I was eager to hear your take on the Horse Stance-and as always, you did not disappoint. I've been easing into it in my own practice, and have watched numerous videos. But I have never (and maybe I'm watching the wrong people) seen anyone address introducing weights into the equation. But makes total sense. Thanks as always!

When I delivered furniture, we picked up all kinds of things this way. We would also pick up sofas like this, vertically and then slide it up onto our shoulder and walk it from the truck to the front door, sleeper sofas and recliner sofas as well.

always interesting. in the style that I practice. Okinawan Go Ju Ryu we don't have horse stance but we do have Shi KO dachi. The differences are that the feet splay out in alignment with the thigh or knee hinge. wherever they naturally fall. This reduces twisting strain on the knees. The back configuration is different too; when down in the stance the back is allowed to form it's natural S shape but the torso is vertical. When we stand up we tuck the tailbone as in many activities, KB swinging for eg. The backwards tilting of the pelvis in the down position facilitates the opening of the legs while not allowing the knees to fall inwards. Understanding the dynamics of the two vertical spine conditions. S curved and straight has been a significant milestone in my training. We do do isometric holds in the down position for strength and also squatting up and down for mobility in this stance Different styles, different emphasies.....
@MarkWildman
@MarkWildman Год назад
I’ve noticed over the years that Japanese practitioners get round as they age, and Chinese styles tend to stay thin. I think this and the different breathing emphasises are why that difference happens
@blackbird-25
@blackbird-25 Год назад
@@MarkWildman interesting observation. I would say that go ju Ryu training does tend to develop and old school barrel type strong body as opposed to a V shaped body. It's possible that the long term effect of diaphragmatic breathing in Sanchin kata particularly might contribute to this as well.

I understand your point Mark and yet, based on my personal experience, having practiced Karate for many years, every time i had to stand in the horse stance (kiba dachi) my knees and especially my ankles hurt a ton. When i was in shiko dachi though (with the feet turned outward to about 45 degrees) i felt no tension in either the knees or the ankles and it was much more comfortable. I just wanted to express my personal opinion here: correct though your instructions may be (and they surely are), i just think that the "feet-pointing-straight-ahead" approach might not be right for everyone. I see that myself when i perform kettlebell swings: they are much smoother when my feet are ever so slightly turned outward than when i strive to keep them straight. Same goes for knees. What's the thinking Mark?

I just tore my rotator cuff in a fall. I’m going to do this horse stance static and with body weight. Mark, any recommendations for training with one good arm?
@BigBoaby-sg1yo
@BigBoaby-sg1yo 7 месяцев назад
Do it with say a 3kg dumbbell in your good arm and a 1kg in your injured arm - once 1kg yields no pain ,up the dumbbell to 2kg ,then 3 kg . Don’t expect fast results as I’ve done the exact same myself , but it will come if you are patient. What took my healing on leaps and bounds was ( something I was against ) cortisone injections x2 . If I have been overtraining, my damaged shoulder lets me know about it - just let the inflammation calm down then start off light . You will get there ,but be patient.

would the kibadachi/horse stance translate into a sumo deadlift when done with weights (KB, barbell)?
@amuroGenki
@amuroGenki Год назад
Don't want to nitpick, but kibadachi is not your "sumo stance". Because kibadachi/mabu/horse stance is about parallel feet, tailbone tucked, it's purpose is rather on the side (left or right). Sumo stance (shiko-dachi, don't know chinese name) has open feet, anterior pelvic tilt, and is made to do sumo stuffs :-) (push, pull, resist). My advice is to train both. Mabu is better for leg and core conditionning, Sumo stance enables lower stances, and thus translate to even better mobility.
@JosephAlanOliveros
@JosephAlanOliveros Год назад
@@amuroGenki that's perfectly OK and i do understand the placement/position of the feet. i go to kibadachi by default when doing wide open stances (even when I'm doing yoga). guess I've done sumo deadlift the wrong way then and thanks for pointing out the little details. little detail counts when it comes to these types of things to prevent injuries. cheers!

@stevenscott2136 Год назад
More civilized than it used to be. Old male skeletons from the pre-agriculture days USUALLY had marks on them indicating weapon-induced injury. So fully half of men had gotten bone damage from club, spear, etc at some point in their lives. Plus an unknowable number of non-bone injuries, since belly stabs and assorted slashes don't mark the bones.
