In this video we visit the Midland Highway/Nunn Street level crossing in Benalla along Victoria’s North East Line. The level crossing was notable for being the last on a Victorian mainline to feature an old McKenzie and Holland Teardrop Bell on the south side of the level crossing. Unfortunately the old bell died in late 2023 and as of May 2024 it has been replaced by a new Siemens Type 3 E-Bell.
Thankfully the Westinghouse Hybrid Bell on the north side is still alive and sounds fairly healthy. In this video we film some trains on the north side with the Hybrid Bell, although the new Siemens E-Bell can be heard in the background.
Here we see some V/Line Vlocity DMU’s on Albury services, but we also see Seymour Railway Heritage Centre’s ‘Spirit of Yarrawonga’ tour which was visiting Benalla for a daytrip from Yarrawonga with C501 and V/Line’s N451. We see the train activate the crossing a couple of times, including backing out of the platform with the VR parlor car leading; a novel experience which I compare to filming an American-style push-pull train, except the parlor car doesn’t have lights or a horn.
