Thank you so much for your extremely well made, easy to understand videos 🙏🏻🙏🏻 so much extremely helpful information brought to the point. Because of you I’m planning on training my dachshund puppy as a truffle dog when he has his basic obendience down. I’ve only had him a few days and he seems to love sniffing, digging and is highly food motivated, so I think this will be great mental stimulation for him later on. I don’t want to settle for the stigma that Dachshunds are untrainable. I’m from a family of dog lovers and have always been around numerous dogs, and while I can attest that a dogs instinct of what they were bred for is very obvious and significant in their behavior and also for their training, their talents can still surprise us. We have had Dobermans, Dalmatians and other breeds deemed highly intelligent, but the most intelligent dog anyone in my family has ever met is my chihuahua jack russel mix, a prior street dog that I only adopted when he was 4. He watches TV and likes to bark at dogs or scenes with a lot of tension (he loves a good thriller 😂🙈), he knows the names of a lot of objects and will bring them if I ask without me ever having intentionally trained him to do that, he remembers where he has hidden toys or where I have put things for weeks, I’ve fallen asleep on a 2 hour train ride to my parents and he woke me up at their station super excited because he loves my mom and he could already tell where we were headed. With him it’s not like I’m giving commands, we almost have conversations because he understands so much of what I’m saying. I don’t think anyone would guess by looking at him 🙈 He is 15 now and a very sassy grandpa, but he will always be my #1. Anyway, thank you again for your lovely videos ☺️🙏🏻👏🏻

Thank you for taking the time to write such positive feedback. This comment really made my day - it's just always fascinating to hear stories of how dogs communicate with us - your smart little fellow sounds like a great character!

Well done video. I agree with what you said as points. I need to point out however that all those points coincide with the human partner. What our age is should be considered when choosing a breed. Does the person have the right patience for the breed. It's a partnership so the human needs to be even more up to the task. Also I believe the environment your going to be hunting in is important to consider. I believe pointers might be a better choice if hunting in more open conditions where as here in Western Washington the forests can be dense. A dog here needs to be able to bust thru brush and not run and range out as far as a pointer can. And weather. I live in a temperante rainforest. Meaning we get a lot of rain. Labs are ideal for this kind of cold wet conditions. But would overheat in places like Southern California. Was hoping you would show some video of the truffle hunting Chihuaha, you didn't let me down 😅. Have a great day. 🌞

Knew you would appreciate the chihuahua and good point about how hunting locations should play a role dog selection!

@TheRealTruffleHunters AND the person. It's a team. If I was a younger man and still had both legs I might consider a different breed of dog( oh hell I'd still get a black lab because I like them so much😁) Springers are wonderful dogs but at my age they have a bit to much energy. You have no idea how many folks I have told to look up the video of that Chihuaha. I'm smiling right now just thinking about it. I was really looking forward to going to the Oregon Truffle Festival but now I don't believe I'll get my new leg in time to be able to drive there. I'm still hoping to try. Definitely will make it next year. Anyway I hope you're late winter Truffle season is great. Have a great day 🌤 👍 😀

Great video was going to ask is there any tips for improving concentration my 1 year collie loves truffles hunting but gets bored quickly if there isnt any to find in a few minutes or will this improve with age? Thanks

This is definitely something that improves with age and experience. In the meantime try to keep your energy levels high as the dog will take cues from you, make the whole exercise as exciting as possible.
