Hey guys! Welcome FINALLY back to another train trip video! Today, I'm traveling on Amtrak's Pennsylvanian route from New York City to Pittsburgh! The Pennsylvanian is a 9+ hours journey down the state of New Jersey and across the entire state of Pennsylvania crossing 444 miles in total. The first part takes you down from NYC to Philadelphia on their NE Corridor Line, followed by the Keystone Service Line from Philadelphia to Harrisburg, and finally the Pittsburgh Line from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh on Norfolk Southern's tracks. This last part is by far the most scenic part of the Pennsylvanian and also the longest and most delay-prone section (to say it lightly). Throughout most of the country, Amtrak uses freight company tracks from NS to CSX to Union Pacific to BNSF, so they always give priority to their trains first. Because of that, we unfortunately were delayed over an hour due to slow moving NS trains ahead of us and so on and so forth. Besides the delay, I found the rest of the train journey to be very good. The cabin, while older, is very classy with very comfortable seats and power outlets. There's also free WiFi and the attendants were all chill, even the one that asked to not be shown on camera. Speaking of which, the cafe car didn't allow passengers to use its tables which does kind of ruin the experience a bit. But overall, had a great time. Hope you guys enjoy!!

I seem to be getting a lot of questions about the maps I used in this video... It's just the regular Maps app on any iPhone. Just click transit on the top. 👍🏻

Quick question, how did you get the app to tell you what track you were leaving on? The signs at the new Penn Station in NYC are almost never working and I've missed 2 of my Pennsylvanians due to this..

I got tears in my eyes seeing that "old caboose" at the end of the video. That belonged to the late and great Jerry Joe Jacobson who owned the Ohio Central System..he used to take that passenger car all over the place..tied on to the end of Amtrak trains. I worked for him and he was one of the greatest human being I have ever known. Nice job on the video.

I've been to the horseshoe curve a few times myself. It's one of my favorite railroad locations in the United States. One time I saw one of the Norfolk Southern heritage units in charge of an eastbound crude oil train. It was an ES44AC unit in the green and white Southern paint scheme. I'll never forget that day. And one time during the winter, I've been to the Gallitzin tunnel, west of the horseshoe curve. It was great. You know, I've always have this desire to go onboard Amtrak.

Hey Chris. Just wanted to say I rode this train in December of last year with my wife on our vacation. I watched your video to get an idea of what to expect and it helped me have a great ride as if I'd done it many times before. I just wanted to say thank you for providing this. I really enjoyed the experience of the ride myself and highly recommend it to anyone looking to get to points along that stop. I actually came back to watch this because I miss the feeling of being on the trip! Thanks again!

Enjoyed your video immensely. Thanks for sharing your journey with others. I live in South Central PA and worked in Harrisburg for 23 years, so I appreciated that portion of the journey. I have been watching a lot of train videos, taken from the driver's cab perspective, in Switzerland and The Netherlands. They do seem far advanced than what we have here in the US and the Swiss Alps are hard to beat for scenery. I guess they have been at it far longer and put more money into their rail infrastructure. Of course, they also collect a lot of taxes to pay for it. Thanks again!

I live in Lancaster. The train station here is the 2nd busiest in the state behind 30th Street in Philadelphia. And for another bit of trivia, the Harrisburg airport used to be the sight of an Air Force base. I think I remember my dad saying that it was one of a few airports where the Concorde could land in an emergency on the east coast because of the length and depth of one of the runways. It took a lot of runway to land something like the Concorde. Peter's Mountain was in my dad's backyard when he was a kid. It would be really cool to see the observation deck in Toon town (as the locals call it). There's a live stream of it if anyone wants to watch. I really like this video!

Note to viewers: if you're wondering about the Ardmore and Paoli stations on this route, they're stops on the Paoli Local operated by SEPTA (Southeast PA Transit Authority) that run through what we ex-Philly suburban dwellers call the Main Line. The Main Line is Old Philly Money, whose residents live in old stone mansions that probably date back to the 18th century. How do I know? Two reasons: 1. My family used to live on the Main Line back during the mid-to-late 60s in Wynnewood; and 2. If you recall the movie "Trading Places" (1983), which starred Dan Ackroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ian Holm, one of these Old Money homes was occupied by the commodities brokers played by Bellamy and Ameche somewhere on the Main Line. Another point about Ardmore: It's close to very expensive colleges like Haverford College, Bryn Mawr (pronounced "Brin Moor"--one of the Seven Sisters of expensive women's schools), and Villanova U. Closer to Philly's 30th Station, other famous schools include UPenn, Drexel U, Temple U, and St. Joseph's (in Bala Cynwyd (pronounced "bahlah kinwood)). Next to last, the narrator didn't tell viewers about those houses on the Schuylkill (pronounced "skuel kil") River, as the train passed by them towards 30th Street Station, so I will: those buildings are the famous Philly university boathouses where rowboat crews maintain their shells. Each Philly university competing in rowing owns one of these houses. At nighttime, the houses are lit up and viewers can see the houses' outlines as they're reflected on the river's surface. In addition, one of the last sights just before the train passed Boathouse Row that the narrator didn't show viewers was the Philadelphia Zoo, one of the country's oldest. Lastly, if viewers enjoy watching horse shows, Devon is close to the terminus of the Paoli Local at Paoli (pronounced "Pay oh lee), and Devon is the locale for its famous horse show.

I took this very train from Pittsburgh to Philly last year. As a European, let me tell you that I enjoyed it. Those giant white seats were awesome, and much better than anything I'd seen from our side of the pond, 1st class included. The only drawback is...it's pretty slow. I mean, a cost efficient measure would be to put another daily PGH -> NYC which would only stop at Harrisburg and Philly. I mean, there were way too many, mostly useless stops (saw nobody getting in or out between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg) . But still, I'd do it again. And since it cost me only 50 usd, with tons of luggage storage capacity, I'd do it again. Options from Pittsburgh to the east coast are very limited, and flights usually very pricey. The only other alternative is the Greyhound...no thanks.

There are efforts underway (for the past few years) to get a second NY-Pittsburgh train. Chief issue is negotiating track space from Norfolk Southern. You may have noticed on your trip that the station platforms are almost all on the westbound tracks. Eastbound _Pennsylvanians_ have to use the westbound track to make station stops, literally ploughing aside westbound freights. You can imagine how vexing this is for NS...
@that90skid72
@that90skid72 3 года назад
@@RailRide I totally understand, but this westbound platform issue shouldn't be such a great deal at Harrisburg and Philly. But then you're right regarding NS, they own the tracks so they basically do whatever they fancy. Any negotiation with them won't be an easy task.
@that90skid72
@that90skid72 3 года назад
@@RailRide My main point was, how about creating an extra daily train from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg to Philly non stop.That would save tons of time. But then again it ultimately comes down to NS' willingness...

You get unlucky or lucky on this train. On the first two legs of the trip - the NE corridor and the Keystone service, Amtrak owns the tracks and you get up to speeds of 125 mph for certain periods of the trip. You cover over half the trip in just a few hours. The problems start on the freight tracks where the max speed is 70 mph and that is only for small stretches. On top of that, freight trains are a frequent delay. When I took this train right before the pandemic the outbound train from NY was on time due to no delays from any freight trains. We had only one delay coming back from Pitt that lasted 15 minutes which the train made up and we arrived in NYC only 5 min late. So you can get lucky. The wi-fi is spotty so don't count on it.

As great as flying can be, I love riding the train, and I really hope to see further expansions of short-to-medium haul routes from Amtrak, Brightline, and others real soon! You should definitely come out west and ride the Pacific Surfliner between to/from LA and time a ride around sunset. Also, two of the Michigan lines (Wolverine and Blue Water) operate on the largest stretch of Amtrak-owned tracks outside of the Northeast Corridor, so you can always take that from Chicago to/from Ann Arbor, Lansing, Dearborn, Detroit, etc. Edit: I will also say these trains, given their length in travel, aren't really meant for those traveling between NYC and Pittsburgh but meant more for those living along the route where this is their only mode of public transportation. While some of these cities may have a small regional airport (i.e. Harrisburg), direct flights to NYC or Philly might be costly (unless you connect there) and without a car, these rail services are the only way to get to/from their towns.
@supersaturn956
@supersaturn956 3 года назад
Disagree with the second half. Modes of transportation are a bit a personal preference. You can literally drive, take a bus, or train anywhere in the US. As an aviation enthusiast you might like flying shorter distances or using regional airports, but not everyone shares this belief. Some people hate flying or have a fear of flying, or prefer to mix the transportation modes up especially with Pittsburgh and New York which are not incredibly far from one another.

Gotta disagree with the "depressing" comment. I grew up visiting Penn Station on occasion and always found it exciting and interesting. Call me crazy, but I also thought there was charm in those 1970's graffiti-scrawled subway trains. As a kid, I wanted THAT for a train set, graffiti and all! I thought they were so cool! Trains like all machines need maintenance and these are time sensitive jobs. I've been from Northern Quebec, NY, DC area and even down to Mobile AL hauling wheels for CSX from Cumberland MD. I delivered to 30th St station in Philly from Albany NY area. I've also delivered aircraft engine parts, nuclear power station parts, military parts. I have a very interesting job because I get to see how various industries function. This is my 36th year doing this type of work. The pandemic never stopped us from our service. According to what you wrote about train traveling and by the songs you play, I'm quite sure you should have been born earlier in time kiddo! Nice video, thanks for sharing!

Nice video. It brings back memories for me. I suggest you ride the California Zephyr and the Texas Eagle to LA when you get a chance. The Empire Builder is also a great ride! I’ve ridden all of the routes, including the Auto Train over the years. You see the real America from the train. Thanks.

After seeing so many of your train trips - what do you do when you get there lol? You can't be visiting people in so many places. Do a lot of trips end in the middle of nowhere and you have to get back somehow? Love the videos, thumbs up 👍👍👍

One intersting aspect of Horseshoe Curve on approach is, as you look across the valley you see a small notch way up in the opposite hillside that looks like a road that must be above the tracks. it's not till you lean into the actual Horseshoe Curve that you realize that notch is _where the tracks you are traveling on_ are going. By the time you wind around the opposite side of the hillside, your altitude is greater than of the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

Nice, I love taking Amtrak. I recommend to take the overnight sleeper cart at least once in a lifetime. My most memorable trips have been in no particular order: DC to Atlanta DC to New Orleans DC to Boston DC to Chicago

I take a sleeper car *every* time, even for non-overnight trips -- and I have the bed put down the whole time. It's simple the most comfortable way to travel and I'd take 10 hours lying in bed over 90 minutes crammed into an airplane any day.

You should take the Cardinal from New York to Chicago. It is a beautiful ride!

Awesome video, and a nice overview of what to expect when I ride the Pennsylvanian in a couple of weeks. This may be an ignorant question, but, if you are sitting on the right side of the train between NY and Philly, that will become the left side of the train when leaving Philly towards Pittsburgh, correct? Or, in other words, if I am looking directly at the platform in Trenton from my window, that same window seat will allow me to see across the valley when rounding Horseshoe Curve? Or is that an incorrect assumption.

Great video from a railfan outside of Philly. NJT doesn't go through to 30th street on the NE corridor. They have the Atlantic City line that begins/ends there though.

They need to get some airline flight attendants to show them how to make announcements that don't threaten or challenge the passengers.
