Train to pull - not "pullup"! (unless you just love pullups, then by all means train for that too!) I sometimes get asked about why bodyweight exercises use different variations and progressions when we could simply use bands or machine assistance instead. The simple answer is - you can! An argument can be made that machine assistance is more skill-specific, which theoretically should get you better at that specific skill. However, we sometimes get lost in exercises rather than the intended function of exercises. For example, the goal of pushups, pullups, etc isn't just to do more reps - it's usually to increase our quality of life and overall fitness ability! (with some exception, like athletes, bodybuilders, etc) So it benefits us to train different skills, different angles, different techniques etc... even if they don't necessarily get us better at a *specific* skill. Plus all good progressions are worthy movements themselves. A horizontal pullup isn't "lesser" than a vertical pullup! If this confuses you - don't worry! Just do whatever you like - both progressions and assistance can get you where you need to be! You can even do both, if you want. (Keep in mind that machines and bands don't mimic the goal exercise perfectly either. It's not necessarily bad, but just something to remember.) Have a wonderful day!

You are right ! This old lady , 70 , still trains everyday , now I see that all the work I did for years has prepared me for this stage … now can’t do pull ups .. nor really great push ups but my arms are strong & I can continue to pull my weight ! so it’s not all about perfect form but conserving the strength to pull as we age . Thank you for yr smart & logical presentation 🥰🥰🥰

I accidentally trained to do a pull up by hauling around ladders at Lowe's where I work on the merchandising team. I'm pulling around ladders, pulling heavy topstock, and suddenly one day, I could do a pull up. It was surreal, I'm telling you. Edit: just a reminder, I was born female, and that comes with specific challenges, one of those being pull ups. We normally can't do them nowadays. I've never been able to do even one - literally not one ever, not even once - until a couple of months ago, and I'm in my 40s. For all you ladies out there, and everyone else struggling to get there, if you pull something heavy around every day, you'll get that pull up!

Brooo that's how I learned deadlifts. While studying I generally stayed away from deadlifts because I couldn't get the form down. While working one day I was lifting boxes and I got the movement down on how to lift properly.... went and tried it on the DL and I finally did it without pain

Now I’m 30 pounds of muscle heavier and they look at me and say I’m jacked now, but now the roles have changed and I feel like I don’t look much different but everyone says I do.

I remember how in elementary, I used to love the bars and climbing up absolutely everything 😭 I got blisters every month, which hurt. But I still went on the bars when I could. I grew extremely self conscious of trying to stay "normal" and started to think that by a certain age, I shouldn't go on the bars anymore 'like a kid' To realize how much bs that was now. I was really active, and I still like to take part in some sports.

So my thing with pull ups, is that you should be able to pull yourself up and on/over something in an emergency. Just like you should be able to pick up something heavy or run for a decent distance. If you can't do some of these things, it just puts you in the category of less prepared individuals. That's fine if you are willing to be in that group. I personally try to be prepared in other areas, and therefore I see no reason not to make fitness another one.
