Hi Andy. I’m a 56 yr old chap who got chest pain walking up stairs. You and the Running Channel team have helped me after my wife did the couch to 5k to start running since and since July I’ve dropped 70 pounds and have completed a number of 5ks (my last being under 33 mins which for me is fantastic). As a Brit in the U.S. I wanted you to know that every step on your marathon journey is pulling me and people like me along with you - so thank you sir !
I'm training for my first marathon as well! It took me 3 years to fully recover from Plantar Fasciitis, partly due to my pancake plat feet, and partly due to wearing majorly incorrect shoes for running. I watch every video, and listen to your podcast everyday while driving to work, to keep my motivation at an all time high. Just got my first pair of NB 1080's, hoping to win the SuperComp New Balance to complete my rotation. Keep up the amazing work!
Impressive effort as a father, working, and preparing for the marathon!! Wish you a lot of success and enjoyment on your first marathon! I will do my first marathon in April 2024, it will be the Rotterdam Marathon. I'm starting now my training process and I look forward to seeing how I develop! :)
Thanks for sharing! I'm a mom of 3 little ones 5 and under and definitely understand the struggle of finding the time and energy to fit training into an already packed schedule. Looking to start training for another marathon in the spring. Good luck on your marathon! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Currently training for my first half marathon and hopefully going to move onto training for first marathon next year. Love seeing the training you are doing for your first! Can't wait to see your results Andy, you're doing amazing 🎉🎉
Thank you for sharing your preparation. I'm planning to tackle my first marathon next year. I'd like to make a suggestion: Could you make a post/video with recommended races for first time marathon runners? I'm looking at the 2024 races calendar and see many nice events, I believe it would be cool to have your opinion and some data comparison between races track, elevation, organisation, etc Keep up the great work. Kudos! ❤
Good luck Andy! I agree that on this tough sessions it’s as much mental as physical. Considering which Marathon to go for, having done 6 halfs. Didn’t get the London ballot so possibly Brighton.
If you cannot fit a gym session spread it out through the day. Seated calf raises at the desk, squats between meetings and so on. You don't get the cardio from it, but the cardio isn't the point of gym anyway
Also, for the gel. Takesips through a K or so instead of gulping it down. It helped me when I stared to fuel on the run. Now I can gulp it down with no prob.
Hello! I am 43 years old, I trained for about a year for the Marathon and I finished it in 3 hours and 51 minutes. My goal was under 4 hours (which I achieved). Being an elite athlete, you will definitely finish in less than 3 hours... I wish you good health and strength in training💪. "Don't stop when you're tired, stop when you're done!" -David Goggins
I’ll be 43 end of this year and attempting my first full marathon trail run here in New Zealand on the East Coast of Gisborne in January. Consider myself to be more of a novice and there is Half Marathon coming up in 2 weeks. Have been building up my aerobic base since August and have learnt a great deal since then, Aiming to finish under 2 hours if not close. The full marathon, will see how things unfold 😎 wish me luck 😁
Can you imagine when your kids are older, seeing this video, how proud they will be of you? Being a dad, having a job, and still putting in the work for a marathon 🤩
I feel so encouraged to see that you’re only doing 3 runs/ week and 2 strength training days. I’ve had this idea you need 5-6 runs per week and still fit in 2 days at the gym. Thank you for taking us along your journey 😁
I agree with you. I have been thinking for a while that my three runs a week + strength training was not enough for me to achieve my own goals. This got my mind back on the right track, I think :-D
A coach told me that one of his clients BQ’d on 3 runs a week, a long indoor bike and 2 strength sessions 🤷🏼♀️ and that gave me a lot of hope, also as someone who is prone to injury, I love not running 2 days in a row!
Don't forget this is an ex-professional athlete, his body remembers. You won't get the same results if you never ran in your life before signing up for a marathon. All this adds over the years - right now my race estimate it equal to my marathon result and that is BEFORE I even start the training block for the next marathon. Likewise a professional athlete can probably still go 2:35-2:45 marathon while running 20 mpw off-season. EDIT: So I just watched till the end of the video - 2hrs 8 minutes for a 30K? Yeah, there is no way he doesn't benefit from years of professional training.
As a father of 3 kids, one of which is 3, I feel you with those 3 am thoughts. It's encouraging to see a real life example of fitting in this level of training in a normal adult life.
I started running in 2019 when I was 53. I signed up for a half marathon in the spring of 2020. We all know what happened then. Since I had put all of the work in, I decided to double down and see if I could run the virtual full 6 months later. I can't begin to thank you for all of the videos. Without The Running Channel, I am sure I wouldn't have completed my first Marathon at the age of 54. I may be slow, but I am still running. However, I am sticking to half marathons now. I will be running the Route 66 half in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this month.
I got into running during the pandemic and have since completed a couple of half marathons and a 50k on trails, at 55 I'm constantly suprised at what my body is still happy to do, I listen to your podcasts when I'm running, they're always encouraging and fun to listen to, thanks!
Thanks for representing the dad marathoner. I’m sending this to my non-parent friends so they can understand how hard it can be to fit it all in. I had my second child in the middle of a marathon block this year I had to fit in some runs from the hospital (poor planning on my part - my excuse is I signed up literally the day before my wife told me we were pregnant)
Great work Andy! As a dad of 4 myself you’re doing a great job. I’m completely understand how hectic “restdays” can become with kids. I’m training for a 5k PB at the moment.
I must admit to be one of the podcast enthusiasts, after witnessing the landscapes (especially the fields) and rigorous training sessions in this video, I'm seriously considering joining Team Andy! (Stopping to look at fields it is.) Your dedication in balancing training with everyday responsibilities is truly inspiring, and I have no doubt that you'll conquer your goals in Valencia. Keep pushing yourself, and best of luck in the upcoming marathon!
Love how Andy's "social life" consist of dropping the kids too and from parties and events. Your long run looks really tough, running around 4:00 min/km after 20k is impressive! I just finished the marathon in Sweden in 3:08, which makes me really want to try for a sub 3 hour in Paris in April. However, the 4:15 pace still looks really daunting.
French man here! Congrats for your 3h08 marathon. But be careful with the parisian one, it is considered a slow one because of the uphill-downhill at the end, on the dock of the river Seine, right at the level of km 30 for the marathon wall. I will be there also (first one for me) and try to keep me expectations low.
Hello from Australia, love seeing the training progress and all other amazing videos on this channel, also not sure if you would ship the shoes out to Aus but would be cool if you could. I myself have just gotten back into running and it would be epic to have a top end shoe to run in. Keep up the great videos.
I will be turning 45 next week and I'll be running my first marathon in Malaga this December. Best of luck to you Andy in your first marathon and remember to enjoy it! It's not about making a PB but about celebrating all your hard work so far!
I'm running a 15K race next week! The Zevenheuvelenloop, fastest race in the world!! Very excited and inspired after seeing your training. I'm also a big big fan of the pod. Good luck with the final weeks of training! After this Sarah and Rick can't pull the "you never ran a marathon" card anymore lmao.
You’ll smash your marathon, Andy! I ran my first marathon last month and it was such an emotional race. I didn’t hit my A goal, but I was so proud to just finish it. The best thing to do is enjoy the experience, chunking definitely helps too!
I'm 37 and training to improve all my PBs. Just hit a new PB on the half marathon at 2h21 min 2 weeks ago. working on a sub1-hour 10K (hopefully tomorrow PB), then will go back to improve my half marathon and keep alternating
You're smashing it, Andy! I'm training for my first marathon to stick it to my chronic pain, and everyone on the Running Channel have been so inspiring. THANK YOU FOR EXISTING! Also, Run Hack - Comedy seems to be the direct antidote to mid-run panic attacks and mental blocks. As soon as I feel something looming, I switch from music to stand-up, retrain my breath, and the miles feel so much lighter afterwards. Probably old news, but it's worked for me for a year now
Thanks for the video. It's really interesting. I am 53 and training for my first marathon (now or never type of decision) Paris, April 2024. I have been struggling with scheduling between the sessions (when to do what - running, strength...). I will certainly implement some of yours. What time do you get up in the week for your runs then, and what do you eat before you head out of the door? Good luck and keep us posted!
I just finished my second half marathon (did my first a month ago) and now I'm going to look towards doing a full marathon in april! Just going to focus on milage and start looking at a 5k and 10k pb!
The editing, composition and color correction of this video were gorgeous. You guys are creating great content. Thanks for all you do & good job Andy! You’ll absolutely smash it.
Good stuff Andy! I can only imagine how tough it would be to juggle parenting with work and running, but clearly it can be done! Running my second ever marathon this weekend, and feeling a fever coming on today so hopefully I’ll weather the storm and make it out on Sunday! Tough finding my 31cm shoe size here in Japan so would love to have another pair of trainers.
It’s refreshing to see the struggles that working parents with small children go through when trying to train. I have one toddler and she’s enough lol. I hope to run my first marathon next year. Keep pushing! You got this!
Thanks for sharing this, I just started training for my first marathon this year too and I’ll be about 39 for the race itself. Congrats on finishing your marathon race at 40, Andy! Very inspirational 🎉
Love your videos, Andy! I’m training for my first marathon in the spring. I’ve got two young kids so I relate to you on the middle of the night wake ups! My mantra is ‘I’m lucky to be here!’ Good luck, Andy! You’re inspiring!
I love new balance as a running shoe! That being said, congrats on training for your first marathon. 2 tips (unsolicited of course), 1) you may need to get a second pair and break them in the week or two before the race as you'll be putting a lot of miles on the current ones. 2) On race day, start slow, the excitement had me starting at a pace that caused me issues later. Cheers & GL!!
wow wow wow!! I completed my longest run yesterday being 3K! We all start somewhere though!! Well done!! VERY INSPIRATIONAL!!!

Well done Andy! It's not easy to balance everything and still make time to train. Like you, I used to run short, explosive distances during college - specifically, the 110m hurdles. Now, at 39, I'm running long distances for the first time. This year, I was completely paralyzed for 3 months due to a severe case of Guillian Barre syndrome. I started walking again in March, and by September, I ran a 5k in 20:52. In October, I completed a 10k in 44:32. Currently, I'm training for a half marathon and am in the best shape of my life.
Hi Andy! Gels are always disgusting and I never found one that suited me. They are something that you just have to endure. I have only completed one marathon but what I was not really anticipating was the overwhelming emotion in the last half mile. Especially if you have family and friends at the finish line. Best of luck with the continued training. 👍
6 weeks time and I'll begin training for Brighton marathon ... dreading those long 30ks! I think i'll be exact same as you! I cant wait for the next video! good job, very entertaining so far.
I’m a bit late on this video but as a parent myself I’ve been looking at ways to begin marathon training. I’ve done a few half’s but nothing at this distance! Discipline and consistency is probably my key take away from this and make sure I’m not skipping mobility and s&c!! Great video
I don’t know what’s more exhausting about parenting, the getting up early, or acting like you know what you’re doing. Nice to see some normal life gymnastics to fit your training in.
I've just started training for my first ever Marathon so I'm not able to give any advice but hope the rest of your training goes well and thanks for sharing your progress 😊
Hi. Enjoyed the video Andy. Great to see the improvement with a structured training plan. Impressive how you've stuck to the training plan while balancing kids, job commitments etc.👏 Best of luck in the Marathon.👍
I'd love a pair of 1080s thanks 😊 ... My London 2024 training block starts soon. I've been neglecting long runs since GNR .. but think I'll be ok. Will be my first marathon too - at 43yrs. So 🤞
Good video, Andy! Thanks for sharing. New Balance isn't a good shoe. Hopefully someone who REALLY loves NB wins them; otherwise, they're going to Goodwill. Adidas is king!
Should I be running tempo sessions now for next year’s London marathon or just building the mileage (currently running 10km, 10km and 20 or 25km per week)?
Made my first 30km in 5,5 years on the treadmill the other day. Only 12km to go, then the comeback is fulfilled. I hurt in places I didn''t know I had....:- )
Hi I'm 65, living in Thailand. Just started back to running after a 5 year break, now training for a 10k race in February 2024. Love the videos. Thanks for the inspiration
Currently training for Rome Marathon (March 2024), wouldn't mind training in these beautiful New Balance shoes! Keep on pushing Andy, can't wait to see your race day vlog!
Hello! Good luck for your marathon! I am 38 and training for my first ever marathon in Cooperstown, New-York State on June 1st 2024. Your video really boost me up for my own training today! 😁
Good work! It’s nice to follow along. Today I’m buying the ticket for my fist marathon. So excited 🥳🥳 I will be running next year the Richmond marathon. Good luck for Valencia.
Nice work Andy, love the focus on gym work for helping your body cope with that high mileage! I’m hoping to run either Berlin or London in 2024 (lottery/GFA ballot pending) and would love to get my hands on a pair of the 1080V13! :)
