Training A Horse To Lengthen In Trot - In this video, I explain how I teach my horse to do trot lengthening. Before you can teach your horse Medium trot or Extended trot he must understand how to lengthen his trot. This is part of basic dressage horse training and dressage rider training. It was something that I had difficulty doing and in the video, I explain why I had difficulty and then show you how to train your horse. I hope you enjoy it

I struggled to teach my horses to lengthen in the trot and in this video I will tell you what turned that around for me and then I show you how I do it.

Great video Josie! You and Rebel look awesome as usual! I have been trying to get my horse to lengthen his trot for some time now. He is usually pretty short-strided and I would like for him to lengthen and stretch a little. Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to try this out!

your videos are always awesome and so helpful. Thank you so much! I have a small question please: you said at the begin that he should length the stride and his body. We do not want to throw the contact. I understand this. But do i put slightly forward my hands when i ask? Just slightly or do i only soft my hands, i mean open my hands only? Thank you so so much!

Hi Josie, Thank you so much for your informative videos. Love them. I noticed the great surface you have on your arena. I am redoing my arena as it is too dusty unless watered all the time. Would you mind sharing what your surface is? Thanks. Janelle

Sorry to take so long to get back to you Janelle. It’s a mixture of softfall and rivers sand. It does move around too much for me when it is dry. When it’s damp it’s pretty good. I am about to remove a lot of it and try extra sand added. It sux having a surface that your not real happy with doesn’t it! 😊

It doesn't really pertain to this video, but a horse I'm riding in lessons goes really fast at the canter and when I try to get her to go back to trot from canter, it takes the whole long side of the arena to get her to trot. I try to half halt her, but she doesn't really respond that quickly. Any tips or suggestions?

Are you half halting with one rein or both?

Usually with the outside rein and my body but some times the inside and sometimes both. Sorry it is done on a half halt by half halt basis depending on what I feel. In the beginning I used only the outside rein while I was learning.
