A decent enough afternoons session spent at Winchester station on the South Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from South Western Railway, Cross Country and freight from Colas Rail.
The station was opened by the London and Southampton Railway in 1839 and was for a lengthy time a terminus station for the Winchester and Southampton section of the mainline. The following year the line was extended to Basingstoke and at the time it was the most complicated section of the line to complete with 4 different tunnels needed for the line to reach the two towns.
When you consider the importance of the town you would've thought that the station would have much more work done to it over the years but in all honesty its hardly been touched all that much, it wasn't until 2009 that the station received ticket barriers and CCTV which to me just sounds astonishing especially when over the past 5 years the station has been handling on average 5 million people!!
Overall I'm not impressed with this station and I very much doubt I will be coming back here.
My next station is Micheldever.
