Did you learn these techniques from the Squirrel? I’ve only watched one of the videos so far, on using their food to chase after and involving their minds.

Not just from STAS although I'm pretty sure there are variations of these. But through puppy classes, Training Academy, Pro Trainer class... I used a lot of these with Skene as an adolescent dog too. :)

I never realized the significance of the "switch" game. I just happened to notice that my girl Mandy would always go for the toy that I was holding so I made a game out of it. I'll def be using it on our new pup !

Aeon has taken to copying me. I have a few grocery stores we go to where we’re both accepted. When we go in he now peels off to do his puppy shopping. Usually a ball or a toy he thinks he needs. It’s amazing how intelligent the Border Collies are, I’ve never laughed harder at people’s reactions to him. Your videos have truly inspired me to really try to look at things from his perspective and have the trust to let him do him. Thanks again for all your hard work. You make us look sooooo good,

oh my god how have i never found this channel before? I've had my border collie for 4 years now and our training experience has been lacking a little bit in the past year or so. he is so resilient and willing to learn, I'm determined to resume our fun training/relationship. Thanks for this video! He does tend to get quite nervous sometimes so the attention exercise is one we will begin doing every day now!

I have a question! Why do you create this space for the puppy with the fence? It's not usual in my country, we let the puppy walk around the house, and he gets his own crate and bed in the living room. The puppytrainingcenter never mentioned this as well. With the two dogs I've had, we never did this. A border collie pup will come into our lives next year, so I want to be good prepared! I am curious to the purpose.
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 3 года назад
Basically I want to make it easy for the puppy to rehearse certain behaviours because the more a pup rehearses a behaviour, the more they will be likely to repeat the behaviour in the future. So the x-pen keeps him out of trouble. The x-pen can be temporary, I don't have one up anymore. Puppies can be expected to chew, get into things, pee on the floor etc etc, so the x-pen is just one more tool to limit the pup's choices. You can use a crate for this too. :)

Great trainer with great tips. However, I didn't hear her say that these type of trainings must continue daily and at 10 - 15 mins at a time. Otherwise, a few mins weekly won't do anything positive.

I need some advice, I currently have 2 small dogs who both have learning problems so I dont mind the slight pull on the lead or one of them barking at another dog since he stops when i tell him to look ahead, honestly the both of them on walks are all over the place in terms of what they want to sniff it just goes right left right left. I am getting a border collie puppy and I was wondering when training and walking the puppy outside alone should I take her on a seperate walk away from the other 2 and when someone else is their to walk them with me to bring the puppy along to understand just because their doing something doesnt mean you should? and when the pup is greatly trained start talking all 3 together when i have to walk them by myself?

My question is; do you think border collies understand the dangers of vehicles? My Jess comes to work with me, as a contract gardener. I don't tie her up, or lock her in yards, at 3 years old, she is extremely aware of boundaries and limitations, and very rarely does an unapproved activity. All of my customers adore her, inviting her inside for treats and pats, but they all tell me, Jess is wanting to get back outside with me. When we go camping at the beach, the danger zone is the 4wd's on the beach, I am unsure if she understands that vehicles pose a risk. When I tell her we are going for a walk (unleashed) she runs ahead from the camp-site, through the dunes, to where the beach starts, waits for me, then when I am nearby, runs for the water. I want happy camping, so I don't raise my voice, I do throat clearing, or other negative, non threatening sounds, which she responds to. Do you think they recognise vehicles are dangerous?
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 2 года назад
Honestly they often don't recognize vehicles as a danger. A lot are chase driven and some do get killed tire biting sadly. :( I would keep her restrained if there is a chance of vehicles or 4WD's coming by.

I've had my puppy 3 days now, she is 9 weeks old and and has an upset stomach (taking worming medication and probiotics). She is now on a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice), and since most training require treats should I postpone the training until we can use treats? I could train her with tiny bits of chicken but I'm concerned she could be overeating in her current condition. Any advise?
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 3 года назад
I would use the chicken she is eating for training. Most of the time I use part of my puppy's daily meal anyway. With puppies I wouldn't be as concerned about overeating as not eating enough. I was surprised at how much more they need to eat than adult dogs. But for her tummy's sake I would stick to whatever her diet is and keep the sessions really short.

One thing I tried with Aeon was a game of catch his paw. I’d let him know I was going to grab his paw and entice him to stop me as gently but firmly and as fast as possible. When he’d catch my hand in his mouth he wouldn’t hurt me. We’d do this as fast as possible working on speed and accuracy but as gentle as possible. I’d just stop pulling the second he caught my hand. (Also I’d never grab him roughly. Only as gentle as possible. We went into chasing quad copters. Aeon can jump 6 or so feet in the air and grab the copter without damaging it. The thing this taught him was gentle. He’s 3 and has never ever bit anyone other than me and his bites are gentle.

I'm so lucky we trained recalls from puppy, he came back after 20 meters of sprint after I recalled him. Good the driver in the car stopped and blocked the road.. Absolutely marvelous vid!😊👍 Again, I want so badly to put these into practice! When I got my Sally, she was 8 years old and had anxiety problems. Yet, as I worked with her and trained her, she taught me as well. I can't really explain it, but she taught me how she wanted to be treated and trained. She taught me just as much as I taught her... perhaps even more so... because of her, I have a deeper appreciation for life and the natural world around us. I love you Sally.🐶❤🐾 Your Raven is so beautiful too! As well as your other Border Collies.

Hi!! I just found your channel, i think your videos are amazing and very informative, so i was wondering if you could answer this question. I have a 2 month old border collie, he’s the sweetest, but whenever we say no to something he starts growling and continues to do what we told him not to, but more aggressively. And we only say no when bites us without any apparent reason (he often bites us while we’re sitting on the couch, or when we’re eating, even if he ate 10 minutes before). Hope you can answer how can we change that behavior, thank you!
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 3 года назад
Puppies tend to bite a lot! But when they try to bite you, replace with a toy or something appropriate to chew. Frozen kongs or toppl food dispensers or hooves etc filled with a small bit of food are good to give because puppies do need to chew a lot while their adult teeth begin to develop. If he gets wound up and is biting extra, it’s nap time! Time to go in the crate with something to chew. When my puppy starts pulling my pant legs I know he is overstimulated and needs a rest. I will give him a bit of time with toys in his xpen or do boundary work for times I want him to he calm. When he a overtired and biting he goes in a covered crate usually with a frozen hoof that has a bit of dog food in it, not for punishment, but for needed rest.

Basically you have to contain the dog in a safe area (like a crate) and provide things to chew. Himalayan yak chews last a long time. Boundary training as a fun game is something you can do when you are together in preparation.

Won’t that encourage digging in the trash ?
@TheDogVlog
@TheDogVlog 3 года назад
Actually it gives them an outlet so they don't have to do that. :) Same as digging - some people create a digging area by adding sand to a kid's pool. Foraging is something that dogs love to do. But it is also important to keep trash secured away from young (and all) dogs, who will eat all kinds of things that they shouldn't.
