I recently got an 11 year old pitty boy red nose from the shelter. He is basically a good dog but very nervous boy. I'm trying to build in him some confidence and discipline to help him.... same way maybe the military builds all that. Treats won't help with this even though he likes treats.I am trying to be strong and firm with him. I know not everyone can be like that with a big or strong dog. He, and I believe most dogs understand things if messages from humans are clear to them....... I NEVER HIT OR HURT HIM. But for example, when he crowds me while fixing his food, I take his collar and walk/pull him over to his PLACE..... NO WORDS.... He stayed after 3 repeats. THEY NEEDS FIRMNESS AND GUIDENCE from a leader......not always easy

Same here :-) This exercise sounds great and I will try it and I do similar things (from high energy tuck play to place/stay), but from my experience with my high drive border collie, it alone won't change it. The reason is, that in my view, a high-drive border collie knows the difference between training and real life, so they will easily regulate themselves in training, but in real life with lots of stimulation that doesn't mean they can/want to regulate. What has helped me most are for example Tylor Muto's impulse control exercises at the doors (I forgot the name he uses for it), where the dog has to learn that he gets access to resources only when I allow it. Along those lines, teaching the dog that it will not get what it wants as long as he is in an aroused state. Also Michael Ellis's approach of building high engagement so that I am more interesting and can redirect the dog has helped me immensely and basically making sure that the dog does not react to everything in its environment and instead focusses the high energy it has on me and on productive things like heelwork etc. But altogether not to expose the dog to too stimulating environments while making sure he or she gets sufficient mental and physical exercises.
