On November 24th, 2023, I returned to the Cleveland Cliffs Indiana Harbor steel mill in East Chicago, Indiana to get another glimpse at one of Chicago's grittiest railroad operations. No matter the time of day, there's always something happening around the mill, and I caught a few different movements near the Indiana Harbor Canal at CP 503. A nice surprise was the appearance of a former Norfolk Southern SW1500, which had been acquired by Cleveland Cliffs since my last visit. It was great seeing the usual stuff as well; the orange and grey switchers, and the glowing bottle trains that are a staple of steel mill railroading!

I enjoyed watching this drone video footage of train action at the Cleveland Cliffs Steel Plant in East Chicago, Indiana, Sam! The overhead view of the glowing bottle molten steel cars was fascinating to see. Thank you for uploading this video for us to see!

anyone here successfully railfan the old pedestrian bridge? Ever since Cliffs put those damn trespassing signs by it, I haven't tried it. Really miss chilling up there.

Woah cool you can actually see the molten steel in the train cars. Wow good job with the footage.

With the opening shot you can see clearly just how many tracks were parallel through there and how much rail infrastructure is gone. It’s mind boggling to contemplate. I’d venture that there were two key events in the building of scrap metal millionaires: the scrapping of WWll ships and the dismantling of the railroads from their peak mileage.

Judging by the derelict bridges and empty open areas there must have been a LOT more rail tracks and traffic here in the past?

Back in the 1960's through the late 1980's that area was loaded with trackage and buildings now gone. Although I didn't see it in this video, there was a high line closer to Dickey Road than the one shown cutoff in the video. The Dickey Road High Line was sensory experience that you felt in your bones even while riding in your car. Two Inland Steel SW's and IIRC a slug would tie on to a loaded coke train and make a run for the grade. The grade was built on the ground but would change to a wooden pile trestle with a 90 degree curve just before getting to canal side. There would be shaking and pounding that would make Mt. Etna proud!
