Thank you for the lovely video, it was heartwarming to watch and provided really valuable information :) I have a little question though. Do you reckon this method could be repeated in the levantine area, given its climate?
@TheRealTruffleHunters
@TheRealTruffleHunters 13 дней назад
Tuber aestivum or the black summer truffle can grows in a variety of climates. The key is rainfall, suitable soils and the species of trees, As for the Levant, I don't have a great deal of information but there have been successful cultivation projects in parts of Israel, and I have also heard there are wild truffle hunters in the Lebanon. Some regions of Syria also appear to have the right kind of soil conditions. If you can recreate these conditions then you can certainly grow these truffles. Hi, I have 3 working Lagotto’s. Great dogs, fantastic workers . However Loki, my dog will not work for anyone but me. My wife’s dog Alba works for anyone as long as she gets her piece of cheese or sausage and our last Bella is a bit more complicated and only works if she wants too. I love them as a breed and they live very happily with my 50kg Doberman. I am in France with truffle orchards.

I have found white truffles growing by my friends house the first with three big fat ones the largest being 3 ounces,,, I am a forager and a Chef, I have found when I harvested the last one I had scraped some of the outside of the mushroom in the dirt back into the hole and covered it trying to keep continuity and not destroy the soil. We had a lot of rain and tomorrow truffles are coming up. That’s this year last year we had three harvests doing the same thing I would love to talk please contact me

My truffle dog is excellent at finding training Truffles in my garden and in our plantation. However, we have stumbled across some real Truffles that he does not indicate on. We had this issue last year and it took about two months before he indicated on the real truffle in the wild, it had been mostly eaten away by slugs by the time he indicated on it. Is it possible that he’s just not indicating because they’re not mature and the scent is not there? Once the truffle emerge should I expect a trained truffle dog to find them? Complete novice, obviously. I’m worried, we have inadvertently trained him on the smell of a training truffle, not the real deal
@TheRealTruffleHunters
@TheRealTruffleHunters 22 дня назад
When we are transitioning dogs to find truffles in the wild we usually take them out late in the season when the truffles have a strong aroma. Rotten truffles are the easiest for them to find. With practice your dog will eventually be able to find the less mature, less aromatic early season truffles. It sounds like you are on track and just keep at it

I recently adopted a 3-year-old Rottweiler from a dog shelter. He is very friendly and quickly masters obedience training. What do you think? Does a Rottweiler have a good enough sense of smell to regularly look for truffles? (it is said to be a typical working breed) I became very interested in the topic. I'm from Poland. There is no tradition of collecting truffles here, only a few people do it. It was only a few years ago that information appeared that several species can be found here :) Today I received truffle oil and I'm starting to teach my dog. I'm full of hope :)
@TheRealTruffleHunters
@TheRealTruffleHunters Месяц назад
You must give it a try as all breeds of dog have a good enough sense of smell to find truffles. Whether he is the best dog for the job is a different matter as, generally speaking, the younger you start the better and other breeds are more closely suited to the task of truffle hunting. Having said that, it is always down to the individual dog and you mention that he is a quick learner so I would go for it. As you say, Poland is still very much undiscovered territory as regards truffles and seems to have a great deal of potential - I hope you do well!

@@TheRealTruffleHunters Thank you for your answer. I'm very pleased. My dog is making amazing progress. I'm at the stage of keeping him a truffle ball indoors. In a few days I will try to bury it for him in my parents' garden. This dog has incredible energy and a willingness to learn new things. I feel that he can be a good collaborator :) When it comes to Poland, he may actually have a lot of potential. It is also worth mentioning Ukraine, which has very high-quality black soil.

@@TheRealTruffleHunters This is a dog that learned to roll over on its back in 10 minutes ;) It can now track balls in truffle oil in a meadow at the edge of the forest. I go to training like this with him once a week and he's doing quite well. The only downside is that he often wants to take breaks to do various crazy things, for example swimming in the swamps :D but I hope he will become more involved :) I'm tempted to take him to a potential place where there may be truffles. I am 100 km away from my place of residence. This is one of the largest forest complexes in our country. I will be grateful if you give me some tips on what to consider when looking for potential truffle habitats in such a place. In a Polish book about truffles it is written that the summer truffle appears in our country around mid-June. I wonder if it's still a good time to get them out of the ground. I have no idea how long a ripe truffle can stay in the ground and still be edible.

@TheRealTruffleHunters
@TheRealTruffleHunters Месяц назад
Border collies can make excellent truffle dogs, even though there are other instincts at play, they are obedient and will quickly get back to the task at hand. They would naturally rather be running round or herding, so work on his nose by giving him things to sniff. Hide his treats or favourite toys in boxes and get him to sniff them out. But start easy to build up his confidence and use high value treats ! Check out scent training videos for more ideas

Howdy lady. Very interesting point. I have been considering a similar thought about the dogs but from a different perspective. The physical differences between different breeds. So for example I still intend to get a Black Labb as my first dog, the British type. Strong,, focused and works more closely to their handler. But a year or so later a pointer or similar breed that has the legs and body to run further afield and more easily then the lab. So having dogs that specialize in two different ways. Hope you're having a great season. My legs are getting better and I tomorrow ill be seeing a eye specialist to find out what needs to be done so I can see well enough to drive again. Imagine how difficult it is to not be able to see well enough too drive,or operate a boat or film,edit or upload videos to RU-vid! MADDENING. Have a great day. 🐕🐕‍🦺

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience. I've been looking for video like this for a long time. What is the purpose of using fructose and would it make a big difference if I don't put it in the mix. I'm using my dried aestivum scraps , soak them in water for a few hours, than shake to break them and use the slury to water my saplings. If you have any observations, how long should take if the inoculation is successful for aestivum to create burn pach around the tree. Thank you, and I wish you great summer season 😊
@TheRealTruffleHunters
@TheRealTruffleHunters 2 месяца назад
The fructose is supposed to create an environment similar to if the spores had passed through an animal's digestive system. I don't think it is vital and have not used it with tuber magnatum spores. The burn patch is more common with aestivum and trees we inoculated with this species are at Year 2, so nothing as yet but I will keep you posted on that. Our first inoculation was tuber brumale and so far this is our only experiment to bear fruit and we waited 4-5 years. Imprecise because I am not sure whether we can count Year 1 - at that time we were unaware that we were damaging spores by leaving the pieces of truffle exposed to light. We applied this knowledge in Year 2. Drying, as you are doing, might also be preferable to freezing, some mycologists say that the freezing process damages the spore sac. Hope you also have a fruitful season!!
