The Internal Energy of Tai Chi Chuan - Cultivating Qi to Nourish Organs, Training Qi to Move Through Meridians, and Achieving Exercise and Fitness Effects.
Traditional Tai Chi Chuan has explicit methods for training Jin (internal force) and Qi. 'Jin' trains the inner strength, while 'Qi' cultivates the pliable energy of the body. The training of internal force strengthens the connection between muscles and bones, enabling force to flow throughout the body.
Pliable internal Qi can lead and guide this force, allowing it to continuously flow without interruption. At the same time, the energy of internal Qi travels through the meridians, starting from the Yongquan point on the sole of the foot, moving along the liver, kidney, and spleen meridians, collectively known as the Three Yin meridians of the foot. It converges at the Huiyin point within the pelvis, gathering Qi in the Dantian. Following the force, it connects to the coccyx, ascending through the spine, and Qi flows up along the Governing Vessel. The internal Qi oscillates and nourishes the organs along the back, stimulating the movement of internal organs.
With the oscillating motion, Qi travels along the lung, heart, and pericardium meridians, known as the Three Yin meridians of the hand, reaching the fingertips. From there, it follows the large intestine, triple energizer, and small intestine meridians, known as the Three Yang meridians of the hand, until it reaches the Baihui point, where the internal Qi gathers at the topmost point of the body. Transforming the Qi into righteous Qi, it refines and purifies the quality of the internal energy, not only calming the turbid Qi within the body but also consolidating the righteous Qi to focus the mind.
Finally, guiding the internal Qi downward along the Conception Vessel, it sinks back into the Dantian. With the movement of loosening the waist and dropping the hips, the internal Qi spreads along the Stomach, Gallbladder, and Bladder meridians, known as the Three Yang meridians of the foot, returning to the Yongquan point. Hence, the internal Qi circulates endlessly with each movement. When the body is filled with abundant Qi, it naturally stands upright and balanced, with internal and external strength like a sturdy pine tree, full of vitality and spirit.
The essence of practicing Tai Chi Chuan lies in exercising the body, cultivating Qi for health maintenance, using internal Qi to warm and nourish the organs, guiding the internal Qi through the meridians, and regulating the internal organs .
