I'm WAY MORE HOOKED watching your journey NOW. You've made some bold claims and a lot of us grew up with the mentality of "NO PAIN NO GAIN" and that statement alone gets us to hit a wall over and over. Can't wait for LS Version 2022

There should be a 2h compilation from similar videos and music like from 13:01 until the end. That would be by far the best motivation for zwift/treadmill. Hit a like and let's make this happen!

Glad to see this change of mind. I always follow the '80-20 rule' and I think it holds for beginners and the elite athletes as yourself. Consistency is key for me, stress + rest = growth and race your races, not your workouts. Can't wait to see your 2022 season!

WOW I think you have figured it out mostly. Listen to your coach and execute each session the way it was written and intended, healthy eating, but may I add...be brave enough to recover. I know it goes against every fiber of your being but recovery I think it absolutely essential in your training not just physically but mentally. Thanks for the video and I really like the journey you are on.

Lionel is Athlete Number 3. Athlete Number 3 is both motivated and talented which is great. An issue an athlete like this can run into is constantly thinking they need to go as hard as they can, and that's what ends up breaking them both physically and mentally. The ability to suffer is important in racing. The ability to trust a system and to allow for accumulation of fitness through consistency and proper recovery is super important. The athlete must allow for adaptation to take place, and at Lionel's level this takes both time and intelligence because he is way (light years) beyond a mere fitness effect. Now, balance everything he is doing with the nervous system, hormones, psychology, proper diet, race planning, etc. and you get a world championship winning machine. I absolutely love to see Lionel's emerging analytical approach to training :). Keep it up and stay hungry!!

My introduction to training was the mindset of just "goggins" it. To a lot of my workouts, so physically spent one day I'd be ruined for the following week of training. Having switched that up to a way more holistic method of training, I am getting so much faster with a higher training load, and I can still hit that button to push when I need to, i.e. Race Day.

Lol This guy is starting to show signs of waking up. Triathlon training was worked out back in the 80s. It was slow and easy which becomes easy fast. Look at the finishing photos of the winners of Kona in 94 & 95 to see 2 pros who trained right. Finished right. Life is much much better when you train right. Good luck

Firstly - you are awesome.. I think I figured out why your run looks different from other “the limp” it’s your stride, it’s short on how far forward you throw your leading leg. It looks like your stride could be 6 inches longer .. just from watching that slow mo footage.

Hey Lionel, used to kill myself every session as a full time rower as well, because I thought it was all about making a superhuman effort in every session. Unfortunately, it took me years to discover what Jan was getting at - training’s not about being the best in every session, it’s about being the best on race day having done every session at the correct intensity, with great technique etc. and maybe keeping your powder dry until you really need it. The superhuman effort is required to string hundreds of great sessions and races together. A seasoned cross country skier in the mountains here in Germany told me, “the fighter almost never wins, because the fighter is always fighting, not winning”. His advice was to smile, have fun and stay loose, because that’s what winners do. What do you think?

I can't remember who said it (so I can't give them credit) but the quote goes "you don't get stronger by doing hard workouts...you get stronger by recovering from hard workouts". This means looking at intensity, periodization, nutrition and recovery strategies to find just the right balance for you to keep getting stronger.

I saw this problem constantly in bike racing. Some (most?) guys just wanted to wreck themselves at the front as an end in itself or as some type of macho statement. I termed this type of cyclist as "low IQ/kg". The winners were usually not necessarily the strongest but the smartest racers who paced themselves intelligently and only burned their matches when essential or purposeful.
