had my cdl for 55 years proud to say never in an accident or a ticket. i hauled just about anything down the road. i enjoyed hauling pre stressed concrete bridge beams weighing 60 ton and a 120 feet long. a little advice for you aaron, pay close attention to your surrondings and watch both mirrors constantly, it will help keep you out of trouble. good luck bud

I like to scan up one side of the road from one mirror, back down the other side to the other mirror, then across the gauges, and repeat... not always the same direction etc, but you're always across everything that's going on !

Bruce, I had my class A since 1990. And had to relinquish it just after I had a massive heart attack. And neck surgery. I truly do miss being behind the wheel. I know that you brother will learn a lot from you. And I believe that he will do well.

Going strait down the road is the easy part make sure you get a lot of practice backing up into a hole, & quickest way to fail the test is by not doing a proper Pre-Trip, they want to hear you say what your looking at and what your looking for

Its the same here in NJ but I already had my permit when I went a driving school, called Smith & Solomon. My parents, who have CDLs, paid almost $3K out of pocket for me. Refurbished them in my taxes and kept the leftovers. Went there for about 4 months where they train you from start to finish and took the road test at the DMV. Have tanker on mine, but planning on getting my hazmat in the new year

Time in the saddle brother that’s what it’s all about and a patient teacher. Back when I learned we rode with cousins, or in my case, uncle’s. My uncle Charlie RIP was phenomenal, everything was twin stick anyway back then and he never scratched a gear I swear. Once I jumped in something with a splitter and pre-select I was in Heaven. Anyway, great job both of you guys and a quick tip on backing, steer from the bottom of the wheel and turn the way you would normally, left for left right for right. 👍🇺🇸

I studied the CDL manual and was about to take my test, but unfortunate circumstances got in the way and I wasn't able to finish. Luckily, I retained a lot of the knowledge and would probably still be able to pass. I just don't have a truck to take my test in...lol. My cousin drove dump trucks and my uncle drove refrigerated goods, so I come from a family of semi drivers. Both retired because of bad health (which is a whole new situation, especially if you're gonna be a long haul driver. Ask about "white line fever"...lol) Awesome to see people interested in truck driving, Lord knows we need more drivers.....our stuff won't get to us without them. Important job, FOR SURE! 😎

over here in the UK it is slightly different again, as most 4 wheelers are manual stick shift, if you pass in a 4 wheeler manual, then can get the HGV as automatic driving test, and able to drive manual trucks because you already got a manual test done. but be the same as you if it was an automatic driving test for the 4 wheeler, as in you would need to pass the truck test with a manual truck to be able to drive a manual truck. but once you pass with a manual it carries over to all different vehicles.

This brings back memories. Back in January 1986, before there was a CDL, with the help of a friend, who told his company that I use to be his co-driver. They did not give me a road test. He drove the rig off the yard and then put me behind the wheel. One he told me the basics, he went to the sleeper. It was a 1984 Kenworth with just a 9 speed transmission.I can certainly relate to how this guy felt behind the wheel. When I came up to a weigh station, I would pull over and wake my friend up. I was scared to drive thru myself. LOL I'm now 83 and retired but I still miss it.

Bruce, it will help Aaron a lot if you discuss while driving if out together that you explain when you are checking your mirrors, and which mirror, as while slightly easier to see in a cab compared to a 4 wheeler, it could come across that you are checking round a corner or something. but as someone already said mirrors on a truck should be used a lot more than a 4 wheeler, at least once every 10 seconds I was told, but as far as I am aware no-one has ever failed a driving test for checking mirrors more often than that say once every 5 seconds. but yes definately using them on bends, like left hand bend checking the left mirror most, and on a right bend checking right mirror most.

The two hardest things I had to learn was parallel parking an alley docking when I went to school they choose what you do when you take your exam it’s up to the person that’s giving the test which one you should do I had to parallel park on my test so just letting you know it is very difficult as everything of the trailer including the mirrors cannot be outside the lines and you have to figure out what gear to be in because I took it in a manual myself and passed everything good luck keep up the good work PS don’t get discouraged just plow through it
