Too many people are discouraged by aging, and they end up adopting a fatalistic attitude towards exercise. Here is the deal... aging certainly affects our bodies, but we retain the capacity to adapt to our environments for our whole lives. If you haven't been training, or have been living in an unhealthy way, can ALWAYS improve. Change your environment, and you will change your adaptations. You get ONE SHOT, so do everything you can to stack the deck in your favor. TRAIN!

"to maximise the time I have with the people I care about" you hit the nail on the head here. To me NOT exercising is extremely selfish, you are shortening your life, worsening your health outcomes and at the end of the day, you are an example to your children, you should do everything in your power to ensure that they have everything they need in life, a good example of how to live should be principle among them.

I'm a former track & field athlete, jumper/sprinter. Just turned 42. I'm a 5 year survivor of a stage IV cancer Lance Armstrong style. I've had my right nut cut off, my head cut open twice to remove masses, gamma radiation was beamed across the back of my skull and I was poised nearly to death by toxic chemo drugs. Upon discharge from the hospital, I weighed 140lbs at 6' and got winded walking up a flight of stairs. I'm up to 163lbs, 10-12% BF, I can do 13 very strict pull ups, and when I'm out road biking I burn past teenagers. So I don't want to hear your bullshit excuses. The best advice I can give regarding training as you age is you have to train smarter. Listen to your body, it will tell you what you can and can't do. The progressive overload should be very gradual. Setting goals is nice, but trying to achieve a 500lb bench and all that stuff shouldn't be a priority anymore. Staying overall healthy and just feeling good should be the primary goal from here to the end.

Congratulations to you as a survivor and fighter. I'm an 11 year survivor of stage IV inoperable throat cancer, so I know very well the grueling chemo and radiation treatments involved with late stage cancer. I went from 187 to 150 at 6' tall. To this day, it is still a struggle to gain weight! On a good day I am maybe 165-167 ... usually 162 or a little less. I am thankful to God for saving my life and giving me a second chance, when I could have been a goner. I had superb medical care at UT Southwestern Medical in Dallas ... they are as good as M.D. Anderson in Houston. Best of good health and good fortune to you!

Spot on. My Grandad was 97 when he died and still digging his own garden, his healthspan matched his lifespan and then he just expired. He didn't get to 60 and then live miserably for 37 years stuck to a chair with an oxygen tank taking 20 pills every morning. His training was tending a massive garden all day, every day. Take a look around when you go for a walk, how many people do you see who are lean, muscular and healthy. We are basically living in an environment that we weren't designed for, eating foods we weren't designed to eat. Thanks for another great video, the message is very clear.

I added consistent exercise in June. I just weighed in and I am now 198. I am walking 7 miles, 4 times per week and I am doing simple body weight exercises to lay a foundation to eventually build the strength to have robust exercise sessions like you demonstrate. As I have progressed, my doctor has taken me off 3 blood pressure medicines, long-term Nexium use, Adderall and two depression meds. I have also stopped taking Aleve every morning for debilitating joint pain in my hands…the pain is gone. I am more encouraged now than ever and pray I will have the discipline to continue “Training for Life”

I subscribed about a month ago because I liked the signal to noise ratio (very high) and the workouts really matched where my life has taken me. I'm almost 70, I survived a "widowmaker" heart attack at 64. I bounced back to set personal bests on my Concept 2 rowing machine and started doing triathlon races and winning the 50 and over group a number of times. Last fall I was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma which was a death sentence 10 years ago, but now is treatable. I decided that this year was the year to forget the racing and concentrate on staying alive. Do the cancer treatments, eat well and work on my overall fitness and well being. Simple calisthenics are working to add some muscle to my upper body and make me feel great. I've been blessed with some good genetics (other than my fair skin) and I've never struggled with my weight. I love my exercise time now, I hit it hard, I'm improving and I don't get injured. If I continue to be lucky I'll get 10-15 years of good physical health and if the cancer gets me then I'll still be happy to get as far as I can.

KB, I’m 50 years old, and though I’ve always been above average in terms of fitness/activity, I’ve also always been self-judgmental about my relative skinny-ness. Inspired by your keep-it-simple videos, I was able to design a program that finally stuck, and I have kept a daily exercise program (with daily record-keeping) for the last six months, which is a lifetime personal best in terms of length and consistency. Even better, I have added 15 pounds of muscle (now 160lbs @ 6-feet) and even with the added mass, my rep count in push, pull, and squats is also at a lifetime high. In other words, at 50 years old, I’m more massive and physically stronger than I have ever been in my life. I get a lot of credit for doing the work, but you get a lot of credit for the life-changing inspiration, philosophy, and program design. In contrast to the cacophony of ‘get fit quick’ content on the web, my personal mantra has been: “How *slowly* can I get fit?” I ask myself this constantly. The result is a simple and humble program that, paradoxically, got me fitter than I’ve ever been, and in just months, after decades of false starts. For those interested, here’s my program, a four-day cycle: Day 1: Single set* of push (push-ups) Day 2: Single set of legs (standard squats) Day 3: Single set of pull (pull- or chin-ups) Day 4: Rest** day (no sets allowed!) After a couple months, I was getting more capable joints and muscles, so I upgraded to: Day 1: Three sets push, one set legs, one set pull (4 minute rest between all) Day 2: Three sets legs, one set push, one set pull Day 3: Three sets pull, one set legs, one set push Day 4: Rest day (no sets allowed!) Important Notes: *Set = anything between 1 rep and reps-to-failure. Most days, I go to failure or just short of it. Some days, if I’m feeling low, I do ONE REP and call it a day (sometimes at 11:59pm). But - and this is critical - that COUNTS. It’s still on program for getting fit ‘as slowly as possible!’ **Rest day: I typically do some light movement, maybe walking 1-3 miles, or a dance class or both. Critically, reps and sets are NOT ALLOWED. It is this restraint that has kept me yearning to come back for the next 4 day cycle, rather than burning out. Rest day is the most important day of the program. And it’s perfectly on program with getting fit “as slowly as possible.” Push: Started with push-ups, now on some days I opt for dips or declined push-ups. Pull: Pull-ups or chin-ups, whatever I feel like. Legs: Started with basic squats, now on some days I do squat-to-jumps. Minimum baseline: I should say that I also am conscious about my diet (drink only water, eat real food, low carbs, high protein, little sugar), and on most days I walk 1-3 miles, or maybe a bike ride. Also, I do 5-10 minutes of joint warm-up and active stretching before any rep session. Thanks dude, literally wouldn’t have done it without you.

Awesome comment! What an inspiring plan! I’m just a couple of years behind you age-wise and have also been following a KB-inspired simple workout plan for 6 months. It’s been life changing already, and mostly because I focus on consistency and good form, and just showing up for the minimum on the days I run out of time or don’t feel up to it. I love your idea of getting fit slowly! That’s the way to go! Thanks for sharing your workout plan. It’s thought provoking, and I might borrow some of those ideas!

I've been enjoying your content a lot. I used to do barbell training, was injured/ couldn't balance it with physical work, and fell off hard years ago. Now I've got a kid and no time/ cash for the gym at the moment, and your stuff gave me the push to stop using that as an excuse to get more and more out of shape. After only a month I feel better than I have in ages, and your content definitely pushed me in the right direction. Thanks!

Also I started your free course on making my first pull-up a month ago combined with OMAD and it works great for me for the moment. I feel my body composition changing and also I do see first results on my max reps while doing rowing sets. Can't wait to brag about it more in few months, hopefully with better results. Hey man. At 26 and after many years of being a lazy bum I came across you as well as others in the calisthenics world, and I'm down for it. I've only just started but I'm already doing dead hangs and progressive pushes, pulls, dips as well as squats and other leg work. It's killing me but this is just the start. I'm using muscles I didn't even know I had, so thank you. I've watched a lot of your videos and it's everything I needed, I will absolutely be back. So thank you again.

!!!!!!! I love all of your videos and messages, KBoges. I am 45, and have managed to work my way back from some wretched injuries, and now I'm doing things that were previously filed under "Those days are long gone". And I just finished my second week of your "How to increase your max pullup". Last week I accumulated 100 pullups, and this week 116. Holy smokes, that's insane volume for me. So I'm just gonna to keep going. One of the things that has resonated with me so much is your perspective or attitude on the relationship between training and living (and I'd say general well-being). At the heart of everything about my training, I am thinking about how it increases my body's capacity to do work, and how it becomes more tolerant to what the world may throw at me, and what I ask out of myself. And all of this is so I can be here longer, and do more cool, interesting stuff along the way. Thank you for all of your amazing content. I'm betting that a lot of people are finding your videos to be incredibly useful. ~ Michael

Thank you for making me love working out again. It is simple and easy to consistently do. I've come to realize with your videos that having the dream physique is not the main goal of working out. its to be healthy, the great physique just come along with it. When I watched your videos I worked out again to just be healthy and not think about the aesthetic shit I wanted before. But then my body just gotten better looking without me even trying. I got more compliments from people that I look good and this time I didn't even try and I enjoyed the process. Everyone created this idea that when working out you need to go to the gym, work your ass off, count your calories etc. but not everyone would enjoy such thing, and I believe working out should be for everyone. Some people just wants things to be simple and thank you for being that youtuber. reintroducing to us and reminding us that working out is simple. You've become a channel we can go to proving that working out should be simple, fun, not time consuming and inexpensive, while still being very effective. So with that thank you again you will forever be part of who I am right now.
