Part of training is to balance a horse and help them be equal on their left and right sides. However, horses are rarely equally soft or resistance on their left and right sides, therefore, we should rarely be apply the rein contact equally on the left and right rein. Use more feel on the side with more resistance and less feel on the side that is softer, so that one day the horse may become equal balanced on both sides.
I teach Good Horsemanship around the world helping people to understand the emotional and mental component of how horses operate to achieve both a willing partnership and bond and to maximize the performance potential of a horse.

So true, horses move either diagonally or one foot at a time and this method keeps them straight and balanced.

A true gentleman rider and absolutely correct! I have been riding since 5 years old, a natural rider no lessons, until I was in my 20’s I took professional lessons to jump and my teacher could not understand why I was a beginner until I explained.

It makes sense, steady hands but adjusting contact with the horse accordingly. Thanks.

That was really helpful . As a new rider , I struggle with the reins especially . Glad you mentioned that you can do it with the legs also . Thankyou Ross .

Hi Mr. Jabos, your videos help me a lot. But nowadays I feel that I cannot be a good rider. I have a 4 year- old, he is lazy , and stubborn. He cannot go straight, he is tend to go to the right side all the time. When I ask to fix it he resists. And sometimes we even cannot walk he just stops and kicks. What's your suggestion? Please, I need your help and experiences, thank you Sir!

I don't know your horse, so I can't offer specific advice that I know will work for you. However, as a general principle whenever I come across with a chronic straightness issue (and I know it is not due to a physical problem), I do a lot of bending work such as hindquarter disengagements (with no inside leg), forehand yields, leg yields and shoulder in. I include a lot of change of flexion from one bend to another. But remember the effectiveness of this is totally reliant on that each time you apply the inside rein you get a soft bend with the horse following the feel of the rein with its thoughts. Mechanically making a horse flex one way or the other without a change in thought or with a brace in the feel will do nothing to help. I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I hope that gives you some ideas to play with. Good luck.
