In this video we visit Cannington, a busy station in Perth's south east that serves as the interchange station for the Armadale and Thornlie Lines. The station is the busiest on the line in terms of patronage with 865,018 annual passengers in 2013 - 14 (that's the most recent statistics around, thank you Wikipedia), and has the largest bus interchange on the line with 9 bus stands serving 14 different bus routes (I think anyway because Transperth still hasn't updated the network maps despite the Airport Line being opened for over two months now).
We start on the station platforms where we see two and four-car Transperth A Series EMU's arrive and depart the station, but in a rather unusual sighting we also see a not in service Transperth B Series EMU pass through not in service heading for the nearby turnback sidings (possibly on a test or driver training run?). We then head down to the bus interchange where we see various buses including Mercedes Benz O500LE's and Volvo B7RLE's. In a rather nice sighting we also see a Mercedes Benz O405NH on a driver training run. These buses are the oldest in the fleet and at the time of filming I believe none were in revenue service taking passengers. However as of uploading this video it appears a small number have been reactivated and are taking passengers again. Perhaps the Transperth enthusiasts can fill me in on that one.
Cannington station opened in 1897 and was rebuilt to its current configuration in the early 1990's when the Armadale Line was electrified. The station is soon set to be rebuilt as part of the Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal project, which will see six level crossings on the line between Victoria Park and Beckenham removed and five stations rebuilt above ground. Major construction is set to begin at the end of 2023. Certainly a good thing as Cannington station feels rather cramped considering the number of passengers using it, with small shelters and narrow platforms and walkways.
The other thing bothering me about Cannington station is the poor surrounding land use. Considering how busy this station is, it's the perfect location for a transit oriented development; yet it is surrounded by a large suburban-style government office with a large car park, light industry and vacant land. This may soon change as the City of Canning has prepared the Canning Activity Centre Plan which aims to provide higher density development in the area surrounding the station and along Cecil Avenue towards Westfield Carousel; the largest shopping centre in Perth. I'm not sure as to the status of this plan but it does appear there is some new urban development beginning in the area.
