The old Commonwealth Railways township of Rawlinna has been just a dot on the map for many years however this town was once, one of Western Australia's more critical for the transport of goods and passengers in and out of the state. Rawlinna which in the indigenous language means "wind" first came to be over 100 years ago when the "Trans Australian Railway" was built between 1913 & 1917.
Some of the history of Rawlinna is still alive as seen in our video! The railway is also going strong with over 50 train movements a week passing through the forgotten and almost abandoned township.
Filming was undertaken in July 2021.

I recall seeing tourist travel where the IP stopped at Rawlinna for evening Sunset three course meals and maybe before east bound trains.

Cook and Rawlinna used to be the 2 main camps on the Transline. Haig, Reid were minor camps I lived in Rawlinna when I was a kid, talk about solitude, we made the occasional trip to Kal on an old "Rattler" carriage from the 1920's shunted onto the back of a goods train for fettlers families and the like, I remember as a kid boarding the train late at night and arriving at Parkeston about 7:30AM in the morning then taking a cab into Kal. I still remember the old maroon and silver Commonwealth Railways GM 2 stroke locomotives after which transitioned to the Green and Yellow ANR ones.

Hi Sam!! You are the star here not the others in the comments section, I lived and worked at Rawlinna mate , yeah it was owned and run by Commonwealth Railways and AN before the liberal party sold it off to greedy mongrel cowboy operators

Looking at all those containers often double stacked taking an almost uncountable number of trucks off the line. I can’t imagine why the Melbourne to Brisbane rail line won’t be a similar success.

Right in the middle of nowhere too. Such an important thing at the time, and now townships like this are almost forgotten, yet were so important to Western Australia. Thanks for watching. Hope to make more videos like this one soon! Matt - M&S Trains

What was the average train count through Rawlinna per day in 2021, considering the 40+ PN trains and 10-12 SCT trains a week?
@MS_Trains
@MS_Trains Месяц назад
Average would be 7-8 trains a day, mostly all time day runner.

@@MS_Trains One definitely must be patient to railfan this line, and I can tell you had to wait many hours for trains to appear. But as mentioned, this area has some artifacts and old buildings to admire in the meantime. Not that anyone would come here at night, but a train or two must pass through here at night, right?

Fantastic video. How long did you stay in Rawlinna to shoot all the footage? Also 4PM6 looks like it had 2 passenger cars after the 2 locos. Would they be used to transfer crew?
@MS_Trains
@MS_Trains 2 года назад
Thanks mate! From memory I think we stayed for about 3 days in total. Only went to avoid having to Quarantine when we arrived home in SA as at the time we were on are way home before the borders closed. The passenger cars are for crews as you said to run relay on rotating shifts. As for why there's two I'm not actually sure. There's a few reasons but I'm not one to speculate. Matt - M&S Trains

@@MS_Trains I heard Australia has become a prison state. How bad are things really over there? I imagine folks in the rural areas haven’t completely lost there humanity... much like here in the states

I have been to Rawlinna twice in last three years on the Indian Pacific, slap up sunrise breakfast was awesome. Had a quick tour around from one of the farm staff on the back of a motorbike, like Cook, a shadow of its former self. Great video, enjoyed it.

Being from America, does Austrailia manufacture most of it's stuff or like the US, get it from China?
@MS_Trains

In regards to what? If you're talking rail infrastructure, rail and sleepers are Australian Made. Locomotives, for the most part at the moment, are Australian Made, excluding CSRs & QBXs from China. Most of our new flat wagons come from China aswell. Matt - M&S Trains

@@MS_Trains I was talking more about common stuff like appliances, tv's, food, car parts. By the way, we Americans were lucky enough to get a Holden built hotrod (GTO) but unfortunately, the Pontiac brand has ceased (in America).

Thanks mate! Rawlinna has a sheep station south of the town and people definitely live there to run that. Other than that not 100% sure. There was a caravan there the whole time we were there, parked behind the station. Not sure if we're just staying a while or do live there. Most nights ARTC workers stay at the township to rest up before other days work out on this remote line. Matt - M&S Trains

From what I've been told there is a caretaker family living in Rawlinna. The house they Occupy is the same one we moved out of in 1989. Spent 6 years living here. The building with all the trestle tables out the front was a telecommunications building and the right end was the old post office/bank. The station is actually the building to the right of this one. Was great to see a different perspective. Sad that it is another part of the countries history crumbling.

Hi Lots of info - Did not know so many daily services were run on this line. Over 40 services a week = roughly 6 a day. Can I suggest for the International visitors PM designation etc not does reveal much and how far the distances are -Perth -Melbourne etc. Only found out the other day that overseas inwards container rail traffic from Perth to the eastern States could increase when Fremantle Port is moved to Kwinana sometime in the future. The current WA State Govt is heavily committed to it, but it is a bit controversial. Keep up the good work .
@MS_Trains
@MS_Trains 2 года назад
Thanks mate! That's just 40+ services that are Pacific National! They also get about 10-14 SCT Logistics services a week too. As far as "PM" for example "4PM6" that's the train number given to the train by ARTC. I don't choose it and how much info it gives to the viewer. It's also hard to jam-pack these videos with so much information but will try to include more in the future for you, thanks. The WA Govt is doing good things for rail and it makes sense for them to do it as we have this railway line which has the capacity to take more trains! It's also worth noting some inwards freight does also come in via the Port of Melbourne and get railed to Perth that way. Matt - M&S Trains

@@MS_Trains During COVID, Sydney and Melbourne port congestion has become bad, so companies like Myer have said they've been shipping fashion goods containers to Singapore and then railing the containers to (presumably) either Melbourne (most likely) or Sydney.
