fuel it took to make the energy to get this monster over the hill. I think its facinating to see how America moves her freight. I hope this video does justice in showing the battle that the railroad won in its effort to fight gravity. You probably had to be there for the full experience so leave a comment telling me what you think of this video and have you ever got to witness the railroads work this hard? Filmed between Ludlow and Crescent Springs, Kentucky on June 20, 2022
Thanks for watching! If you have time, please watch another video of mine to help keep my channel going. Videos include my pets and the slide shows.

A lot of that "noise" was air hissing as the loco's went by. Take notice of a few things. The RR's no longer use SAND for traction on hills. The drivers(wheels) on the locomotives are literally pounding themselves into the steel rail to get traction. All the locos on that train were "high ad" truck equipped. The locos were blowing AIR constantly onto the rails to get clean steel for adhesion. The pull on that hill was pure traction and horsepower. GREAT to see!

JT- This is probably the best video you've made. What a catch with 1 train shoving a disabled train up that steep hill. I remember riding up that hill on a passenger train when it was Southern Railroad from Ludlow to Somerset Ky.

My Grandfather worked for the L&N. He was a machinist at the roundhouse in Wilder, Ky. He lived on West 9th Street in Covington. Sometimes when I visited him he would say "Did you hear that?" It was the steam whistle signaling the Ludlow yards to send a pusher engine to help push the train up that hill.

That DPU answers a theory I had. Saw a train yesterday in Wyoming Ohio being pulled by a single loco and it was making the exact same sound that DPU was. I knew that thing must’ve been struggling considering the noises it was making and how long the train was, plus the inclusion of a DPU.

Wow, that DPU in the second train was just about thrashing itself to death! One heck of a grade to be taking 14,000 tons up. A great video with a bonus of a train in the opposite direction. Nice to see how Norfie is growing into a really good looking cat. She got lucky that day you came home and found her on the porch begging for food! She's got herself a good home and a real playmate in Chessie, what a lovely change in fortune for her.

Was at Hamlet NC back when the yard there was a busy hump yard. A freight came in from the west (Charlotte) and took one of the two Wye leads to go north into the yard. While doing so, there was a bang, train blew air and went into emergency... and about 1/2 way between me (on the platform for the station) and that track, there was a loud thud when the coupler came back to earth... One has to be REAL careful around overlong long trains that are heavily loaded...

What a train! Sure had a lot of horsepower pushing it up the hill. They were sure spooling up those superchargers on those locos. Kind of like with the river tow videos I follow. When the Mississippi is running high and fast and the boat is heading upstream, they will need several towboats to push the tow uphill. Great video. You should get a medal for going "above and beyond the call of duty" in the heat to get to these remote spots a long way from the truck. Fun episode of the "Chessie and Norfie Show." Stay cool and hydrated.

Pretty sure it was two trains that got connected together: the first train had the lead locomotives and the first DPU; the next DPUs were originally the lead locomotives of the second train, and then finally the one on the end, which I think JT mentioned in the video had been added at the bottom of the hill.
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 2 года назад
The second train was probably between 8,000 and 9,000 feet long. To be 14,000 feet long the cars would have to average over 105 feet long each. The longest standard car is right at 94 feet long. So the 14,000 mentioned was the weight of the train in tons.

Love the uphill battle. Never heard any locos groaning and straining in pain like those DPU's! LOL Love the black cat Norfie, we have a new 6-week old ginger kitten {orange/white} tabby that we named "Chessie Marie Ohio". (8^]}, she has 2 brothers and a sister, but her sister is snow white with green eyes, named her "Thundersnow Emerald Starmist". All our cats {now 17 of them} all have a minimum of 2 names, but most have 3. ROFL And they love to watch my model trains too, both O and G gauge. Considering installing a G gauge ceiling layout all through my house. If I do it, it'll cover every room in the house! Still working out the plans for it, be a double tracked layout too. Again, awesome video. Since I can't get trackside any more, your, and other train videographers I've subscribed to at least bring the trains to me. And I love watching them on our 55" UHD Smart TV. It's almost as good as being there in person! Give Norfie and Chessie a pat or two from me. They are both so adorable. :)

Very cool. Seems like the 3rd unit on the front end was the offline. Really rare to hear an AC44C6M screaming it’s fans that loud. It probably needed water after that push! Nice catch on a dual lashed train.
