Very easy to see the shorter step....giving him time to think everything thru as you ease him around is great. Hoping this handsome fella heals up with no more issues! He is in good hands!!

Years ago, we're talking 30 years, my horse got into a spot he had no business being in and got wrapped up in a guide wire from a pole line and pulled his stifle. The vet called it "goose stepping". It too never got worse but never got better. I was able to ride him only at a walk and not as a trail horse. So much has changed and even though he lived a good long life, I wish there was PT for my Sonny. All the best to your beautiful boy!

Short stride obvious from beginning of video. Really appreciate your discussions about PTSD secondary to an injury. Very helpful perspective when considering a horse's reaction to a previous injury. Thank you as always!!

Cysts, joint fragments, one piece of buckshot. Horses manage to do mysterious things to themselves. One nail and forty acres of prime flat land.😮

Hmm, bone cysts dont usually respond to much treatment. They are not like a ganglion or bakers fluid filled lump that you reduce or cut out. They are a fault in the formation of the bone itself, like OCD. They are often fine and an incidental finding on xrays of the horse if they are sound and in work and small in size. If lame however they can continue to be painful and troublesome. The stifle is a large complex joint with lots of movement in it. The leg cannot flex and move with pain in the stifle, as the bone remodels to try and heal it just ends up crunchy and arthritic. Imagine trying to walk with a chunk of bone missing out the middle of your knee. Outcome depends where the cyst (or hole) is located in the bone. If near the surface you can scrape out the thin damaged bone and pack the area with a donor graft bone to fill the hole. If its under the cartilage (Subchondral) causing it to wear and break off bits you can get arthroscopy to clean up the joint surfaces and smooth the irregularity in the joint surface. Arthamid injection (ipaag) may help. If arthitis develops steroid may help but prognosis is guarded. If the hole is located inside the joint or long bones of weight baring limbs then they cause deep bone pain and are inoperable due to location. Return to performance only a fair chance at best, the older the horse the lower the chance of return to performance. Lost 2 horses to bone cysts, pts as they were in pain and lame. Afraid I cant agree with your semantics on short striding. Lame is Lame, the limb is sore and the horse compensates and hides it until he cant. I see lame horses at every show. We cant feel the horses pain and they are masters at hiding it. Travis' problem conformation also not helping him, broken pastern axis bilaterally behind with laxity in the ligaments. Poor boy he looks a sweetie. I hope for a better outcome.

@kellygalvin7775 Месяц назад
I’d agree with your assessment of his confirmation, we look for nice short cannons and muscular forearms on our Arabs , he does seem to have a lot of laxity in those ligaments, I’m sure there are certain lines of Arabians that are affected by DSLD

I see the short stride but sometimes it seems he steps out better. Maybe he's starting to realize it doesn't cause discomfort any more.🤞🏻My mare started short striding a while back and I've tried some check-ups and remedies with a chiropractor and two vets. I'm now trying to determine if she's still sore. She still has had short strides but I hope it's the memory of the discomfort. Time and exercise will tell. I do know that when I hurt, to stop moving is often the worst thing to do; the pain gets worse or at least doesn't improve. Movement is generally good for the body...

If it does relate to pain from a previous injury, disengaging the left hind and making it stretch over in front of the right hind either as ground work or ridden may be beneficial. This longer movement may lead to the horse being willing to move the left leg further underneath itself going forward.

I always look for the back to fall into the imprint made by the front. To me, he is short strided on both but worse on the left. It would be interesting to see videos from earlier... to see his baseline compared to today. As I finish watching the video, I hear that you will list his previous videos. Interesting. Thank you.

It seems to come and go. I had a TWH with bad arthritis in his stifle. The vet gave him an injectable medication for deep bone pain. The results were impressive. If he keeps showing pain it might be worth a try

I had an Arabian that would short stride with his right hind. The vet ended up having to cut his stifles. Don’t think the surgery helped much but he wasn’t in pain.

My suspicion is that his imbalance is in the forehand. It looks like his right feet point out and normally without getting some sling balance. The left hind leg does take a hit and often it’s in the stifle.

I can see it. Injections will help and I agree it might take him some time to realize that it doesn’t hurt like it did before. I had a gelding that had osteoarthritis in his stifle. It was bad too…he had a giant bone spur in there too. At 25 I had to put him down because it was really hard for him to get up if he laid down on that side and I could tell he was hurting. I always watched his hind end and could tell when he was having a good or bad day due to the way he walked.

Well I had an Arab mare smart as a whip and always knew where her feet were at all times. I got her when she was 3. Trainer put me on her on the 3rd ride she ever had. I felt safe on her. Well she always acted stud like and would do some weird stuff on the ground. So we sent her to be bred come to find out her left ovary was so large vet could get on hand on it, he wore a size 13 men’s for rings. Vet asked if we were riding her? Yes why. She was in pain and the vet was surprised she allowed us to ride with no issues. Reason I say this is to let you know how tough she was. Had blood work run and it was all normal even tho her heat cycles were odd and that’s when she. Would act stud. Never was mean to us or did anything that could harm us. Got that fixed and started showing her…..well as she is being showed she was coming up lame left front but it was hard to notice and not all the time. Come to find out she had a hole in her left cannon bone at the “ankle” joint. Vet would normally scrap the area to stimulate bone growth but because of it being so close to the joint surgery is out. So vet liked her pedigree so offered to breed her even tho she had one ovary didn’t matter. Vet was a legend where I’m from in fertility issues. He also had Arabians. Well she never got pregnant but we be dammed if with all the hormones n stuff she came up sound in less than 4 months trying to get her pregnant. Damnit thing ever!!! I miss her❤❤❤. I’m guessing that’s what is going on with him and his lameness issues. Hope he get better soon!!

its common for horses to carry their tails to one side; especially arabs. Its not always an issue unless they suddenly start doing it

@casdragon_5939 Yep. I knew a pure-bred Arabian, that would always carry his tail to the left. Enough so, that another horse in the field, saw it and copied it. And he still does it at times. Even though, the Arab was sold.
