The PWAS stands for The Philippine Warrior Arts Society and is committed to the preservation of, active practice, and promotion of all disciplines of Filipino Martial Arts. We were lucky enough to be invited to their gathering of the top instructors in the Alberta, Canada area. Here they explore their concepts and teaching and break bread together while celebrating martial arts.
In this seminar we have Kevin Goat from Calgary Gong Fu Academy teaching how he teaches and drills knife self-defense. In this seminar, he shows how to build on your drills and pressure test your skills to see what works and what doesn't. I hope you enjoy it!
For more videos like this, we have put together an online course with Kevin Goat learn more about it here: budobrothers.tv/pages/self-de...

Thanks for sharing this content Kevin, and a Budo brothers. Important concepts when you have to grapple and not just reply on strikes alone. This range comes in a lot when pressure testing - keep up the great work guys

Excellent piece of work. I'd love to come train with you guys, and will be doing that at the first opportunity after certain travel mandates are removed from entering the US.

It's easy to beat an amateur. No one holds his hand in front of him, it is deflected past and is wound up by the torso. You can't get hung up on defense, you need to carry a constant threat, the easiest way is to hit the attacker with your forehead nose. To hit the eyes with fingers, the groin with a knee, the shin with a shoe.

Good point, you have to attack as you deflect

Question; wouldn’t you want to disarm the weapon at any point of the attack?

If your knife hand (right hand) is in an arm control like @ 1:13 - 1:36 you pass the knife to left hand, and continue...somewhat like he did @8:21

Just wondering, why not when checking the attack, drive finger into eyes ??

I don’t have anybody to train with. I don’t know where there’s anything around where I live.

I have one training partner. We have very different skills and experience. Our goal is the same: survival. There are a couple Martial Arts Schools here. Tae Kwon Do, BJJ. There's a fairly large military base nearby. Still nothing to do specifically with blades. I find that the amount of cardio I get just practicing by myself on my target is intense. I can ride my bike or walk for a long time. This stuff dumps your adrenaline and exhausts you quick. I too like this instructor. My favorite short is when he drops his training partner with pure aggressive, forward motion, and elbows. Done.

Once you have your right hand behind his elbow why not just break his arm by using your weight and pushing down?

i have seen law enforcement go from that initial arm control to a takedown. serious aggressive response is critical. you will get cut! can you deal with that and still defend yourself? if you can't then you wont survive. if you can run away then do it, but if you cant then you better be prepared to do whatever it takes to survive. no rules here!...none!

If your in that arm control and some how the guy didn’t pull back and reengage a knife stroke then wouldn’t a arm break be a safe option then trying to push away from a knife. As soon as he feels the let go he can pull back and if you put your hands there to push off your getting cut. Don’t much like this drill it’s practical cause you will get cut but I feel like even as civilians you should hit a little to improve your get away chances.

That’s working there because both of you agree to do it. In real life that “defense” will lead to the death of the person under attack!

If the guy had half a brain - he'll come at you with his empty hand - and while you're trying to defend that he'll be stabbing you every which way but loose - as u try to control his knife hand - he'll switch to thumbing your throat, eye, etc... stomping your foot, knees, etc... back to stabbing you - just mix and match. Wear full contact gear - use a hard blunt marking knife and try your empty hand defense. Don't tell the knife guy how to attack - and see how u do.

Anyone who is the type of person who can stick a blade into another human being, has probably done time in prison. He will have had the best training on how to stab someone, which is not to let the intended victim know he's gonna get stabbed. You won't know until it's too late. Best knife defense, is don't put yourself in situations where it can happen. THERE ARE NO KNIFE DEFENCES . A 10 year old kid can kill the Greatest martial artist 💯

Yeh...this guy's doing grappling with a knife. Not good. You can snatch the knife away and send the guy down without doing clinches. It works for him because he's a BIG GUY. And he can clinch and work close quarters and 'maybe' not get sliced or stabbed. i wouldn't do this shit. It's gotta be faster if you're going to snatch the knife. Otherwise, take your coat off to slap the guy with it or pick up a chair and beat the guy with it. But if you go hand to hand, this is bullshit.
