I've got two cats at home and I've started making them sit and stay then getting a treat while in view and putting it somewhere out of sight making them stay until I tell them to go get it. It's made huge progress on there general obedience.
Thank you very much Irene. I have to admit though alot of it is the dog, I just got lucky with a great animal from an awesome breeder. Don't believe all you see though, he is still a little hellion at times, especially if he doesn't get out and work often enough.
This is really awesome! I just recently discovered the breed and about two weeks ago got my first catahoula at 6 weeks old. I have been wanting a hunting partner for a few years now and really feel like I found him. Do you have any recommendations on how to start them out for this kind of training, or obedience in general?
+daniel Thanks Daniel. The honest truth is I have been sooo busy training Bohannon that my energy to produce videos is lowered. I have a ton of ideas and some raw footage but still want some more. Bo and I are progressing through our certifications for tracking with some test dates coming up soon. I will try to get a video out on obedience and agility soon. Stay tuned.
+Nay Nay Beans I don't, but I have seen it done and know of plenty of certified SAR dogs that were trained that way. I prefer to activate the dogs prey drive rather than food drive. I like the run away style of starting a dog trailing. That is having the subject run away keeping the dogs attention. There is a lot written about it and Don Abney has a great chapter in his book www.amazon.com/Canine-Tracking-Guide-Training-All-Purpose/dp/1621871029 about how to set it up. Hope this helps.
