Yes! Viv dropping some nutrition knowledge bombs!! As the resident non-runner (avid cyclist) this sage advice is absolutely transferrable across endurance sports. Over the years I have developed my "rules" for riding and eating. If I am out for a 2/3/4/5/6 hour ride, I have my nutrition and hydration totally preplanned. My approach is that along with the idea that I 'have' to cover the time and distance, I also 'must' consume my prescribed nutrition along they way. As the distance and time increases, so does the importance of the calories. For me, the other variable that it took time for me to master was the pre-ride nutrition. Unfortunately for me, my absolute favorite time to rolling is before sunrise, that means that if I cannot consume a lot of calories before the ride then I have to start consume the calories earlier in my workout. Thanks for the continued awesome content!

You’re so right! Calories are calories and all calories burned have to be replaced across whatever endurance sport you take part in. I like that your nutrition is part of your prescribed training plan. I think people are starting to catch onto the fact that bonking doesn’t have to be a thing if you consistently eat.

Always entertaining. Love the young enthusiasm. I have my 1st 50k ultra @59 in 2 weeks and today I did a 3h20m trail run about 31km. I've been practicing on my easy runs to breath through the nose. Today taking 1 gel every 9k and a protein bar every 1hr i could eat and run because I could breath through my nose. Gets harder if your panting.

I run on very similar trails as the ones in this video - rugged desert trails (El Paso - Franklin Mts). I am amazed that you can eat while running - so help me, after years of trying I cannot even drink water while running. I have to stop. My calories of choice are just sucking on lemon drops and other hard candies. For longer runs, I have tried the gels, bars, etc ... but in the end I decided to just pack normal leftovers in my pack. Sure they take up more room, but I will never forget the look on my friends' faces when I started eating leftover spaghetti and meatballs 20 km into a run. LOLOLOL beats gels any day. Thank you for the video.

That’s hilarious!! I love that you bring leftovers. For my longer days on trail I bring more solid stuff but I stick with gels for race day. Your lucky to be out near the Franklin Mts. Those are some epic trails!! I imagine you’ve tried drinking out of the soft flasks. If you haven’t and drink out of hard bottles, the soft flasks make a big difference because air doesn’t get in there with the water. You can suck it down at your own pace instead of squirting the water into your mouth, which takes too much coordination for my liking.

thanks for the tips. I suggest you take pasta in a small tupperware, and eat it along the way. Viv, you need to show up to the javelina jundred in that queen outfit.

I was totally planning on it this year but it didn’t work out with commentating. I thought that’d be over the top…😂

High cal gang! Great video!! I think of being able to stomach more calories in the same way I think of getting speedier. It’s something to practice and work towards. In my mind, 400 calories/hour is the holy grail. If I can make that work, I should be able to run pretty darn well. I’ve gotten really into Roctane lately. It tastes super light and I can easily take in 180+ calories/hour from that. Add in a gel every 45 minutes and I’m averaging 300 per hour. It’s a lot easier than trying to stomach a gel every 20 minutes, which I’ve done in the past.

Yes the Roctane route is super efficient. My running buddy relies on that and can pack in so many extra calories with that stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Being a slower runner with a strong stomach, I giggle at the "nothing new on race day" while wolfing down vegan chili topped Mac n cheese, or bean and cheese quesadillas. Great aid stations are something I look for in races, and I'm sure to try ALL the foods. I'm guessing that as I (hopefully) get faster, the higher intensity might not allow me to digest such heavy foods. 😭 I did have to train for it though, and had a few issues... the chicken parm gave me heartburn, and the spicy Mexican tuna casserole had me heaving in the neighbors shrubbery. 😆

This is so freaking hilarious. When I started I ran purely for aid station food. My favorite was the cheesecake bites they had one year out at Brazos Bend. It was the best... maybe not for my stomach but mentally I was all about it.
