I have a reactive miniature poodle dog. He is 3 years old and not neutered. He is very smart and adaptable. However, when guests come to the house, he barks a lot, or when someone leaves the room, he jumps on them, sticks to their clothes, and tries to stop them. He only does this when I am in the room. Besides, he does not act like this towards other people or dogs on the street. I have done a lot of reading and watched videos. What most of them suggest seems to be punishment-focused, correcting with a leash seemed a bit logical, but it didn't work for us, he became even more stressed. I try to attract his attention with a reward as soon as he does this behavior, but he doesn't focus on me. Normally, he always looks into my eyes. How can I solve this problem?.

So we got a rescue that was a bait dog in a dog fighting ring and he's very sweet to me. Is afraid of men some. So he's always been "my dog". He is great with commands during "training time" and behaves better and better around my husband. Little kids are a different story. My nephew's little boy comes over for weekends and we have to keep the gated away from each other. Bravo knows his place and minds very well but after he goes home, Bravo tends to act out and growl at my husband for no reason and guard me. I think I am a dog mommy more than the leader I need to be. Must learn this. TY for putting it in terms I totally understood.

man..... this is really good types of discussions to have, learning how to READ dogs is so HUGE, to me , it is the very first thing you should do meeting or seeing a dog the first or few times. With that knowledge, you/we can figure out how to ADDRESS a dog based on what they are telling you....... most reactive type behaviors come from fear, them not knowing and unsure about someone or something........... how to help that is THE BIG QUESTION,.... thankyou

Wow, I really need your advice but I see this video is two years old, I rescued a one year old Shih Tzu very insecure. I keep her on a leash because I have four cats. She is doing excellent with the cats. However, I live in a condo and I made the mistake of letting the dog sleep in the bed, I don’t know if she’s guarding me or the bed, but she constantly barks when the cats come near the bed and which the cats used to sleep in the bed now if I take away the bed and have her start sleeping in the kitchen she will bark excessively and I can’t have that in a condominiumshe does very well if I leave for a few hours but not if she knows I’m home. Any advice would be so terrific. I am really in a bind, and I would really like the cats to sleep in the bed.

boy, was this a wakeup call. I am EXACTLY what he describes - a doormat! Not just for my foster dog, but also other people in my life. This is the BEST video I've seen and really shows that I need to take control of my LIFE, rather than my life controlling me ESPECIALLY the foster dog who definitely (through no fault of her own) is treating me like a doormat and I'm unknowingly ENCOURAGING her to do that. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU TYLER!!!!!! Time to set personal boundaries with her AND other people in my life.

My 7-month-old Siberian Husky/Pit Bull/Doberman mix puppy is still whining in the crate. She's not afraid of it, and sleeps in it just fine. I never go to her while she's whining...but when it gets within an hour or two of when she's supposed to be let out I think she gets anxious or excited. I understand she's young and maybe still needs some maturation for self-control, but it really bothers me. Any ideas? I make sure she has something to chew on. If she starts before I'm supposed to get her, I wait for a good few seconds' break in it before I even start walking towards the crate, but it doesn't seem to be helping much.
@lisafoster4468
@lisafoster4468 5 месяцев назад
Also, the crate is appropriately large for her adult size.
@ConsiderTheDog
@ConsiderTheDog 5 месяцев назад
It sounds like you are doing a lot of the right stuff already. Just make sure she is also getting enough exercise and mental stimulation in general and especially prior to being crated so the crate gets associated with rest. Stay consistent and give it time. Also, some dogs can just be more vocal than others especially when they anticipate excitement.

That is such great advice - that if you feel a bit uncertain about whether to intervene or not - better one time too many than too few. That is great comfort to know, when you (as I) feel that you are still learning.

Yes that certainly is possible. My time with him was very limited so it is hard to say. He had been in his kennel for a few hours prior to coming out so definitely could be that he was just thirsty. The trainers who were working with him daily would have more insight. I was only there to assist with socialization sessions.

8:18 look at her tail and her demeanor bro, you can't even read a dog , wrong time to try and pet her or put your hand above her head and 5:09 she yielded to you, you don't start pulling the leash then, you let her know good job even a treat would have been perfect then, you're basically confusing the dog. worst trainer i seen by far.

WHAT!? Thats a lot of projection. Dogs don't think like that! I think you said her name was Jennifer, if she does what you're explaining the dog will still see her has not being able to handle the issue. Also, depending on if the dog is reacting do to insecurity, nervousness or anxiousness would dictate how she handles it.

This is super helpful, as are the other videos on the channel! The problem I often face is that, because I live in a bigger city (and not all people always being polite …), I often cannot do the ‘right thing’, because I cannot control the narrow space or people coming rapidly into the dogs space before I see it. There is little advice on this, and my reactive dog is perfectly fine in most situations you see in dog training videos, but these ‘uncontrolled’ situations narrow spaces or with quickly moving people can set reinforcing cycles. Maybe this would be interesting for a video or a course if more people face the same problem.

I recently got an 11 year old pitty boy red nose from the shelter. He is basically a good dog but very nervous boy. I'm trying to build in him some confidence and discipline to help him.... same way maybe the military builds all that. Treats won't help with this even though he likes treats.I am trying to be strong and firm with him. I know not everyone can be like that with a big or strong dog. He, and I believe most dogs understand things if messages from humans are clear to them....... I NEVER HIT OR HURT HIM. But for example, when he crowds me while fixing his food, I take his collar and walk/pull him over to his PLACE..... NO WORDS.... He stayed after 3 repeats. THEY NEEDS FIRMNESS AND GUIDENCE from a leader......not always easy

@m4rtin419
@m4rtin419 7 месяцев назад
Same here :-) This exercise sounds great and I will try it and I do similar things (from high energy tuck play to place/stay), but from my experience with my high drive border collie, it alone won't change it. The reason is, that in my view, a high-drive border collie knows the difference between training and real life, so they will easily regulate themselves in training, but in real life with lots of stimulation that doesn't mean they can/want to regulate. What has helped me most are for example Tylor Muto's impulse control exercises at the doors (I forgot the name he uses for it), where the dog has to learn that he gets access to resources only when I allow it. Along those lines, teaching the dog that it will not get what it wants as long as he is in an aroused state. Also Michael Ellis's approach of building high engagement so that I am more interesting and can redirect the dog has helped me immensely and basically making sure that the dog does not react to everything in its environment and instead focusses the high energy it has on me and on productive things like heelwork etc. But altogether not to expose the dog to too stimulating environments while making sure he or she gets sufficient mental and physical exercises.
