Training Tokay Geckos NOT to Bite Me! 

This is why I love tokays. Attitude. That is why they were called the f**k you lizard during the Vietnam war. Their call and bark are awesome. Barb picked a fiesty one 😂😂

In first 6 minutes I'm dieing laughing! I'd say the gecko won ROFLMAO and continued winning as he stubbornly held on. Best view of how gorgeous that guy is ,is while he's gripped onto you. Only thing more hilarious would of been if he went after your toes.

Bro this is just real and that's good. You are a professional, but animals are still very difficult because we impose ourselves on them. Nothing to be worried about, we are learning from you and understand filming creates extra challenge.

Those little guys are beautiful! Our instincts would be to grab those guys tight, so it’s very interesting to see the difference when you don’t restrict them in that way. They are clearly very smart! Hi Kevin & Donnie, That was an outstanding video! It's great to see someone show what it takes to get these little guys socialized. I especially found it educational as well as very entertaining. I hope to have at least a couple of Tokay's someday. I first heard about them as a child. Now through this tech that I hate so much, I find that they are attainable and it's finally possible to learn more lot about them. Thanks for the incredible videos!

Seeing Kevin have an imperfect taming moment makes me feel a little bit better about when I have the occasional " oh my gosh I am definitely not making the gains I was going for and I'm going to need to modify the tactics here " moment. Even the best animal tamers and trainers in the world have days like this and individual animals that just don't respond in the way that they were initially expecting. The key is they keep working at it and adapting and adjusting based on what they learn from the individual interactions. There's absolutely nothing like trying to show taming to another human being or filming taming to ensure that something just doesn't go the way that you meant it to. Whether it's from the environment that you're working in being inappropriate, or simply having to split your attention. You see here that Kevin switched from gentle taming to restraint taming. That's sort of a last resort, but when you're dealing with an animal that's gone into extreme panic, restraining them in a very gentle manner and allowing them to eventually realize that even though they are extremely vulnerable right now that they are not actually being harmed is an effective technique when you are dealing with super high volatility animals or when you've had a mishap and accidentally triggered a potentially negative experience. Nobody ever wants to be having to switch to this mode, but it's an important tool to keep in the toolbox when taming.

I had the most incredible interaction with some tokays at the Canadian Breeders Expo in Toronto in Sept. Rachel from The Reptile Shop has the tamest tokays I've ever seen. I could pick them up and handle them as if they were cresties. Her approach is to keep them communally in family groups. That social setting seems to keep the defensive behaviour way down.

Awesome to see! Tokays have always been my favorite gecko. This makes me wanna get another one to try and socialize. The tokay I use to have was named Satan. He would leave anyone who went in his cage leaking blood everywhere. My buddy tried to pick him up with welding gloves one time and he bruised his finger through the leather glove from a bite. He was definitely a special lizard.

Tokay Geckos are beautiful. Horrible how some people treat them. Loved seeing Kevin working to win their trust that he will not harm them. A bite now and then is no big deal. The reward of having earned the trust of the reptile is worth it.

Totally love watching you handle the animal. The female is amazing looking and your handling is one point! What is nice is that you don't let the animal win. So many people during handling/training something goes wrong and they stop so they put the animal away and on a bad note...so they learn that behavior got them what they wanted. Nicely Done Kevin!!! ❤❤❤❤

Lol I love these so much, thank you for suffering for our education. They are SO beautiful, but so feisty, but seeing a wild caught slowly calm like that makes a captive bred seem so easy to work on. Also never feel bad looking like a fool Kevin! You make us feel normal when you struggle like we do, so thank you for showing the struggle and the improvement!

I got nailed by my leachie like that once. I thought it hurt pretty badly until she did that same thing that tokay did where the jaw muscles tighten enough to pull the eyes in. Gecko bites are no joke.

Tokays are hands down the coolest looking Gecks out their. I think once we have solid captive bred programs out there, and they become more tractible to work with, they could be everybit as big as the ball python industry.

I love these longer socialization videos. Keep doing them. Funny you should mention horse training. When a horse is thinking during a training session it will lick and chew. There are a lot of horse trainers out there. One man, Steve Young, uses similar techniques. Thank you Kevin.

Tokek Tokek has the most amazing tokay socializing videos on the platform. It you want to tame down your tokay, check him out. It'll blow your mind. He makes tokays look like any other reptile pretty much. The Reptile Whisperer, a very old channel, is a lady who has tokays that even her daughter can handle and chill out with. Can't wait to see Kevin's go at it here.

I suggest duct taping your thumbs to the palms of your hands the next time you handle this tokay👍😅👍. I love socialization and handling videos. They are an excellent resource for the correct way to interact with animals. Patience, patience, patience. In the end, this tokay finally chilled some and you put him back on a positive note. That is very important for people to know. This defensive tokay may have kicked your butt...actually, your thumb... but you gained the first step to a budding trust which is priceless. Sorry about your thumb - much respect to you as usual.

What a absolute beautiful animal. I love tokay geckos and hope to own one someday. Your videos have helped me "rethread" the trust with my beardie. I took her out in my yard in her harness for the first time & she pretty much told me to eff off and unalive myself. I have been following your methods and things are better now than before. What a beautiful Geiko…feisty little devil. When I was very around 4, we lived in Hondo, Tx. There were so many horned toads..actually lizards…beautifully patterned guys covered with spines. One day I was sitting on a fence watching a very big one hanging out just below me. Suddenly he grabbed onto my big toe…I think he thought it was a grub. It didn’t hurt but scared me. My Dad tried to get him off, but he hung on for dear life. Had to sit and wait until the fellow decided I wasn’t food after all. I loved those guys so much…there was one that would come out to find me when I came outside. S/he liked head rubs. Little kid fingers can do that…I can testify the spines and sharp. Sadly, they are now endangered. The San Antonio Zoo has a breeding program to reintroduce them to the wild.

We spent our entire childhood looking for things outdoors.. finding. .. snakes, lizards, bugs.. then into dogs and cats, horses, calves, Llamas .... you name it, we found it and Loved them! Such a beautiful lizard! I have heard that they bite quite hard but I didn't know anything about their barks. I found this session interesting ( and a bit funny too ) but it's heartwarming to see an animal gaining trust for a human . I hope Sylvester will live too! I feelt so sorry for him when i first saw him but i know that you guys will do what you can for him, good luck with him and with taming that little bity gecko ( so adorable ❤️)!

Really enjoyed this, more please! I had horses and parrots, it reminds me a lot of natural horsemanship, make every encounter a positive experience for the animal.

To disengage a ferret put hand and ferret briefly under running water...instant release. Wonder if it works with hilarious gecko. ?

Thanks for doing this! Ive mentioned it before because there are no videos on socializing tokays and I knew if anyone could show it it would be kevin. It's great to see these beautiful animals in a calm/ calmer state. Cant wait to see updates on the display enclosures for some of your animals. Im sure the enclosures will be amazing and being able to see your beautiful animals on display will be awesome. Just a question, how do you think certain animals behavior may change or take time to adjust since its a new and different thing? I know they know you guys so that will be comforting to them. This was so interesting to watch, I'd love to see more videos like this where you explain what you're doing, why and where they come from etc. The way you watch and take in their natural behaviour over the years and find ways to "use" it - done so myself (to a degree) with all kinds of animals/reptiles and insects which have helped me a lot in different situations. Thank you so much for this educational video!
