Losses of fruits and vegetables after harvest can be very high in various parts of the world because horticultural crops are highly perishable. This presentation discusses how horticultural crops can best be handled and introduces online training tools that farmers, students, and agriculturists can use to learn about good postharvest practices, to reduce losses, maintain quality, and improve sales.
The first speaker is Elizabeth Mitcham of the Horticulture Innovation Lab, who provided an introduction to the importance of postharvest handling for horticultural crops and how reducing postharvest losses can improve food security.
Speakers Jeff Brecht and Mark Ritenour of the University of Florida introduced a new online training curriculum for postharvest. Each lesson is narrated by a postharvest expert, with slides that the user can navigate between. The training is available in three levels based on difficulty, and each level includes 10 key postharvest topics.
This webinar includes about 1 hour of presentation, followed by an additional 30 minutes of questions and answers with webinar participants. More information about this monitoring & evaluation webinar, including slides, a text summary and links to the training: horticulture.u...
