VIDEO: An hour in the autumn sunshine at Forest Gate station, on the Great Eastern Main Line and the Elizabeth Line, featuring Elizabeth Line class 345s, Greater Anglia class 720s, 745s and 755s and assorted freight trains from Freightliner and GB Railfreight.
----------------------
Historically within the country of Essex, Forest Gate station was first opened in 1840 by the Eastern Counties Railway company but was, initially, short-lived, closing in 1843. As a result of pressure from local residents, the station was re-opened in 1846.
At the time, the service was very poor and infrequent, due to a lack of proper funds but it wasn't until 1862 that it was amalgamated with several other railways into the Great Eastern Railway. Throughout the remainder of the 19th century, the station would see significant expansion to cope with the area's growing population, such as longer platforms and, eventually, quadrupling the tracks between Maryland and west of Romford. In 1894, they built a goods yard near the station, as a means of competing with an upcoming railway; the Tottenham & Forest Gate Railway, which still remains open today as part of the Gospel Oak to Barking Line (now the Suffragette Line on the London Overground).
Electric trains began operation between Liverpool Street and Shenfield in 1949, initially at 1500V DC but, later, upgraded to AC power in 1960, in order to match the current being used for the main electrification of the Great Eastern Main Line ordered by British Rail's 1955 Modernisation Plan.
Since 2015, the station has been operated and managed by TfL Rail (now the Elizabeth Line) and has facilitated numerous upgrades to the station such as lifts providing step free access to all platforms, improved lighting, signage and ticketing facilities.
The current off-peak service pattern (as of June 2024) is:
- 8 tph to London Paddington (2 tph continue to Heathrow T5).
- 8 tph to Shenfield.
There are additional services that run to/from London Liverpool Street and Gidea Park during peak hours.
On Sundays, the service pattern (as of June 2024) is:
- 4 tph to Gidea Park.
- 4 tph to Shenfield.
- 8 tph to London Paddington (2tph continue to Heathrow T5).
