Shrewsbury was and partially still is one of the most beautiful stations in the UK, and its junction must be the best after the rationalisation of that in Newcastle. Man Victoria nowadays is a far cry from what it once was, half of it turned into a tram station, lots of trackwork gone and the remains of the old station buried in concrete and glass. Although the old station was dark and grimy, its layout and trains were much more interesting, funny detail; the pacers and 150s can still be seen, Northern rail is slowly replacing them now with new stock.
Another superb video; excellent footage which is most useful to modellers of the era. I love the way you have captured and zoomed into details. Thank you for taking time to upload your prescious material for us to enjoy. Well done Roy
Great historical document ! 1987, it's the year i'm modelling. Superb idea you have there, and great shots on the brand-new by then class 150 DMU, priceless ! Thanks a lot !
Brilliant stuff. I was sure i was going to see a young me charging up and down Victoria platform 11 with excitement as the 47 came in. Happy days remembered, thanks so much for posting!
Notice no vegetation/ weeds at Shrewsbury, unlike today. That was my patch, 1985-95. We used weedkiller. The Chopper in p1 was there for Crew training, my dad was doing his refresh on it. 37428 David lloyd George,, in Cripple Sidings, ready for a turn over the Cambrian or Central Wales line. The other loco's probably waiting for Sunday engineering work. Ahh 47479 working the Euston, before the Dvts appeared. Walked those tracks , every Wednesday, weekly maintenance patrol. One day I will see my dad in somebody's video on RU-vid. Massive Thanks for posting this. 🤩👍
@@royharrison4122 I'm only a baby Roy,, wasnt born till 1963 lol. Dad was Footplate by then , started as cleaner then Fireman. Said he really enjoyed 2nd man job, when the Westerns came along . He would come home, tell my mum he had a hard day lol. Bit like me after many Hand signal man jobs for weekend possessions. Protection is out 'Bobby'. Then get my head down for the night. Slept in all Shrewsbury boxes. Lol. Signal men are a great. Take care Roy. All the best, Ian.
Hi,Roy brings back memories of the days when I was on the footplate I did 50yrs on the footplate I stated as a fireman in steam days 4th of April 1961 I finished my time out at longsight as a driver working trains out of Manchester piccadilly all over the place Regards.Phil.
Amazing video Roy, Outstanding! The thing that surprises me the most is an actual human being is doing the platform announcing, not the pre recorded robotic voice we have today. I will look forward to your next video! Regards Kev
Watching this footage, you forget how completely reliant on diesel (outside the south east) much of our railways were, back then. Despite overhead electric wires being present - not a single electric loco or EMU!
Seems funny seeing a Diesel loco at BNS, given that it's on the line from Euston....which was electrified!?! ....still nice to see the Diesel loco, but funny given they had overhead cables there.
The 50 and 47 haulage at New Street are probably services going to and from the South West (Reading/Bristol and points beyond) rather than Euston, which would’ve been hauled by an 86/87 AC loco by this point. The 50 is certainly going to or coming from the Western or Southern Region as that’s where they were based. The routes to Reading via Oxford and Bristol via Cheltenham still aren’t wired now.
British trains are the most wonderful and beautiful than everything else! In my Country (Greece) I'm the 0.1% who love them (everybody likes Geman-marklin, fleischmann, brawa,...).I don't know why!!!
Probably a terminator from London Euston. They would normally arrive at Platform 4 then go empty to Cotton Hill yard where the loco would run round to form it's return working normally from Platform 7
@@robtyman4281 There was one through working from Euston to Chester via Shrewsbury but I think that finished around 1986. In 1987 there was an InterCity around every 2 hours between Euston & Shrewsbury with one continuing on to Aberystwyth behind a 37 from Salop.. great days from what I remember as a kid 👌
@@The1977joey pre Dvt too. 47479 was a regular on the Euston, coming off at Wolves , waiting for a return working. Happy days, my Pway days, 179 gang Shrewsbury.. Notice, NO VEGETATION , like now 2021.
